Nair sucks.  If you have somewhat sensitive skin, DON'T use it.  Burns and erupted like a volcano, and took me a few weeks to get better afterward.

I did a combination of home-waxing kit and epilating.  Works fine.

I tried it once, and lost all my fingernails. Plus, I still had stubble the next day. Not a fan.

After reading the OP and then you saying you used on the bikini area I actually got weak in the knees with potential pain and mishaps. This is of course comijg from someone who dropped a pair of scissors point first into his berries but thats another story.

After trying waxing one time I really doubt you could get that device anywhere near me. I do however see a laser in my future once I find  a reputable place to go. And no Im not getting my legs lasered.

You can't leave us hanging (like some berries)... sounds like a new thread... where truth is stranger than fiction!  come on, spill the beans (or the berries) and share... cheap entertainmemnt is hard to come by!

LOL once I get home later and can sit down and take the time ill tell the story of twigs and berries and scissors

American Laser Centers are all over the place.  They have a two year guarantee on their work...which means after your six treatments if any hair grows back after that they will remove it for free.  So, pretty much it's unlimited laser treatments for more than 2 years.  Wait for a sale though.  I ended up getting about 40% off their retail (which shows how much they mark it up!!!).  Armpits and extended brazilian = $3k.  And you could finance it 0% APR for 12 months.

Basically I did the math...$3k is about 3 YEARS of waxing if I wax those two areas once a month.  That's a deal if you ask me.

And I didn't think the lasing hurt anywhere near what waxing hurts.

csibona - 2009-04-02 4:07 PM Ouch. I'm not sure but I would imagine that the hair roots are different between men and women (on their legs) so this difference may contribute to why epilation is perceived to be more painful for men than women. Of course, it could be that men are wimps. And I'm certainly including me in the wimpy category.

I don't think the hair is different...I think the AMOUNT of hair is different.  More hair = more pain.

OP - did you mean bathroom appliance?  Or do you have bedroom appliances that also make buzzing noises you'd like to tell us about?

I use Nair, but I've only really tried it when the hair on my legs is long.  It works great for that!  I rub it on, wait about 8-9 minutes (they recommend NOT going over 10 minutes, but my skin isn't sensitive) then I take a warm wet hand towel and the hair literally rubs right off.  I am going to try it and see how it does with stubble, hope it works as well as when the hair is longish.

I'm going to echo the others who said this stuff is not good, especially if you have sensitive skin. I tried it on a small area first like they suggest and will be eternally grateful I didn't go all out. The area turned into a painful red welt essentially. And it took about a week for it to go away. AND there was still hair there.

Sorry for the necropost, but I have to chime in on this one.

During my junior year in college, I roomed with a guy who was on the swim team.  Quite often he would hog the shower to shave his body and I'd yell at him through the shower curtain at 6am to make it quick.

One night, after a meet, the team was celebrating a win at the regionals and I joined in.  After a beer or twenty, the conversation turned to the benefits and drawbacks of depiliatory creams vs. shaving vs. waxing.  In my inebriated state and being the hairiest guy there, I agreed to be a guinea pig for a Hair Removal Extravaganza.  We sectioned off various parts of my body and shaved, waxed and applied nair to various parts.

I wasn't particularly fond of waxing, which seemed a bit too painful for the result.  Shaving was the most comfortable and I didn't suffer much ingrown folicles.  Nair, on the other hand, was fine at first and then pure hell from the next day on.  The Nair was applied to the left side of my chest.

That side of my chest, for the next few days, was similar to road rash.  It was red and irritated and I had a hard time sleeping.  The following week was akin to wearing a hairshirt if I understand it correctly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilice.  Also, there was a rash on my upper abdomen for another week.

Do they even sell Nair anymore?

They do still sell Nair and there is actually a line of products called Nair for Men. Website is Nairformen.com. Main site is naircare.com.
The products have been re-formulated since you tried them, but it's always good to do a patch test before putting it all over your body in case your skin reacts to it. It is a good alternative to the painful Epilator.

Disclaimer: I work for the company that creates the packaging and interactive advertising for Nair.

A girl friend of mine used it on her legs, when we were in junior high, so like mid-90s ('94-'95). It made her pores bleed. I won't touch the stuff.

I've used the nair and the nair for men within the past couple years and would prefer battery acid.

I tried Nair when I was in junior high (like '94 or so) and I got the most hideous bleeding oozing sore all over my legs.  It was so painful I couldn't even wear my jeans, and it was too hideous to wear shorts, so I ended up borrowing those long hippie skirts from my mom for 2 weeks.  Plus there were random disgustingly dark hairs poking out of my festering leg patches.  I swear it made my leg hairs both darker and thicker than they were before.

Then, one time when I was in college (maybe like '03 or '04), I decided to patch-test my roommate's Nair to see if the same thing would happen again.  It did.

lodewey - 2009-04-02 2:40 PM Pics or it didn't happen. Seriously... I've got to see pics of the results. I wonder if I could convince my hubby this would be a good idea for him... Unfortunately, he's got 70 lbs on me so I can't just pin him down and go to work.

Is this something you would actually consider doing?  You know, if you knew you could...

There is no difference in the hair.

Actually, men tend to have a much higher proportion of terminal hair to vellus hair, thus there may be an argument to men experiencing more pain, particularly on the torso.

I'm glad this came up.  I tried Nair after watching the shaving shoot-out, since it seemed like the perfect option overall.  I did buy the sensitive formula since I rememberd suffering from it ~20 years ago after trying my mom's.  While I managed to get away with only a mild burn, the hair removal was NOT worth it.  Didn't get close and didn't last as long as I hoped.  Oh well.

Awesome story! Thanks!

I use Nair on occasion - I've never had trouble with it - but it does stink something awful.  This being said - I'm blonde and the only time I shave is when I race.

I also take care of some "manscaping" for one of my friends with Nair.  He says it burns - but he doesn't get any irritation afterward.

Wow.  Threads like this make me glad I'm almost hairless.  I still can't grow a mustache at 40 years old, but I'll take the trade off any day.
