Subject: Golf Anyone?
I would rather suffer on my bike for 5 hours than play golf for 1 hour...but that's me.  It wouldn't seem that people who are into triathlon/multi sports would not be interested in golf, but I could be totally wrong!  Just curious if there are people out there who are into golf and triathlons too?

Before I really got into this I played a lot of golf- 3 or 4 times a week. However, R/B/S and races doesn't really leave a whole lot of free time any more. I used to walk the course, once I wore a pedometer and it recorded almost 6 miles total.

Hello

Golf is a big family event for me but I dont play & practice several times a week.  I dont have time due to work not tri-training.

I sneak out and hit golf balls when no one is looking.  I wish I had more time to play.  Sneaking out today doesn't sound like a bad idea actually!

Played golf since I was 9 and even held a single-digit handicap.  Interest in the game dropped years ago when I started cycling seriously.  Since the tri bug bit last Fall I have not played once.  Sure there are noble things about the game (like tradition of honesty, self-officiating), and the kinesthetic complexities of a good swing have some interesting parallels with other sports (like coordination of upper/lower body movements to produce power).  But I now find playing golf boring.  Much rather ride a metric or century than spend that time walking (and waiting around!) a golf course.

I have an 8 handicap, and play in a mens league with a friend from work. Don't practice as much as I should, but oh well...

There is no better feeling in the world than when you hit a "pure" shot.

Subject: Walk 9 on My Rest Day RE: Golf Anyone? (Jonesing For Lactic Acid)
Monday is my rest day and I walk nine (with a pull-cart) in the company league, although this is all the golf I ever play since I started race training twenty months ago. This is actually a pretty good compromise between resting after the long weekend ride and run, and jonesing for some lactic acid. My handicap has gone up from an 18 (ie bogey) to a 22 (ie hacker). I do have to admit though, that while I still enjoy golf, next Spring in the golf league I am going to sign up as a "substitute" rather than a regular player, because if I miss a day on the weekend I feel all funky and would rather have a catch up tri-training day on Monday than a round of golf.

I used to be a 13 handicap in my twenties. I also had a job in sales so it was important not to look totally foolish on the course. Since then after 3 kids I find that I like training for tris more and it is more family friendly. I can train for 60-120 minutes at home or before people wake up or after they go to bed. I cant do that with golf. I can go get a 3-4 hr ride in on a saturday morning and be back before lunch. I would like to play cause it was fun but I cant find time for it now.

I golf on weekends. I finally broke and got a 7 handicap. I fit my workouts in the afternoons after my round of golf, I usually tee off at daylight. I work hard about 2-3 hours a day during the week and use the weekends for my long endurance training.

On a lighter note, not a good idea to do a marathon in the morning, then think you can play golf that afternoon.

Love to play golf as a matter of fact during yeasterday's long ride I was thinking what a great game golf is. Maybe it was the lactic acid talking. The strange thing is whenever I'm on the course I'm thinking this would be a nice day to be running/biking.

My wife loves golf so I do have to go out once in a while. Just part of the give and take and I do most of the taking during IM training.

happy training.

I use golf for two things. Hang out with people I like that do nothing else and drink beer. I am not bad and play just as good as these friends that play 3-4x week so its not that I completely hate it because I suck. I just hate the game in general. It may be the only other sport other than triathlon that is that expensive too.

When I lived in Texas I loved golf but the inexpensive public courses were very nice and I could play a lot.  When I moved back to PA, I gave it up for several reasons.  The course were a bit more expensive, the cheaper ones were not that nice, and since you don't get a full 12 months of playing, it was typically very crowded during golf season.

It's a great game and I'll probably get back into it when I retire.

I used to play disc golf pretty 'seriously', enough to make a little pocket change playing 'pro' -- scare quotes there because except at the very highest levels, disc golf is often played either drunk or high or both, which was my m.o. in those days.  I've never played ball golf.

I still play casually sometimes (minus the mind-altering substances), and I still love the feeling of throwing a 'perfect' shot.  I'm in such better shape now that I could probably be better than I was before if I practiced, but I'm not that interested anymore.

