Just did 3:15 on a CompuTrainer- did 1 loop of IMCDA bike course to get familiar with the climbs.... Actually went faster than I thought it would, but 2 other groups came and went and did their own CompuTrainer rides next to me, so I had people to chat with. Doing IMCDA this year.

Originally posted by Dnn Do you people have a different trainer than me or something. 1.5 hours kills me; it's just tough and boring as hell. Even if I watch a movie I just get frustrated with it and really have to fight to get through a session (if it's longer than 60 min)

It takes both a good setup as well as practice to get the long sessions. It generally doesn't work well if you just try and go 3 hrs on your first indoor session, even if you've been riding outdoors for 4-5 hrs at a time regularly. Different mindset, different position demands (I find the trainer more demanding than outdoors due to the static position), and different power demands depending on what you're doing.

I have what I think is a solid functional setup for serious long training on the trainer. Dedicated space in the garage, powermeter + Trainerroad, large computer screen which I hook my laptop to, and BT headphones for video. Oh, and big fan. When I start the serious indoor stuff, anything over 90 mins is deathly hard, but after sticking with it, 3 hrs is no big deal. Trainerroad keeps you honest and from slacking on those long rides.

I'm doing a focused bike program and my longest have recently been 1:35 and this weeks sweet-spot ride will be 1:45. I was thinking during my last ride I need to get a KK Rock-n-Roll trainer to get some natural movement.

BTW, I didn't vote in 2009!

We have done a few 100+ 110+ rides in the last few years on the trainer.

When we do its not at full intensity, its just a way to get saddle time in and muscle memory for when the legs are worn out.

If you do set up in front of the tv put on a few good action movies and have a pizza delivered half way through. It sure makes it a better ride.

We regularly will do 50+ miles in a day. We try to get our Netflix DVDs and trainer at the same time.

If you have a TV dinner tray its nice to set up a place for water and remotes.
We have 2 said tables and set up the second one as a bike buffet.

Ok, that's definitely NOT 'train the way you're going to race!'

Nice buffet, though!

Not at all, the first and second 100+ milers on the trainer were.

1. It was over 100f out and we wanted to just ride the bike and watch as many harry potters as we could.

2. It was Christmas break from work (they gave us a few days off) and we did the same thing with a different set of movies.

We have a few outdoor 60+ and 1, 100 mile ride coming up in early spring here, and 1 thing I learned from making the bike buffet is that I WILL have sun-butter and honey sandwiches in either my bento box, or my camel back for the long rides, and cut into long finger size bits.

Take your time. One of the previous posters took almost 5 years.

Oh wow. I love it when this happens. There's a thread around that I commented on 3 different times. At least I only commented once.

Now THAT smorgasboard, plus the pizza delivery, and being able to draft one of the Raelert brothers or Pete Jacobs (at my pace, not theirs, to enjoy the booty) MIGHT just get me through an IM bike leg. (Hate gu, easily bored, motivated by scenery.....)
