Just got this:
Dear Cranberry Trifest Racer,
At this writing, the weather forecast for this Saturday, 8/29, includes heavy rains and strong winds due to Tropical Storm Danny. The weather forecast is more encouraging for Sunday, 8/30. We are monitoring this storm system carefully.

If Race Management determines the storm will jeapordize the safety of racers in Saturday???s sprint distance triathlon and kids duathlon the decison will be made to cancel the race. The last thing we want to do is cancel these races, but the safety of athletes is our highest priority.

You will receive another email tomorrow morning (Friday, 8/28) with our assessment of the weather situation for this weekend and the viability of running the events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks for sharing the e-mail. I have not receive that e-mail as of yet. If and when you get the e-mail tomorrow - could you post? Greatly appreciated! We are hoping that we get to race. It would be ashame to cancel it. All weather predictions are saying that the storm is moving more towards the east and that heavy rain may not hit the area until Sat afternoon, if at all. Crossing our fingers and doing our rain dance! Wink

Its not the rain so much as the "gale force winds."  At least the course is flat . . .

I'm worried that there could be trees/branches down on the bike course which might lead them to cancel even if the weather isn't too bad on Sunday.  I just checked weather.com and they still don't know which way the storm will go- southeast New England is still smack dab in the path for Sat-Sun so far.  Yikes.  Couldn't we just do it tomorrow??!!

Ugh... good point Kathy!  I hope that's not the case.

Tough call what the impact will be-- Here's where Danny's supposed to travel for the next few days:

Danny and New England

Yes at this point, signs are pointing to Danny making an impact on New England (especially southern New England) on Saturday afternoon and evening.

We truly don't know what intensity level Danny will be at by the time Saturday rolls around.

It's very difficult to get a handle on how Danny will evolve during the next 48 to 60 hours.

If I lived in eastern Long Island, Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts, I'd prepare for a storm capable of unleashing flooding rains and gusty winds - some of which will be strong enough to create power outages.

Prepare for tropical storm watches then warnings to be posted along the coast and for inland areas.

Danny will be quick-mover by the time Saturday rolls around so this actually won't be a complete washout of a weekend.

A much quieter and pleasant day awaits on Sunday when Danny is history.

Here's a look at three models forecasts for Saturday and the position of Danny.

that is from weather.com

I think they will be able to clean up the bike course but will flooding be an issue? One scenario is that the race gets started later.....especially since regardless it looks like sunday will be ok

... but the temperature inside the suit could become intolerable due to physiological events.  Innocent
I'm hoping it's wet and not windy!

Did the swim last Sunday in a full suit and it was warm but not intolerable(it also rained the night before) If it rains Sat it should cool the pond off a little bit for Sunday.

Thanks - recent reports suggest Danny not likely to develop into Hurricane and should blow through by end of Sat. So Sprint and Duathon could be an issue with 30MPH winds but looks like Oly should be okay. Getting psyched for this race!

I've decided to pull my kids from the duathlon scheduled for tomorrow, and I sent a note to the RD encouraging him to cancel the kids' race altogether.  I think that the combination of wind-driven rain and a potentially muddy, slippery course is an invitation for crashes and injuries.  Right now weather.com is calling for 2" of rain and 20-30 mph winds.

Dear Racer

After lengthy deliberation by Race Management and consultation with representatives from the National Weather Service we have regrettably made the decision to cancel Saturday???s Sprint distance triathlon and Kids Duathlon. At this time we expect the Olympic distance race will proceed as scheduled on Sunday.

The weather forecast indicates rain from Tropical Storm Danny is expected to begin some time tonight and become heavy over the Lakeville, MA, area beginning at 6AM  on Saturday with 20-25 MPH winds and gusts up to 35 MPH. Rains are expected to produce flooding on both the run and bike courses. These conditions would significantly threaten the safety of racers and for this reason we have made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday???s races.

As stated on our website, refunds will not be issued due to cancellation because of the weather. However, we intend to extend racers registered for the Sprint a partial credit that can be applied to the 2010 Cranberry Trifest Sprint. Registered athletes in the Sprint will be notified once the details of this credit have been finalized.

Assuming Sunday???s Olympic distance race is held as scheduled we expect to have a limited number of slots in that race become available due to registered Olympic distance racers not showing up for the event. Registered racers for the Sprint that are interested in claiming one of those spots are invited to come to the race site on Sunday morning at  7:00AM. Unfortunately, we will not know what race numbers become available until 7:30AM and we don???t know how many will become available so we can???t guarantee you will receive one, but if you show up we will do what we can.

Note that race packet pick up for the Olympic distance race remains as scheduled for tomorrow from 9:30AM to 7PM.

With Regrets,

Eric and Mark
