Subject: Knee issue

4 weeks ago I did a sprint tri.  The 4.6 mile run was a trail and gravel road run.  I don't remember any mis-steps durning the race but the next day my left knee was greatly swollen.  It didn't really hurt much though.  I iced it for a day.  I found that it hurt the most when I put my left leg on my right thigh....like when I was putting on my socks and crossing my legs.  The pain was on the side on my knee, not the kneecap area.

I took two weeks off running and when I tried to run, my knee hurt like hail!  So I took another two weeks off and tried to run today but it still hurts to run.  WTH?  It does not hurt at all to walk.  Nothing.  Not even a twing.  If I cross my leg, I can still feel a little discomfort on the side of my knee.

Any ideas what happened and/or how long it might be before I can run?

This seems somewhat similar to how my knee issues began, I hope for your sake that they don't end like mine. I had a very similar initial swelling incident after a hilly, 10 miler (back in May). 1st diagnosis was chondromalacia (runners knee), then it was ITBS, then an MRI showed no cartilage, meniscus, or ligament damage, but a deep bone bruise on the tibia (bone marrow edema). You could potentially have 1 or all of these things.

The bad part was after seeing a top knee guy in NYC, he said it was a running/bio-mechanical issue causing the edema and pain. He also said to hang up your running shoes. Now, I am going for a 4th opinion on the knee as I am not ready to give up.

I'd suggest seeing a doc, going to PT, if it doesn't get better then an MRI. Feel free to personal message me if you have any other questions - good luck.

Thanks.  Good info.  I will give it another week or so and then I'll go see an ortho doc.

Mine was meniscus... and it hurt doing certain things, like you said. Especially running. I've since had both knees done. :-/

Been training ever since

Some beach!  Tried to run on TM.  Ran 1/4 mile and was feeling ok then suddenly the pain was all over my knee and I had to walk.  No pain while walking.  So I cranked the elevation up to 10, set the speed at 15 mm and walked the next 1.75 miles.  There was no pain in my knee so I tried to run again but could not.

Got off and got on the bike for 15 minutes.  Got back ont he TM and ran at a 12 mm pace without pain.  WTH?!  I have no idea what is going on.

My kness is a little sore now.  It will be intersting to see if it's gonna swell up again.

Made an appt with an ortho/knee doctor for Monday morning.  Maybe he can tell me what's going on.

I don't really have anything to add other than for the first time in my life (I'm 48) my right knee is giving me issues similar to what you are experiencing.  kind of came on gradually I think from running hills and trails.  anyway, did an IM last weeked and it's somewhat swollen and too painful to run on.  I'm going to wait it out as I'm now in my off-season and I hope it's something that will heal with rest and ice.

Interested what you doc has to say about your knee...

if you have flat feet, and pronate...you might try SuperFeet Green inserts.

it worked wonders for me.  however, your case might be different and should see appropriate professionals.

Go the doc....could be any of the above.  My top three guesses 1-meniscus 2-patella irritation 3-IT band.  I know a good ortho in mobile if you are near there.

Your first guess is right.  I went to the doc and he said medial meniscus tear.  He ordered an MRI just to be safe which I had done this afternoon.  I go back in on Thursday to confirm it and probably set up surgery.

Does anyone know if I can bike with the tear?

You can probably ride the trainer.  Be acreful clippingin and out.  Swimming yes but no breast stroke kick and be VERY careful on the pool deck
