In another post I heard a woman who trained exclusively for a 1/2 IM on the trainer. This got me thinking...

What's the longest you have spent on a trainer in one training session? Do you do long rides on it or just short high intensity?

It was a few weeks ago, there was a big rugby union match between SA and the Poms and lousy weather outside so parked the bike on the trainer in front of the TV and started. Cant say that I enjoyed it but at least we beat the Poms and I got my hours in the saddle. Dont think I will do it again in a hurry.

I was planning on doing a 24 hour bike race in February this year. I live in MA and race was in FL, I couldn't get my head around doing 12-14 hours on the trainer in a day over the course of a 4-6 weeks.

This year I'm planning on doing the race....will learn to love the trainer or go to FL for a long weekend to get a 14 hour ride in. I can do 3 hours no problem.

When I was training for my HIM, my wife went away on business and I couldn’t find a babysitter for my son, so I did a 2:45 ride on the trainer one night after he went to sleep. I think I finally finished around midnight. I woudn't want to make a habit of it, but it wasn't terrible.

One of the announcers during the Giro told a story of a coach who made his riders do 6-hour solo trainer rides while facing a brick wall in order to build their focus and mental toughness. I think I would prefer to be waterboarded.

I think I've gone up to 4. But then I fully accepted that training load is volume + intensity, and have begun to shorten, but increase the intensity of, longer rides that are forced to the trainer.

I think there was an article a few months back about Andy Potts and how he does ALL of his training indoors - trainer and treadmill! He felt it allowed him to focus on hitting his pace/power/etc targets more.

Heck maybe I finally won something.....  Training for IMCDA 2008 I did two 6+ hour training sessions on my Computrainer.

KONA 2004

IMCDA 2007

Yes it sucked but when you are married with two little kids you do what you gotta do......

Not really a "trainer" but I spent 3 hours on my recumbent exercise bike, cycling and playing Call of Duty 4 with my kids.  I set up the bike in front of a 57" TV with surround sound.  I completely forgot my legs were going but when people were throwing grenades at me, I was peddling my off.

One of my plans had "four days of 40".  So for four days in a row, I had to sit on the trainer and get in 40 miles.  For me, that was about 2.5 hours each day.  To make it even tolerable, I would take 2 to 3, 5 minute breaks just to stand up, change water bottles, etc.

HOWEVER, I think it's a matter of perspective.  I was sort of new to long distance training, so it really sucked.  But I was able to get in 90 minutes last night on the trainer no problem.  I could have easily put in another hour if I had to.  But now I'm used to longer durations in the saddle in general.

2:40 is my longest.  Unless I get really lucky with weather until my November IM, that number will probably be going up soon.  I can go for about an hour without getting bored, after that its not a whole lot of fun.

I was trying to get long rides in while it was snowing (stupid early season century) and ended up watching the entirety of The Sound of Music on the trainer. The most painful 174 minutes of my life. I was kind of hoping my bike would fall off the trainer and crash into the TV just to break the monotony.

Between 2-3 is my max - so far. I set up a chair in front of the cheapo trainer with my laptop on some books and watch netflix or dvds. Having something to focus on is the only thing that prevents ultimate boredom.

Last spring break, my wife and kids were going to be out of town for two nights. I planned to ride a hundred miles by myself on local roads and treat myself to the finest comestibles available. When the day arrived, it was 35 degrees and raining, so I did a livingroom century. There was a high table set up with food, drink, and the remotes, and I watched a lot of television while riding a steady zone 2 the entire way, stopping at each 20 for the necessary bodily functions. It was just under 6 hours of riding time, longer with the breaks thrown in, but it was a training goal that was going to be compromised. It would have been great to be outside but not on that day.

6 hour rides, do you just switch your brain off and not thin? How do you get through them? Even after about 3 hours outside I start to get a bit bored.

3 hours is my longest so far... However I am doing IM Utah and I live in northern Michigan.  I will be putting in some long hours on the trainer and the treadmill.

not going to lie, it royally sucked both times but what got me through was knowing that my goal was IM CDA, I don't think I could ever do it without a major goal looming out there...   just where I live people in cars have no idea that a bike has the same rights as them and we don't have bike lanes here....

EWWWWW.

I can't recall exactly but my longest was between 2-3 hours. However, I did clip out a few times to 'to go the bathroom' (I think I convinced myself I had to go much more often than I did because it was sooo boring) or get some more water.

For the people who have done around 4 hours +, do you get out of the saddle to stretch at all / often?

I did a few over 3 hours last winter.  That was enough.  Once the snow melted and we got above freezing (barely) I was back on the road.

Usually it is 1- 1.5 hours during the week in the winter. Last winter I did a couple of 3 hour rides on the trainer. The area had an ice storm of the century. The roads were cover with ice, downed trees and power lines for two weeks with no electricity so there was no riding outside. I had a portable generator to power a few lights and the TV. So a couple of time I powered up the TV and rode the bike on the trainier while watching a NFL football game. I varied my pace by doing high tempo intervals during the commercial breaks for some changes in pace. It worked and I may do it again this winter hopefully not during another ice storm.
