Anyone have good suggestions for easy snacks?  I can't eat almonds (allergic), but pretty much everything else is fair game.

Hi Artemis,

I'm a carboaddict with some major sugar craving, so snacking is an issue here as well..

Are you allergic to all nuts? Or just almonds? Pecans are really good for you as a snack, as well as walnuts, but walnuts are higher in fat.
Do you like cheese? I love cheese. I must have been a mouse in my previous life. Low fat string cheese is an exellent snack.
Do you like dark chocolate? Even a little bit of good-quality dark chocolate takes care of cravings and you are better off than eating twizzlers.
My rule of thumb is that you have to stay within 130 calories for your snacks. 100 would be even better.
Other things to consider: bananas, non-sugary cereal (once again, pre-measure a 100-calorie serving as a snack), oranges (sweet, but still good for you), Kavli crispbread (http://www.kavli.com/wps/wcm/connect/com/Products/Kavli+Crispbread/)

I'll post more as they come to mind..

Glad to know I'm not alone in my carb and sugar loving!

I'm allergic to just almonds, although I tend not to eat many nuts because I am afraid that I'm going to be allergic to more.

I LOVE cheese and dark chocolate.  I ran out of my giant bag of string cheese from Costco, so I need to pick up another one.  I hadn't heard of Kavli Crispbread, but I will check that out.

Thanks!

DMW -   I'm suppose I'm oversensitive about it though, because I have gotten random inspires over the years from people telling me I don't eat enough, when they don't have any idea that I'm very short.

I beg to differ! We are not very short. We are vertically-challenged ))

My new favorite snack is 2% greek yogurt with fruit and walnuts.  I eat it plain to cut out the sugar, but I will sweeten it with a few drops of stevia.  At work I usually eat it as my morning snack while it's still cold in my lunch.  I also made a tzatziki dipping sauce (which was great on salmon or just with veggies), and I'm planning on making cheese with the greek yogurt too.  I'm pretty addicted!

Some other ideas: hummus and veggies.  Hard boiled eggs and a piece of fruit.  Wasa Crisps with laughing cow cheese.  String cheese and fruit maybe?

One of my favorites is low-fat cottage cheese with fruit - pretty much any kind. If you don't have dairy issues, I think cottage cheese is a great, easy, low-fat, lower calorie protein source! I also really like vanilla yogurt with a little granola mixed in - may be a little higher in sugar content than some would like, but it's really yummy!

I don't keep nuts of any kind in the house because my son is allergic to all tree nuts. I find sunflower seeds a pretty good substitute.

Fruit is always a good snack, as well as easy to grab and munch raw veggies like baby carrots or sugar snap peas.

wgraves7582 - 2009-08-19 10:53 AM I have a question - Does anyone (with the training we do) justify food intake based on workouts? That is how I was eating for a long time - hey I work hard (roofing) so I can eat whatever I want.

It's always important to remember that the bottomline is not to be skinny, it's to be healthy.
Even if you can burn enough calories to allow you eating a pound of M@Ms every day, it's not a healthy practice. I try (please note I said "try" ) to up my calories by adding extra protein servings or good carbs like kashi, oatmeal, and occasionally multigraine pasta..

DMW - 2009-08-19 10:01 AM JC5066 - this thread wasn't really started with the intention of having people calling others out on what they are (or aren't) eating.  Also, I notice you aren't posting what you ate this week.  Are you just here to critique everyone or do you plan to participate?
!

Then what's the point of posting?  Would you rather have someone who is eating poorly just  continue to do so?  Part of supporting is critiquing others and calling them out.  Question why people do things is good too.  It's called supporting them.

Apparently you just want to show off what you're eating for no apparent reason.  So be it, to each his own.  I guess I will avoid this thread from this point on.

Sorry - she says she doesn't mind so I probably should have minded my own business.  It just seemed a little weird to me that you're not putting up your own intake, but you pass judgment on someone else's diet based on 1 or 2 days of posts.  It didn't come off as supportive, but it sounds like I misinterpreted.

I kind of debated whether this thread should be in the nutritional cafe or here, but there were people here mentioning that they wanted to create some accountability, so that's why it's here.  That's why I'm here too.  And if someone decides that their goal is to eat 1300 calories a day to lose weight, and decides that 800 of them should come from cheese, I think that's their prerogative and it's not for me to judge.  But that's just me.  Anyway, let's move on.

Hello everybody!  I think this is a great idea and I'd love to join in if I can.  I struggle most with snacking on sweets in between meals, so I'm trying to minimize that.  I welcome feedback, even criticism, if I start getting out of control with the sweets.  Eventually I'd love to get my diet to an ultra-low fat diet (like around 15 g of fat per day), but that's unrealistic to try to achieve right off the bat.  (To put my sweet tooth into perspective, I calculate that I currently consume around 500-700 calories per day in empty sweets, so any reduction will help!

Thanks, Sue

Hey Sue!  Look forward to your posts.  I've managed to completely reform my sweet tooth, so it's definitely doable.  I wouldn't have said that a few months ago, though.  My approach to fat is at the opposite end of the spectrum though - I'm working on getting my fat intake up to around 30%.

Thanks for the welcome.  Your comment about what you're trying to achieve in terms of fat intake vs. mine is what makes this "challenge" so appealing.  We can all have varying ideas about how to achieve our goals.  As long as we support each other and share knowledge, tips and ideas, I think we'll have a really good group!

Here's my numbers for today (via BT's nutrition logs)

Calories:
1985
From fat:
312.28 (35.47g, 15.73%)
Carbs: 1276.76 (326.29g, 64.32%)
Protein:
395.96 (101.19g, 19.95%)

FWIW - I'm about 5'5", currently 123 lbs.  On days when I work out, I'd like to be in the 1700-1800 range, other days I aim for closer to 1500-1600.  (and yes, I *did* work out tonight).

I pretty much consider it a good day when I don't raid a cookie supply somewhere!

margarita - how'd it go?  Did you make it?  I had a bite of my husband's chocolate chip cookie today.  But only one bite.  We have so much junk food in the house... if he posted his food up here, you'd probably all die of shock.  Anyway, here's my Thursday.  I'm never hungry for dinner after my run, so I just try to eat my real meals during the day.  I'm a little low on the veggies today.

I went shopping for snacks and food at Trader Joe's this evening.  I picked up raw cashews, blueberries, dark chocolate, and steel cut oatmeal.  The cashews are so good!  I had some as a snack when I got home.

The only thing that concerns me with the nuts is that they are high in fat.  I know it is supposed to be good fat, but I'm not used to having so much in one snack.
