You have to learn the art of the snot rocket.  I get a runny nose both biking and running so I learned early on how to perfect the technique.

Perhaps this?

http://cme.medscape.com/viewarticle/524083

And the treatment:

"This can be treated using a prescription nose spray call Atrovent nasal (generic name: ipratropium), available in 0.03% or 0.06%. The only symptom this medication controls is runny nose."

I did a lookup on Google of exercise-induced rhinitis and noticed the exact link I was going to post was already posted so, um yeah what he said.  But seriously this is pretty common and I have it bad in just my right nostril.  When the temperature is below 60 degrees you better no ride or run behind me becuase the rockets are a flying   In fact on long bike rides in the winter it can require a rocket evey other minute.  Needless to say I am past the gross part, though I do check to make sure I'm not going to gross anyone else around me out.

I just learned to snot rocket last week and it was awesome! If you're in a group, just check where people are behind ya!  Somehow I rocketed all throughout the 2 1/2 hr ride -my nose never cleared out.

Snot rockets all the way. I like to think of it as a study in aerodynamics. Mine get caught in the air flow over my shoulder.

I am a road racer. Not a good place to snot rocket when you are in a pack. Then I shoot them into my shoulder. What the heck - I'll be washing the jersey when I'm done any way

This stuff helps (pharmacutical grade Vit C). Just mix a spoonful in cold water and shoot it. It will help dry up your sinuses.

Snot rocket.  I learned this one this year.  I was SO proud the first time I did it successfully - but I forgot that the BF isn't a triathlete - and he didn't think it was NEARLY as cool as I did! *giggling*

I am an expert spitter now though.  I've perfected it over the past 2 years - I can actually hit stuff now. *giggling*

Only on BT would we be proud of the way we dispose of bodily fluids....

Ok...I had an absolutely MISERABLE 60-mile ride today...all due to my non-stop runny nose!!! Most rides I can tolerate the annoyance of it, but today it was unrelenting and just made me miserable the entire time. I couldn't wait for the ride to be over...and when I feel like that, I lose all motivation and desire to ride. To make matters worse...the runny nose was preventing me from dropping my head down to be more in line with my spine...thus causing a significant amount of neck strain/pain. If I dropped my head for even a split second, it was like somebody turned on a faucet...the stuff was literally pouring out of my nose!! Ewwwwww, gross...I know!

So here is my question to you all - is there anyone out there that has used the Atrovent nasal spray before their rides, and had success with it controlling their runny nose??? I'm so desperate to find a permanent solution to this problem...that I am willing to go to my doctor and beg him to prescribe this nasal spray for me...but I'd like to know if anyone has had any real world experience with it first. Thanks!!!

Linda

You just have to learn a proper snot rocket. Who cares if it gets on you, look at all the other stuff that gets on you during training. I do both nostrils at once in one quick blow and it works beautifully. You pinch at the bridge of your nose, right where your glasses sit and blow. Just don't overturn or lean, you don't want to crash. The wind and momentum usually blow it well out of the way. But be careful when riding with someone, I hit my ride partner in the shin last week. Luckily he has a good sense of humor.

Nope, just can't do it. Besides, the "gross" factor...I would have to do it like every minute...that is how BAD my nose runs...it doesn't stop for the entire time that I'm moving. The snot rocket thing would end up being much more of a distraction for me...having the need to do it so darn often throughout my rides. I'm looking for a more permanent and preventative solution...like taking a hit of that Atrovent spray before heading out on my rides. I've never used Claritin...wondering if it would accomplish the same thing? Anyone else try Claritin for this problem?
