Hey everyone...I'm thinking about doing the Mountain Man Sprint Tri but I am a little worried about the altitude...I did a duathlon in Prescott and it didn't seem to affect me too bad, but the elevation is a lot higher in Flagstaff....

For those that have done the race before what are your experiences at the race and if you came up from the valley did the altitude affect you....how did you prepare for the altitude or deal with it during the race...

I figure I'll be ok for the sprint tri...just might be breathing harder...

I've done this race 5 times.  The best advice I can give you is to take it VERY slow when you start off on the swim, or you will find yourself treading water, gasping for any air you can get.  Just start off MUCH slower than you first feel you should, and after about 100 m, as you're working up to a good pace, you'll get to enjoy passing all the people who didn't take this advice.  :-

The water is a bit chilly, so a wetsuit might be a good idea, but isn't necessary.

The run and bike are fast if you're doing the sprint, because you get to turn around at the base of the hills.

It's a beautiful race.  You'll have a great time!!

I haven't done the race before but one of the best things you can do to acclimate to the altitude is get there night before (or even earlier than that) and spend the night. Don't drive up from Phoenix the day of the race and get ready and go and expect to feel very good.

Thanks for the swim advice! I plan on doing that...I'll be in prescott the night before the race (my parents own a cabin there) and than I will drive up to Flagstaff for the race (save money) so I guess i'll be like half adjusted to the altitude...

Don't worry. You're not going to miss out on anything by staying in Prescott.  I've stayed as long as 4 days before the race and it doesn't make a difference.  I spend my summers up there and it takes longer than a week to get breathing perfect.

There are a million different ideas about getting around the altitude hurdle. Some people say to show up the day OF the race and the altitude won't take effect  Some say a day or two before will help, while others will try to convince you to twirl around on your head while juggling daisies.

It takes time to get acclimated to the altitude, and you won't have that, so just take it VERY slow when you start, and you'll thank me later

Good luck!!!

I'm doing the daisying juggling, twirling thing. That's how the Kona boys do it.

When I did the HIM in Show Low, I didn't notice the altitude till the run when my HR was horribly high and my pace was 3-4 mpm slower than my planned pace.  I was up there 2 days early and I heard that 4-5 days is the min to start adjusting, otherwise, getting to altitude w/in 24 hours is the next best.  Odd that it didn't bother me on the swim or bike.  It was my first (and so far only) HIM so it may have been partly just hitting "the wall" too.

I had fun watching the Cool Kids racing up there last year. I may try to make it up there again this year, but not likely to race. Just not enough training under my belt these days.

I remember only feeling it twice - - the first 200 meters or so on the swim and then on the big climb on the run.

Get up there on Friday (or earlier) and drink a lot of fluids.

Nu uh.  I don't know who's log you're looking at, but although he's taken more pictures than I have, his workouts are a little behind

I could swear I made a reply to this one earlier.

I might head up there on Friday with the family, is there anything to do in flagstaff during the summer? I don't imagine there would be much snow?

No it is a horrible place that I would not recommend visiting.... ever.

There I think I have done my civic duty for the flagstaff residents.
