Great.  One more piece of gear to update. I've just upgraded a bunch of SCUBA gear, and now this.

It looks like they made the 305 in a water-resistant version.  Now if BT can just manage to upload multisport workouts, my life will be complete.

Someone said they were on the garmin store but I can't find them.

$369 for the 405XT, $349 for the 310XT.

Man, I want that 310xt bad.  I don't care if it is ugly as sin or not.

Ah ha, there they are. I don't see them in the store yet but thanks for posting.

I'm happy with my 305 for now. I wonder, do they intend for the GPS to WORK while swimming or just be wearable during the swim?

from what a garmin rep told me back in january, the gps is not for use during the swim, just making the transition from swim to bike easier by not having to put your gps watch on.

Why don't they waterproof the 405? Grrr... The 305 is like a TV strapped to my wrist. I would like a Garmin, but I'd buy the 405 since it's much smaller.

For out-of-water activities, Forerunner 310XT tracks speed, distance and location accurately and effortlessly, and users benefit from the precision of heart rate-based calorie computation.

Seems like they are hinting here in their press release that it doesn't track this stuff in the water...

From their blog it says HR won't transmit in the water (didn't mention GPS I don't think). They mentioned that it would cut seconds off transition not having to put it on :P.

It's also ANT+ compatible, so it can read ANT+ power meters.

The 305 isn't all that bad. The 405 really doesn't have enough features IMO to work well for a triathlete.

You underestimate my tiny wrists - I can reach my thumb and pinky finger around one and they will touch. I wear a size 4.5-5 ring. The 305 is ginormous on me.

What do you dislike about the 405? Just curious, as it's still new. And I don't plan on buying one soon...but in the future.

I'm 5'2" and petite with tiny wrists and I have the 305.  You don't even notice it.  No problem getting used to it at all.  I would suggest the quick release velcro strap on it as opposed to the plastic one with holes that it comes with.

What's another $400 to the sport of love!!!!  That is a make or break on whether or no it works GPS wise in the water....

However, what I don't get is that it is a waterproof watch?  How can it work, and not work based just on the environment you are in?  If you are swimming in an open lake, and the watch is waterproof how would GPS NOT WORK?

No position data in the water which means no pace data and no HR function either.   So, what's the point in wearing it in the water at all?  I like the smaller size and the longer battery life, but there doesn't seem to be any more functionality than the 305 for usage at a triathlon.  In fact, I would prefer to continue to use the velcro wrist strap and bike mount as I have been doing with the 305.  I can see the 305 easier while on the bike in aero position and snapping it out of the bike and onto my wrist takes about 5 seconds.  Since I am a MOP guy, I can stand the 5 seconds without too much heartache.

I have pretty small wrists too. I REALLY notice the 305, even with the velcro strap. I feel like Wurkit said, like it's a TV strapped to my wrist. I even got a spot rubbed raw once, I think because of the squared-off corners.
Got the 405 and it fits so much better on my wrist.

Everyone's different!

I'm also curious as to the other poster who said the 405 doesn't have some features the 305 does... which ones?

I wonder if there is a way to change the current 305's battery (e.g. 8-10 hours) out for the new 20 hour battery?

Really? I have the same sized wrists, and once I got used to it, it hasn't been that bad.... have you had it a long time?

If this was directed to me...?
My boyfriend has the 305 and I used it before I got my 405. Used it maybe 20 or 30 times? I guess maybe I should say that I MUCH PREFER the size of the 405. The 305 is not impossible to get used to, I could do it if it was my only opion, but since I had the choice I went with the one that was more comfy to me.

Well I guess the 405 isn't that bad, but no routing functions (not a big deal), but no multisport kind of sucks for racing.

I enjoy the bigger screen and up to 4 data fields on the 305 that I don't think you get on the 405. Also, can you get the quick release kit for the 405?

I'm a triathlete. I have a 405 and love it. What extra features would you want in it (vs 305) that makes it not worth it? I'm curious what I mean missing in the 405 that the 305 has that makes it better for a triathlete? For my part, a waterproof 405 would be great. Other than that, I run and bike with my 305 (and do bricks) and find it really simple to use. I've heard complaints that switching functions from bike to run is hard on the 405 but it really isn't. All you have to do is hit stop and clear and start it up again and you will have a new workout logged. After the fact you will know which one was the bike and which was the run. Not an issue for me.

X2. Obviously the technical aspect of GPS in the water is a tough one, not sure anyone will be able to solve it and keep accuracy reasonable.

I think the battery life and form factor (though I don't mind my 305 size myself) is probably the bigger news. The 305 is submersible per the IPX7 standard so I don't worry about using it in the rain or anything.

Yeah I guess if you want someting for racing the multisport "one-button" push would make a difference. I use it solely for a training tool, and can switch from "run" to "bike" mode as needed.

The 405 has 3 data fields on the screen, but you can "tap" through the other ba-zillion data fields as needed.

I think being able to wear the watch for an entire race has it's merits, even if speed/distance is only recorded on the last 2 legs.  It is nice to know where you stand time-wise without having to switch out watches, etc...  It is still sorta big to use over a regular watch for swim timing though... so I don't think I would use it in my regular swim workouts.