After seeing the thread, I did go hit some balls, and then I played nine....sweet!  I think the golf swing is like the swimming stroke actually.  The fine tuning for a better result, the repetition to get it grooved.

100% golfer right here.  I say this because it's my job.  I am a PGA Head Golf Professional at a country club.  When I had more free time, I used to practice and play quite often - as in almost everyday.  Now that I have moved into a higher position, I have many more responsibilities, I don't get to practice.  Therefore,  I very rarely play.  In order for me to play my best I have to practice.  It's a cycle.

In my position, I have many different responsibilities from running tournaments, teaching the game, and selling merchandise in my proshop to name few.

For the record, most of my free time is spent training;  not golfing.  I'd rather be healthy than be able to shoot around par all of the time.

Before kids, wife and I used to play 4-5 times a week got down to an 8 handicap, country club members, etc.  Then kids came along and now I probably play 4-5 times a year,

Still have a lot of fun when I do play and my 5 year old has been out for 3-4 rounds allready but just not nearly enough time to train and play golf, will probably get back at it in the future.

I have just started playing golf...and it's a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I have played team sports my whole life...semi-pro soccer, football, paintball (which is easily more expensive than either golf or triathlon) and baseball and softball.  Triathlon training this year has been an awesome experience and I am looking forward to it being a great season next year.
Most of the people I work with play golf, and after several invitations I finally went. It was a blast, and I have gotten better each time I have played...that's always a great feelling.

Love golf just no time ever between not training, work and other hobbies (building cars).  Usually play a few times a year with my parents when I go up to NJ and visit.

I always come back wanting to play more but I just don't have the time or money to invest.

I started golfing when I was 8 with my dad and running when I was 12 in 7th grade for the cross-country team, so have been doing both my whole life (46 now).  I still play when I can and carry about a 9 handicap.  It is a great social game.   I usually play most of my rounds in the Fall when the family schedule is more relaxed, so looking forward to the next 3 months or so of golf!

I agree!  When I started I was horribly strong and it was difficult because I wanted to muscle everything.  Luckily I lived in Austin, TX at the time so before picking up bad habits I took lessons at Golfsmith.  The coaches were really good about having me relax and take easy swings to improve.

I'm starting to find that swimming and running are similar in that the key to both seems to be about relaxing and not trying to overpower things.  You just screw up and get yourself tired with no benifit.

I played golf a lot from junior high up until I started into triathlons 4 years ago, so about 35 years.  I worked at golf courses on the grounds crew and in the pro shop for about 6 years during and just after high school.  Golf is a great game.  However, if you are going to be good you need to practice not just play once in awhile.  I still play and practice a little but my expectations on the course have had a reality check.  I still have an occasional good round but w/o the practice time they are now the exception rather than the norm.  I played to as low as a 6 hdcp, pretty consistent 8 range.

There are some good parallels between golf and triathlons.  Driving, irons, putting are all a little different and each player typically has strengths/weaknesses just like s/b/r.   One difference between the sports is the range of results.  With tris your bad races & good races are not that far apart.  In golf there can be a huge gap between your good days and bad days.  There is no a much higher ceiling on how well you can score in golf on any given day than there is how fast you can s/b/r just due to physical limitations.

2 years ago I did what was called a Tri Quest, a run, bike, golf event.   It was a 2 person team event, combined times for a 5k run, followed by combined times for a 30k bike, followed by lunch then 18 holes of golf, consisting of 6 holes best ball, 6 holes best shot and 6 holes alternate shot.  A fun event.

When I retire I hope to have time to get out on the golf course and practice range more while still training and racing triathlons.

I was a natural at golf.  I started with my irons and quickly worked my way into the woods.  That's where I ended up losing my balls.  It turns out there was a lose nut on the end of the shaft.  Once I got that separated I found it easier to enjoy the sport more by watching it on TV.

I shoot pretty close to par when i play....I used to play 3-4 times a week.  Since IM started i usually only get in 2-3 times a month, but I love golf and i will still be playing 50 years from now.
