Before signing up/starting to train for IMCDA 09, I had DNF'd in my first marathon - and it was ALL because of a mental shutdown... so you can imagine I was pretty nervous about trying that distance AFTER all the swimming and running in Coeur d'Alene!!
However, I put in the long runs and though the excitement of finally getting to race week was a boost, I still was pretty nervous. I decided to give myself ONE DAY (Friday before the Sunday race) to be nervous and worry about finishing or not... but that was the only time I let myself freak out. Saturday was all about being positive and visualizing the finish chute and line in my head and just getting stoked about my first Ironman. I shut out the negative thoughts and you know what? it worked!
Granted, my IM marathon wasn't exactly fast (at all), but blocking out those nagging little DNF monsters in my head was key. Of course, chicken broth helped too .

You can do it... I believe in you!!
