Ok... I was one of the lucky ones to get my hands on this one early on.  (I love gadgets!!)  So, after about 4 weeks of using it, I thought I would post here on my experience.  (please realize, my S/N is 228, so with any new technology, there will be bugs...)

Why did I switch?  (I owned a 305)...  ANT+, Battery life and swim resistant.  It is basically the same unit other than those three aspects/features.  In the past, I had set it up on my bike, and wore a separate watch to keep overall time.

The Screen compared to the 305 is a bit clearer to read.  Not sure of the technical details here, but for me, a quick glance is all I need.  I have mine set up with 2 and 3 "box" screens with the top box always being the primary data point that I am looking for.

Size - MUCH better and MUCH more comfortable than the 305... I can easily slip this one under my wetsuit, hit start and let it go... wetsuit slides right over it with no problems at all...   Band is a bit short for larger types... I have mine on the 4th set of holes and it is tight.

I used my old hr strap from the 305 and there were zero issues.

I have used it for 4 races and here is where the bugs come in... one is clearly known as a "solution" is in the online support section on Garmin's website.   The first race was great... a Du and it tracked everything perfectly, uploaded perfectly and stored the information correctly.  However, races 2 & 3, both tri's, the data was there, but when I went to transfer the information (recorded in multisport mode), the data didn't show up and it was wiped from the Garmin device.  (slow learner, but now have the flag set to "don't delete" on the garmin device.

One of those races was a 1/2 distance where the detailed attributes of the race would have been valuable.

I have also had, on two occasions, the issue come up that I mentioned was included in their online support.  That is, you push the power button, it turns on for about 4-6 seconds and then turns off.  Also, if you try to charge it, it goes through a continuous cycle of on and off.  The solution they put out there is to "Reset" the unit... where you hold the power and mode button down and everything is erased.  All workouts, all settings... everything is gone.    Like I said, I have had to do this twice now with the last one being after I got home from my race yesterday and went to download the data.

Lastly, I have lost reception during a couple of runs where it was wide open to the sky... no clouds, no trees, no buildings.

Overall, I love the functionality and the changes that they made to the unit.  I also understand the early adopter type of bugs are normal and they will likely get worked through with time.  Not sure if it is firmware or software updates that are needed to correct the issues.

I will put updates here as I move forward.

Thanks for the update - I have been thinking about getting one, my wife has the 305 and it seems it has little faults but I love the GPS and software.  I hope they can get that fixed.

I have had mine about the same time and am generally loving it.
I have pretty big wrists so it doesnt look too huge on me, and I actually like the screen size, makes it a lot easier to read both on the bike and run, if you are in clear water you can even sneak a peak at it when you swim. I really like the 'alerts' you can set by sport, i.e. you can set it to vibrate every mile on the run, or every 5 on the bike, or just every 5 minutes on the swim. Seems to pick up and keep contact with satellites easily and efficiently and I havent had any major issues, just a couple of funny readings on the run here and there. GPS obviously does not work in the water (check outhttp://connect.garmin.com/activity/7401128 if you want to see how it comes out, it was a 1.25K swim that reads over 2 miles, also claims I got up to over 55mph in the water).

Only have 1 race under my belt using it and I dont think I have all my settings correct, when you start 'multisport' mode it allows you to tap the 'lap' button for each leg of the race (i.e. once at swim begin, once as you enter t1, exit t1, enter t2, exit t2 and finish) but I found that the data fields that I use when in 'single sport' mode did not carry over. I'll look into that and see if I can fix it. Happy to answer questions if anyone has them.

I am in the process up upgrading the firmware to 2.4 (as I type this...).  Hopefully this will deal with the power off issues.

On the data fields... do a "dry run"... that is step through the multi-sport by hitting start, lap etc... and when you are in the sport... go into the menu and change the settings...  then delete the workout after you are done... that should set things appropriately.   My first 1/2... I figured this out as I looked down the first time and the cycle time was set on fast... which is really fast!!!  can't even read the stuff... I set most to Medium for the screen cycle time.

Being a "large" tri-guy... the size isn't an issue for me either.  Love the speed to connect to sattelites etc.

I will update later this week with any improvements I see with 2.4 firmware!

Yep... it took a few tries to get things rolling and updated, but after about 15 minutes of downloading it finally took.  Did a bike and a run and the time to lock was MUCH longer now.  could have been the time of day or something, not sure.  With the update... again, it wiped out my user settings and had to go through everything for a third time!?

Still struggling with the ANT Agent to Garmin Connect... at this point I am thinking user error, so I am going to step through everything tonight, but again with my workouts last night.  bike and run, they both got uploaded and nothing showing up in Garmin Connect?

Update... New 2.4 firmware loaded and first workouts complete...

Now... literally picking up Satellites in less than 20 seconds... Deleted and reinstalled ANT+ Agent and downloads are coming through fine even with multisport mode...   could the fixes in 2.4 have cleaned it up?   keeping my fingers crossed!

Lovin' it today!!!!

SO i just picked one up yesterday... man this thing is alot more confusing than my 405.  Do you know if there is a swim mode on it?  I went swimming with it today and just set the watch to have a timer so i could hit lap over and over...  but i'm wondering, is there an actual swim mode?

