How far would you swim? My local pool is about to close, and the closest is 30 mins away. I plan on making the trek once a week. Assuming I swim 2k on a daily basis very comfortably, what should I do to at least maintain some form till im back in school in January?

If I were only swimming 1 day a week, I would try to swim in the 3,500-5,000 meter/yard range.

You know... as bad as that sounds, I probably have to agree.  I go to the pool as much as I can (3-4) times a week and I don't feel like I get enough swim time.  I don't think I could get by with just 1 day.

As much as you can.  You're not even going to maintain current fitness on 1X /week.  And I guess living in L.A....  is 30 minutes really that far?

I'd probably aim for 90 minute - 2 hour pool workouts

You do what you can, when you can. If you can only get to the pool once a week and you have 60-90 min to swim then that's what you do. I would recommend 3000-4000 yds which should not be a problem for you. Start with a nice warm-up of 1000 yds and make the main set in the 2500 yd range whether it be a strait swim or working some intervals.

You're not going to improve an with swimming once a week but you are also not going to lose anything either. FWIW - I did IMLP swim in 53 min swimming once a week. I would have loved to get in the water more but life just gets in the way and you do what you can when you can.

30 min is a long drive for a swim. The hour driving could be better spent running or biking. You'll benefit more putting the training there if your time is limited.

Just my $.02

Although I never swam that much this year and I often only swam once a week. If the OP has reasonably decent form then one day should be sufficient to maintain it.

The best thing you could do probably, as the others have mentioned, is do a much longer workout than normal. Aim for about 3-5000 yards and include:

A good warm-up
A kicking set
A drills set <-- very important for maintaining your form since you're not getting the repetition
An endurance set
and/or a sprint / threshold set.

Don't forget to cool down too and possibly include more drills then too.

I used to drive at least half an hour every day and sometimes twice a day to get to practice. Do you think you could bump it up to twice a week if you're that worried about losing your form?

X3.

I did my first HIM last year on basically 1 swim per week, never more than 2-2.5 K, frankly.  (Hell, I peaked at around 5-6K a week for IM training this year.)  I did just fine.  I generally alternated endurance sets with interval sets.  No drills.

I would definitely do more if I could do more. I <3 swimming. That 30 mins is with no traffic for some thats reasonable. Glad to hear some manage quite well on minimal swim time, will certainly try to do 4-5k on this day.

Great post.  I usually only swim once a week and have been doing so for 2 years and I have finished 2 HIM's in that time...  top half of the swim on both.

You do what you can and there is no need to switch to duathalon.

I'm still a super newbie--- but I have read that you can practice by doing a "dry tri" and use the rowing machine to substitute your swim. Now, that may not be great,  but if you only get 1 day in a real pool, what about using the rowing machine a few other times a week??

My closest pool is ALWAYS thirty minutes away. That's not exactly a "trek." Suck it up, buttercup.

how about cycling to the pool?

good post, btw...you do what you can with the time you have. if that means once a week, then so be it, especially if you're doing sprints or even oly's. good luck!

This is true I guess i've been spoiled by the pool and a very long bike path being less than 1/2 mile from my house.

It would entirely depend on your goals..

Assuming you are a MOPer..like myself..in the winter I went once a week and did 2k flat out..never did drills or anything. I didn't gain anything and I didn't lose anything.

If you are looking to improve that certainly isn't going to cut it..and like someone else said

I would do a 30-45 minute tethered swim (attached to waist).

Agreed, great post. Much more useful than the negative posts. This summer I'm training for my first HIM, and my swim workouts have been once a week. Granted, the swims are long--1.5 to 2 miles in open water, but I've never felt so confident about my swim--I know I'll be fine at my HIM.
