I just started swimming a few months ago and I'm doing my first triathlon in less than 3 weeks. For those of you who have completed at least one race, what's your sustainable swimming pace per 100 yards...IN THE POOL. If you can post whether you're FOP, MOP, or BOP (front, middle, back of the swim pack) that would be helpful, too.

I'm trying to get an idea of what to expect on my first 1500m open water swim!

My pool pace is typically around 1:45 per 100 yards, and I would say in races that I am typically around the middle overall in the swim, typically around 2/3 from the top in my AG. I think that has alot to do with inexperience in OW though.

I've never timed myself swimming 100 yards because I don't have a pool to do so. At a swim meet, I swam 100m in 1:21 however this was in a race situation and I dove off the blocks, so there is a bit of an advantage there. I swim 100m during practice in 1:30. I can do this consistently about 8 times with a 20 second rest.

Oh sorry, just read your post a bit better. My sustainable pace is 1:45 for 100m. This brings me in at around 25min for 1500m. I am a MOFOP.

I don't know if these numbers would be able to help you or not. I guess long story short is I add about 15sec/100m if I have to sustain the pace for 1500m.

Maybe you could look up the race results from last year's tri and see where your time will place you.

My steady pace up to a mile is around 1:27 to 1:30 per 100 yds. If want to really push it I can sustain 1:18 to 1:20 up to 500 yds. I recently got my swim stroke analyzed and with new drills and modifying some flaws in my technique it made a HUGE difference in terms of speed but most important energy efficiency.

In the pool, I'm usually around 2' per 100. But that's not always indicative of open water pace. Generally, in a race situation in open water, I'm about 27 mins per 1/2 mile.

Wellll.....

I can do x100 repeats at about a 2:00/100 pace, given at least 30sec rest (more like 1:00) between them...

So I guess the closest thing I have to a *sustainable* x100 pace is 3:00/100.

Now, if it's breaststroke, I can bring it in a little bit faster sustainably, but not much faster.

But then I've only been swimming crawl stroke since about October.

Never done an OW swim yet.

I'have no trouble with a 2:00/100 pace forever. In doing 100s, anything less than 1:40 I'm thrilled with, with 30sec rests. For 100 repeats that are more typical, I'm happy with 1:45-1:50. I am a MOMOBOPer in two Oly swim legs that I've done! Except my first sprint, I was clearly MOP, and nearly MOFOPer for women.

Historically I have been able to sustain 2:00 per 100 for the mile. I'm a MOP'er out of the water.

We'll see this year if I've picked up any. My 1/2hr benchmarks the last 2 weeks have been coming in around 1:46/100.

I'm a MOPer in almost every race I do.  My race pace for 1,500m is about 1:40-1:45 and that would be about 85% effort.

I can go 1:35-1:40/ 100 meters for a while, although I have never done a full 1500 meters in the pool. I usually keep it around this pace for a 4x500 M on :25 sec rest. I`m hoping that my race pace will be significantly faster since these have been very easy, base building swims.

Have you joined the swim lots challenge?

I'm definately a BOPer. My 1/2 iron swim time is 1:03. In the pool right now I am averaging a 2:30/100 for 3000 yards straight swim. If I do sets of 500 I'm about 2:20, but then I rest a minute or so between sets. Anyway one advantage is I never have to look for my bike. It's always the only one left!!

2:00/100 will get you 30 min/1500 which will put you respectably MOP in most races.

Back of middle of the pack... my open water swim is slower, even with the adreneline flowing... maybe it's because of all the zig-zagging I do.

My typical main set is 20x100@1:45, but I am at the point of dropping the interval down to 1:40. I complete in 1:25 - 1:30 and seem to be able to keep it going forever. Last night I did 25 of them and just ran out of pool time...

If only my bike and run were half as good!

I am a FOP guy for a sprint, but then I end up way in the back by the time it is all over.

At Tanner (which was shortened to a 5k due to weather) I had planned to just blow it all out in the swim and try to be first out of the water. It would have been my only claim to fame! Unfortunately, no swim and no bike. Apparently lightning can't get you if you are running...

my pool pace is consistently <2:00 (1:30 is fast for me, 2:00 is slow. it varies, depending on the day, if i'm doing drills, etc...and in the case of this weeks' swim, i get slower if i haven't been swimming in 2+ weeks!). in races i've been in the top 30% or so for the swim, even when swimming 'slow' for me (for example, 2:29 for my first tri last year). every race is so different that its hard to know how you'll do. pool swimming is so different than open water. you may do much better than you expect!

I just started swimming a few weeks ago. I still don't know how to 'flip turn' which costs me time each lap, but I'm able to swim 100's in about 2 minutes at a effort I can maintain for as long as I want. I've gotten a lot better in the last month - I couldn't swim 100 yards when I first got in the pool - but I still have tons of room for improvement. I can 'sprint' 25's in 18 seconds, but I don't think I could keep that pace for very long.

Never done a tri before so I have no idea where I'll be position wise. My first one is this weekend, which will also be my first open water swim. Should be interesting. My swim goal is just not to drown.

According to Google, 1 meter = 1.09 yard

That said...I will definitely be a BOPer in my races.  I am about 2:45/100 meter.

Last time I timed myself for 1000m I think I ended up with ~16:30 so I guess that puts me around 1:35ish but I've been improving my swimming consistently the last couple months so I bet I could average 1:30 or so by now in a pool...I use minimal push off the wall and only glide a body length or two before I resume stroking.

i can do 12 x 100 at 1:50 or so with :10 rest at each 100, have not do anything loger than 1000 yards open water - doing a 1500 meter open water Memphis/May 22 - I tell you then how I do

my pool tine for 1500 meters is 37 minutes, puts me at BOP -I beleive I can do 32-33 minutes as my pools times are at a HR of 98 bpm - I still need to learn how to pace my self properly without sacrificing energy/speed

I'm BRUTAL!  I can only go around 2:30/1000 m which means I'm one of the last one's out.  I can usually hammer and catch a lot of people on the bike, but I have to sit up towards the end of the bike because I'll hit my LT.  Then I can usually catch a few running.  But the problem is I will forever be a MOP'er until I can get my swim times down.

My sustainable pace in the pool is mid 1:30's. I'm typically a BOFOP in a race and I'm usually starting at the back of my waves, so I'm sure I lose some time there.

I average 2:11 to 2:15 per 100 yds for an hour long straight swim in the pool, which is what I usually do.  I am pretty close to the slowest person in the pool among the regular lap swimmers.

I usually do about 1:30 pace in a oly distance race, but I try to conserve energy for the bike and the run, because I'm a strong swimmer and a slow runner. In shorter sprints of a 1/2 mile or less I can do about 1:10 to 1:15 pace per 100.  This usually puts me in the F.O.P for the swim , but the m.o.p for the entire race.  I always say, that the swim portion of the triathlon has very little to do with the overall outcome of the entire race. I can destroy most people in the water, only to have the same people blow by me on the bike!