I had no problems with it, there is no 'swim' mode, just set it to 'other' and decide what fields you want (I would suggest 'time' only as the rest are pretty much useless when swimming).

So... since the upgrade to 2.4 firmware... still running great.  Sat. pickup is nearly amazing, litterally seconds.  I have been using the Custom and Interval training quite a bit lately, sort of a pain to program with the watch.  Still waiting for the software to build on the computer and upload.

Correct, there is no "swim" mode, just other.  This is one thing that I think that they should change.  the unit continues to try and find sattelites during the swim and messes with the "totals"...  would much rather have it just be a simple stopwatch in a true "Swim" mode that then changes when you hit "Lap" in multi-sport.  There are probably issues with this WRT programming etc., but would be much better than my Oly swim from last week showing 2.7 miles!

At this point... watch is a keeper!

Thank you guys for posting this info.  I'm still holding out on upgrading from the FR305 until the 310 is 'less new'

*Here's to hopes of greatness!

Is there the option to use the 'Other' option indoors?  Then swim with it as you wish.

I don't use the multisport mode on the FR305 as I understood that it won't load to BT.  So I've just used the bike/run and manually switched from bike to run.  So I wonder if there is the option to swim 'indoors' and then switch to bike 'outdoors' and run 'outdoors'   Just a thought, so then it wouldn't need satelite signal, you could just use the time, but you would lose the distance.

thanks for the updates... I would think just the longer battery life alone would be a great thing, People doing IM's always are trying to find ways to use the 305

even on my 305 when it's being charged by the computer I will hear it turning itself on and off while charging, I totally forgot to look for software updates..

thanks again

You could certainly do it that way.  My comments were more specific to the Multisport mode... the down side there is if you accidentally hit "lap" during the race, it could get frustrating.

I'm not sure if you can do that during a Multisport workout though.  I will give it a shot

battery life right now is running around 45% for 6 hours of time.  (that has been my experience so far)... this weekend, I have a long ride and run, and am going to see how far I can push it...  till it runs out of power and will drop some notes here.

When i'm in multi sport mode, it won't seperate my times?  Like on my 405 i can switch sports for my bricks and it will start my timers over so i can just view the data for my run after i bike...  can i set this same thing up on the 310?  i have it on Auto Multisport....  this watch is alot more complicated than my 405.  Also, did you transfer the data from your old watch to the new one?

can you change the setting on it to how it locates the satellites??  People used to do something with the 305 where it wasn't looking for the satellites as often or only would use the HR and timer, using their bike computer for speed then switch it for the run and that somehow didnt' drain the battery as much

The 305 has the indoor mode option on the screen where you pick your activity which shuts off the GPS - I assume the 310 has the same thing?

Have you had a chance to compare the new HRM strap to your older 305 strap? I have the 305 strap but the new one looks a lot more flexible/tigher (like my polar). Not sure if I should spend the 50 bucks though.

I've had the 310xt now for about 3 weeks.  Been a little bumpy up to now.  Most of the trouble is sending data to the PC, not with the 310xt, itself.

I've had to reset the 310xt a couple of times, loosing my workout data (bummer).  Was about to do it again, until I updated today (7/17 - updates just released today - Ant and TC).  Data xfer issues solved.

Looks as if there was just the usual early adopter (bleeding edge) problems.  But, they seem to be ironing out most of them pretty quickly.  As of today, no more problems - yet.

I own both the 305 and 310 - my general overview:

The 310xt is reasonably smaller than the 305, seems to find the sats faster than the 305.  But, in reality, it is just an 305 with a few more features. (explaining the 305-310 numbering)

As for the swim, the 310 seems to be just as unreliable seeing the sats during the swim.  Funny thing though, before the firmware updates, the 310 seemed to track ok during the swim.  After updating, not so much.  It looks like I'll have to keep the 310 in my swim cap, just like the 305, to get an accurate sat mapping.

As of right now, I own the 305 heart monitor (new one on order).  It seems to not send at all through the water.  So, forget heart rate during the swim.  Hope the new one does better.

All in all:

Except for the data transfer pains, I really like the 310xt.  Feels more comfortable (and less obvious when wearing it) and the screen seems more readable.  Love the battery life.

I only wish that I could get good sat readings (like my first swim) and hear rate during the swim.

Any one having trouble downloading (or uploading) to BT? My 310xt loaded perfectly on tuesday. Now, it will only load the time and distance--it will not load lap data. I have even left it "uploading data" for well over an hour but it just keeps running without loading the data. There isn't that much--only a 2 hour bike ride.

One more thing--when I try to upload to BT, if I upload it to "Training Log" I get a different distance then if I load the same route to the "Route" .. It is very weird.

My garmin also turns off and on and off and on constantly while it is charging. I don't get it. I didn't see anything on the garmin.connect page that would be an update, but maybe I missed it???

Mine also recorded the date/time incorrectly on one of my runs and then erased it the next day. I did a 3 mile run at 6 a.m. friday but it recorded it as being done at 5pm thursday.  By this morning the entire history was erased EXCEPT for a run I did not do on April 6.  I didn't do a run april 6 since I DID NOT HAVE THE GARMIN until last week.

Anyway, I am a little frustrated with this orange monster right now. >
