Flag is a great town and the down town in full of fun artsy shops and bars. There is a terrificic urban trail system that joins up w/the az trail and enough bars to keep most drunks happy. I have done this race (Sprint) three years now and after the pain of Deuces wild Xterra it is a terrific jaunt in a woodsy cool world. I seem to only do these things at elevation (the curse of 100 degree summers) and didn't particularly notice myself sucking wind after the swim. (The swim is a whole different matter, and I train in the pool with less breaths than I do at elevation - every other instead of every stroke) I think it helps - or it may be a placebo effect - either way I'm sticking with it. Enjoy.
The dawn on Lake Mary alone is worth the trip.

Just finished Dueces Olympic. I am prob still hypoxic but was thinking about the Mtn Man Olympic and was wondering how they compare. Is there much elevation change btwn Show Low and Lake Mary? Are the bike and run as hilly as Dueces or more? Appreciate any insight, Otherwise next event is Sept

cordova61 - 2009-05-21 2:54 PM The Flagstaffonians all thank you Robot!

They don't like visitors?

Of course we like visitors, especially when they are gasping for air! *insert evil laugh here* Wink

I'm signed up for the Mountain Man sprint too, this will be my first tri! I'm hoping the altitude is going to give me a slight edge against my more experienced competition... it really bothers some people and others not so much, most people do say it's a little harder to breath.

I just swam in Lake Mary for the first time this morning, it's pretty cold now but I think it's suppose to be about 71 degrees around race time, should be much better.

Hope to see you all there!

FYI the map is a bit off, at least according to last year. The course goes the other way/counter clockwise around the lake. Maybe it is different this year.

I just looked again, and I think you're correct, Mr. Bot. Thanks!

Joe...I have done both.  The "high elevation lack of oxygen" feeling is the same for both.  I would say Show Low's lake temp was a tad cooler than Lake Mary, but Lake Mary is still pretty cold even in July.  I would say the MtnMan bike is a bit harder, has more hills, but super nice pavement.  And I really don't remember huge hills on the Deuces run, but this is what the Mtn Man run is like: Run pretty flat for 1.5 miles. Then you have to climb up an insane 3 switchback road up the side of a mountain. Once at the top, you have about a mile out and back on flat ground again, before you get to fly back down the switchback as fast as your pour knees will allow, then back to transition.  I would say Mtn Man is a little harder than Deuces, but not a HUGE jump that you couldn't do it.  If you did Deuces Oly then your next step could be Mtn Man Oly for sure.

Oh crap, I thought it was 6 weeks.  :S

Can anyone comment on the wind on the bike course? Last weekend it was beyond windy. I've never ridden in crosswinds like that, and I'm wondering if that's normal on that course.

Does this look like the run route? I thought I followed the map on the website, but it's coming out 1 mile long.

Looks about right, just a bit too far on the dirt road at the 3 mile mark.
