Pre-race routine:

Got there later than I liked. Hung out with my wife until it was time to go. Swam a couple hotlaps and called it good.
Swim
  • 08m 37s
  • 481 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

This one was my best swim of the year. I think there's something psychological about knowing you can touch bottom if you need to. I drafted off of a couple guys until I passed them. Made my way around the buoy and headed home. Really no difficulty with this. 90% crawl. Great swim for me. That said, this thing seemed short.
What would you do differently?:

crawl the entire thing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

My transitions continue to shine this year (when they're not in the next area code.). I'm really pleased with this.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, really.
Bike
  • 47m 40s
  • 15.4 miles
  • 19.38 mile/hr
Comments:

This bike was solid for me. I kept it above 20 mph for most of the race, losing a bit (actually quite a bit) the last .3 mile when I was trying to get my new shoes off so I could pedal on top of them. Had I been able to navigate that better, I would've been stronger still.

Pushed it hard on this course and it paid off (although did burn me on the run). I decdided I was going to hammer as hard as I could and worry about the run when I get there. I don't know if maybe 3 people passed me the whole race. This was my strongest performance of my tri career.
What would you do differently?:

More water on the bike (I had only filled 1/2 of 1 bottle with water, planning for the head - this left me with no water for a gel so I skipped the gel altogether).
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

Great T2 again, and that's even with moving from biking shoes to running shoes (first time for that). I think I've got these transitions down.
What would you do differently?:

not drink just before running (probably cost me :05)
Run
  • 29m 42s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, this run is what kept me from PRing for a second straight race. My calves didn't cramp again which was good. My side did, though and in the unexpected heat, this was a tough run. I've had better.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe save a little more from the bike for the run.

Nice job.  I was there and the temps were awful for the run so don't beat yourself up over it.  Funny, you thought the swim was short.  I thought the Oly was long!  Congrats.

Great job out there today Jesse.  Conditions were definitely tougher this year, I think that's what helps make every race unique.  Your definitely making improvements with all your training and experience - keep it brotha.

Great job,  sure would have been nice to have gotten some training in the heat before a race like this.
