Subject: Anyone double up bike shorts?
It was recommended to me today to swim in my sports bra and very thin tri shorts (ones I would never consider riding any significant distance in) and then in T1 put on comfy bike shorts (think De Soto 400 mile shorts).  After the bike I would take off the bike shorts and run in the thin tri shorts.

Anyone do this?

I just do the whole race in tri-shorts. I train that way so it is a non-issue for me.

I would think that wearing actual tri-shortsfor swim and run would be a waste. Why not just some cheaper compression shorts. You don't need the chamois for swimming and running.

Are you sure they didn't mean to change out of the tri shorts and into bike shorts? What would be the point or benefit of riding in two pairs of shorts? I can't imagine doing that for 112 miles...

I have quite a few friends that do this. They then pull the bike shorts off for the run. (Some of them are in races without changing areas, like 1/2 IMs, and some of them did thsi for IM) I haven't tried it yet but plan on doing so at some point to see how it feels.

No, he definitely suggested doubling up.  I was thinking about swimming in a sports bra and bikini style nike bottoms under my wetsuit and then taking off the swim bottoms and putting on bike shorts with a nice padding for the bike and then switching to running shorts for the run.  He suggested the double up as a time saver and for comfort.

It might actually be a moot point because the Desoto 400 mile shorts say they are tri shorts and can be worn for all 3 legs.

Wow. I do all my rides in tri shorts and don't even own bike shorts. I'm curious why you wouldn't consider any significant distance in them.

My taint hurts just thinking about doing that. I wish I could handle long rides in tri shorts, but it just isn't happening for me.

I currently wear 2XU tri shorts and I have noticed that as my cycling distance increases, the comfort I have always enjoyed in these shorts has started to diminish, so I was looking for another pair of shorts.  The suggestion seemed odd to me too, which is why I asked about it here.

Right now I am leaning towards changing out of my cycling shorts into running shorts, so I can swim in whichever tri shorts I decide to wear, cycle in them and then change for the run.  We'll see, I have 12 weeks to change my mind 100 times!

You might also have the 2XU shorts with the felt pad only. That's made for shorter (<30 mi) rides. 2XU makes a distance pad short that is completely different.

I've also found Zoot Ultra tri shorts felt good for my last HIM and that's what I plan on wearing this weekend for Timberman.

I haven't done this, but I know some folks that swear by it.  You might as well give it a shot and see if it works for you.

edit:  I'm pretty sure they prefer the bib johns for this.

I have the distance 2XU shorts.  I think I need to experiment more with Chamois butter or body glide too - that might help even more than a new pair of shorts.

I am the opposite. I can't wear bike shorts. The padding is too thick and make it much more uncomfortable. Like DanielG, I do all my rides in tri shorts.

I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do myself.  I think if you look at the big picture taking the time to change from swim bottoms, to bike shorts to running shorts is worth it.  I don't think it's going to cost you much time in transition.  When doing an IM...comfort comes first! Wink

I have a Zoot trisuit (not shorts, but a full, short legs, sleeveless suit) with a very thin chamois.  For Olympic distances, it works great for me.  For HIM's or longer, I like to have a thicker pad, so I throw bike shorts on over the trisuit in T1, and strip them off in T2.  No time wasted finding a changing tent (if there even is one), and I get the benefits of a plush chamois for the 56 or 112 miles.  And the trisuit is great to run in.

But hey, what works for me may or may not work for you.

For my 2 HIMS here in AZ it was in the mid 90s and way too hot, and no changing areas.  So I swam in a one piece swim suit, threw on my bike shorts and top over that, then took them off and had a pair of running shorts I had cut the "underwear" out of and just threw them on over my swim suit and ran in that.  The swim suit under the bike shorts was not my ideal scenario, but a bike scenario that does NOT involve bike shorts is unimaginable for my tender bits, so it worked.

For all of my long rides and for IM, I wear 2 pairs of tri shorts. The shorts on the bike slide against each other rather than against you. It seriously, seriously helps out with chafing. I don't like bike shorts b/c the padding gets annoying to me after a while, but the 2 pairs of tri shorts work great. I pull off one pair for the run, and I'm good. I also just slap on a bunch of Assos cream as well before the ride and am happy. I use the 2xu shorts and don't have many problems with them!

Nope.  Tri shorts all the way no matter what the distance.  Really, with some decent chamois butter and some T.I.T.S. you should get used to it.

It's at the point now where I have several pairs of bike shorts in my drawers that I haven't worn in 5 or 6 years.  I really should just pitch them.

Edited to say...I can't say T.I.T.S.!  WTF???? (tried to abbreviate it without the periods the first time...)

That's what I do (well, I wear compression shorts, then in T1 I pull on bike shorts, then in T2 I rake off the bike shorts and put on running shorts. My rear end needs the cushion.

Like others, I cannot bike in bike shorts anymore unless it's very short (less than 2 hours). The excess padding has caused chafing on long rides and I don't find them comfortable anymore after training all year in tri shorts.

Honestly, I think you need to be uncomfortable for awhile in tri shorts in order to get used to it. I wear Zoot Ultra and there is minimal padding, barely any really, but the seams are super high quality and I can do 100+ miles in them with no problem. I can't/don't use chamois butter or body glide either because I hate that slippery feeling and it caused my shorts to ride up into uncomfortable places when I attempted it on a long ride so I ended up wiping all of it off as soon as possible and have never gone back since.

You should decide how much clothing changing you really want to do in the race, and then depending on how much time you have, just experiment in training with acclimating to the different outfits. Like I said, it took awhile, but now I wouldn't do any long ride in anything but the Zoot Ultras.

I would suggest looking into different saddles if you feel the need to double up on the shorts. Two pairs of shorts just sounds like a bad chaffing waiting to happen.

I wore tri shorts only. The same thing from beginning to end. I was one of the few not nekkid people in the change tent after the swim, but I got out of there pretty quickly.

Really, my motivation had less to do with speed (because I am not fast) and more to do with simplicity. In every way possible, I made sure I kept my approach to IM clean and easy.

Tri short, the whole time for any distance, IMO.

If your position is correct, your saddle selection is correct, and you have put the time in sitting on it, tri shorts should be all you need, me thinks.

I even worry about having something under you bike shorts.  They are supposed to be worn with nothing on underneath, so having another pair under would worry me.  I would go the route of changing out my swimsuit into bike shorts, then put on running shorts with underwear before doubling up.

WHATEVER you do, practice it a couple times first.  And not for short rides.  Get some long rides in with the way you plan to race.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I think I am going to keep it simple as well.  I am going to swim in my tri shorts and if I decide to change it would only be in T2.  I have been asking a lot of questions because I am putting my race plan together and I want to be sure I have thought of everything.  I have only been wearing my tri shorts for all of my training rides and I find that they are very comfortable.  I love my saddle too.  A little Body Glide helped a lot this weekend in the way of comfort.
