someone already mentioned cytomax, which is my drink of choice. I didn't see anyone mention Clif Shot Bloks yet though. I really love them, and use them much more than gels these days. They work just as well and I seem to tolerate them better.

All these corporate-made supplements are fine and all, but they cost a fortune compared to plain ol' bulk maltodextrin.

It's not a gimmick - Hammer perpetuem is likely 80, if not 90+% maltodextrin. It's a complex sugar absorbed in under an hour but won't spike your glucose, and has been used by pros for a long time.

1 cup yields 400ish calories per 28oz water bottle, with little flavor and no goopiness. Add whatever cheapo flavor you like.

Best part - it costs 1/10th anything out there. You can buy it for $57 for 50 lbs SHIPPED at Honeygrain. It works -I've been using it as my go-to fuel on 4-6 hour mountainous bike rides on wknds, and I haven't needed any solids whatsoever since.

Buy a big plastic "paint" pail to hold it all - Home Depot for about $7.

Split an order with friends - 2-4 of 'em. For one user alone, it will last about 2 friggin' years if you're using 4-6 cups per week. (I use 3-4 cups for an 80 mile ride)

I'm a BIG fan of GU gels and Gu2O (now called GU Brew).

For recovery, I really like Fluid.  For longer events, I will sometimes use Fluid during the race too.

This is a very interesting discussion & a question I've been wondering about.
I just looked up homemade sports drinks and found some interesting recipes using
green tea, sea salt and juice.  It seems to make sense to me that natural products would work well in our bodies.
Any one out there make their own?
It also seems to be a significant $$avings.

Drink: I buy bulk maltodextrin and mix it to the concentration I want depending on the workout. I add a nuun to it for flavor and electrolytes.

Gels: Lava Gels most of the time, but I've been using Roctane on longer/harder workouts this summer.

I was never a proponent of recovery drinks until this past year. I mix Interphase vanilla protein powder with OJ, or with maltodextrin and some water.

Hammer! Try the Heed. It works so well and doesnt make you feel sick. Also like the cliff shot little jells. I put them in a little thing at front of bike and then just pop one in my mouth every hour or so. They taste so good. Also good on runs.

I like Nuun, but have recently switched to Gatorade since that's what is going to be offered on the HIM course next month.  I have a gelbot which holds 2 shots of gel and 32 oz of liquid...I like vanilla hammer gel and orange gatorade--like a creamsicle!  I also like it with chocolate hammer gel.  I like Gu espresso love, too, it would be my favorite flavor of all, actually, in the gel family.

I eat LUNA moons on the bike and maybe one pack on a long run, for something to do!  I also like LUNA electrolyte drinks and their recovery smoothies--strawberry blended with a banana and ice is yummy.  I drink a muscle milk light if I've done a long workout, as well.

I am toying with the idea of putting some jelly beans or some other candy in my bento box to give me something to do during the HIM ride......not that riding isn't enough to do!

For drinks, I use only Hammer Heed and water.
As far as gels go, I can tolerate just about anything but I prefer Hammer Gels and Gu.

I can't stand anything super sweet so the Cliff Bloks and Sport Bean type of things are out for me.

I think you just have to experiment and see what you like and tolerate.

There was a guy awhile back that posted that he made his own "gel" by mixing honey, molasses, and salt.  I'd love to make my own, but am not quite sure what proportions etc. and if that combo gives the right nutrition.

Also, are electolytes pretty much just salt, or is it more complicated than that?

CarbBOOM and Gatorade. Then whatever is on the course come race day. I have pretty much a cast iron stomach. I can swap between brands with ease. On the trainer I do more solid food.
