I find it interesting that it is listed as MULTI WORKOUT and not Multi SPORT. Makes me think the OP (Robot) had things in mind like:

- 2 workouts of the same type
- strength training could count
- etc.

Just a thought.

I am sure it will, once again, come down to what is easiest to track and what will include the most people in the challenge.

Ktriathlete - 2009-03-25 2:51 PM Going back to what Milton is saying, I think we're going to have to do some defining of what counts as a workout. Only Swim, Bike, Run?, minimum time?, etc. Do the workouts have to be in two different disciplines Workout #1 Swim, #2 Bike, or can they be two workouts of the same type (2 runs, swims, etc?)

We could adopt similar rules to the 100/100 running challenge that was on ST.

Workout must be of a certain length. Workouts of the same type in the same day must be separated by at least an hour. (Can't run 30 mins, stop for water for 5 mins and run another 30 for two workouts)

Anything else must be a minimum time, I would say 30 mins for the first workout, 20 mins for the second. There's a few plans that people follow that say 1 hour bike, 20 min recovery run or similar.

I suppose that could also include things like core strength workouts?

Could be interesting, for example I assigned Trent a set of in and outs (swim a 50, get out and do various exercises), if the accumulated time for the exercises was over 20 mins, could that count as well? :D

I cast the lonely vote for the run challenge. But I'd propose to do it by time rather than miles, i.e. less danger of pushing too hard and getting injured.

No desire to swim here until the water is warm enough to swim outside (pool or OWS).

There's a few of us that have been swimming at an outdoor pool since Feb.

John

UMM - she is from FLAGSTAFF. Arizona is bigger than just Phoenix ya know.

uhm, I used to swim in a competition temp pool outdoors at Western State College, 7700 feet, and yes, in the middle of winter. You just have to bring readily available layers. :D

John

Instead of playing the "I'm more Hardcore than you" all the time (we were all there at ESHR!) you may, for once, have to realize that she may not have the same amenities available to her. OR her goals may just be different.

Good for you, thats cool that you swam in the winter. But she may not have an outdoor pool of a safe temp to swim in, or may not be training for something at this point that requires her to do so.

LOL. I am the one out in Lake Mary at the end of October, looking like a seal with full wetsuit, neoprene cap, gloves, booties, etc. But until a couple of weeks ago there was ice on it...

If we had an outdoor pool that is open in winter I'd use it!

I was thinking that the "Multi-Workout"  could include weights or the like in addition to the S/B/R.

I also feel it is acceptable if a person wanted to do two workouts of the same discipline in the same day. A 20 mile bike to and from work should count as two workouts.

uhm, I used to swim in a competition temp pool outdoors at Western State College, 7700 feet, and yes, in the middle of winter. You just have to bring readily available layers. :D

If I've looked that up correctly, a "competition temp pool" such as the one you're talking about is 78 degrees.  Astrid (up in Flagstaff) could only dream of such a thing, as the outside pool she has access to isn't heated.

That's about right, 75-78 degrees was the norm. And yes, not having a heated pool would suck. A lot.

Yes.....it is clear John is NOT hard core. If he were he would not cry like a little girl.

AND....if I read correctly, you were suggesting that the workouts could not be separated.  This is a 2 a day workout challenge, not a BRICK challenge.  Having to do the workouts back to back would be a brick challenge.  I think for many of us bricks are luxuries usually reserved for weekends, and if we can get a 2 a day in during the week, it often times has to be 1 before work, 1 and lunch, and/or one at night.

BUT Robot started the challenge, so I think he should have the final say on what the rules are.

I think any two workouts would count, not just brick workouts. So running with strength later in the day would count for example. And there would be some minimum amount of time, like 10minutes or something so warmups for lifting don't count as a multi-workout day.

No, I'm not saying workouts can't be separated. Of course they can. My suggestion was for the time limits more than anything, because some coaches/plans CALL for a brick, with the second workout being less than 30 minutes.

The other suggestion was for a mandatory separation of like workouts (such as run/run), so that a rest period in the middle of a long run couldn't be counted to split it into two runs.

So it would be something like

30 minutes minimum time if separated by more than an hour.

like workouts (run/run) MUST be separated by at least an hour

Brick style workouts must be minimum 20 minutes for second workout.

But yes, Robot made the call, it's his determination.

I think it should also be frequency based. The idea is to help everyone out, and the distance based things are just too advantageous for the fast people.

I really liked the SlowTwitch 100 runs in 100 days challenge.

Do workouts, make sure they have to be at least 30 minutes long. Workouts of the same kind
must be separated by 1 hour. Long workouts are long workouts, can't be broken up.

Go from there.

I won't be doing this challenge. I get too focused on chasing the spreadsheet as opposed to doing the training I should b doing according to my plans.

Allright so here's the deal. I like to make this easy on myself to keep track of and of course have the knowledge that you are responsible for the effectiveness of your own training. Here is how the multi-workout challenge will be scored:

If you have more than one blue circle on your graph (ya know the graphics that depict S/B/R and strength) and the duration of each of them is at least 10 minutes then you get a point for the day, whoever has the most points at the end of the challenge wins.

I like the idea of a frequency-based challenge: something S/B/R/ST/Yoga or a combo every day, minimum 30 minutes. I was as close to getting on the trainer this morning as John's manhood shrinks in cold water--but couldn't get motivated enough. A challenge would have brought out my competitive side and made me ride.
