pay close attention at the pre-race meeting, I messed up on the bike course...probably could have been avoided if I had been listening better.

LAME! a DQ for messing up on a shortened bike course? In crappy weather? It's not like you were trying to cheat (I hope). Good for you to have gotten out there and raced. Sometimes Jack takes it all too seriously.
That said, it's good to know the rules and each RD (race director) has his/her own quirks. Main things to remember are to buckle your helmet whenever you're on the bike (good rule of thumb is to put it on and buckle it first, then take it off last at T2), do not draft on the bike (i.e. ride following the bike in front of you closely -others can fill in the exact measurements) and no headphones/ipods. Seems natural since you wouldn't want to be messing with such gadgets in T2 at a race anyway, but so many people train with them, they think they can run a race with 'em. It just ain't so.
Don't get discouraged. Triathlon is a helluva lifestyle and once you get a few races under your race belt, you'll get the hang of it. BTW - the Monster RDs are a lot less strict, so I've experienced. For instance, I only got a warning for tossing a Gu wrapper (in transition, too) at my first Monster. I always intended to pick it up afterwards, but i didn't know it was pack in/pack out. RD said I could have been penalized 2 minutes. Now the wrappers go in the trash can if available, or tucked into my tri-shorts leg for later disposal.
Keep on tri'ing.

I watched the Benbrook and I have to say...that ever female out there was totally awesome!  My mom and sister did their first tri Sunday and it was amazing to support them...even if it was so cold!!!

I do have to say though...Amy it sucks you got DQed.  But it sucks even more because i was looking thru the results and someone else had a bike time that was almost as fast as yours (8:38) and it doesn't seem that they were DQed.

Hopefully, they will check into it :-)

Anyway...I am super excited about Monster!  I can't wait for next weekend!!!

I'm doing this. I did it last year so I will be trying to better my time. I also did St Paddy's but I'm not going to say it can't be colder than that, b/c if I do - it WILL be! My daughter did the kids Monster in 2007 and it was 32 degrees.

First tri finished the Monster II in Denton.  Had a blast.  Can't wait for next one in Keller this weekend.  I did have a question/observation I need help with.  On the swim, we were lined up by swim time.  I was passed only once but that was because I ran into a guy doing the backstroke on the second lap.  I was a little shocked.  I then passed probably 5 or 6 other people, then got held up on the last length because two people were swimming side by side, basically blocking the lane.  Is this "normal" in a pool race?  (I can only imaging OWS)  I was really specific about my swim time when I signed up so I didn't look like that idiot.  Also, any advice on navigating a serpentine like course?  Specifically dodging other swimmers and going under the rope.  Thanks

Sadly, most people apparently suck at estimating their swim time.

I think the Keller natatorium is 50m lanes, which means you'll only have one direction per lane.  Since there's no oncoming traffic, if two people are blocking for a long time and you can't swim to the left of them , then swim between them.  They should scooch to the outside to give you room.

I was at the race watching my wife compete and saw the backstorker that you mentioned. It made me laugh to watch it from the deck. Sadly, I think he was doing it b/c he didn't want to get his glasses broken. He wasn't actually doing the backstroke. He was on his back kicking, while holding his prescription glasses. I don't think he was trying to be a jerk. I think as the last post said, people are bad at estimating their swim time.

A tad.  It's still that funny temperature where I can't decide how much to wear on the bike, though.

Fun day out there today.  DA actually did a decent job.  Only complaints were the long line for chips and the fact that it takes them FOREVER to do awards.

Hope everyone had fun!

I really enjoyed this event today!  despite the long chip line they still got started within 10 minutes of their stated time.  Good traffic control on the course too...I was a bit worried about riding on 1709 at church time.  We just beat the clouds and the strong wind too.  Had a pretty good placing for only my second Tri.

See you all in March for the St. Patricks Tri

Did they ever post all the results? I got tired of waiting and keeping my husband waiting on me. I would really love to know my time.

Had a great time at the race today... posted my fastest run time. (Must have been my costume! - White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland)

Unfortunately, I couldn't wait any longer for DA to get to the costume contest. I had a family that was cold and hungry. Oh well... still a great race. The L/S technical shirt, fleece beanie AND a cool medal? Who could ask for more?

Anybody care to post the bike and run distances from their Garmins or other GPS?

I'm about positive the bike was slightly longer than 12 miles, and I wonder if the run wasn't a smidge short.

I had a great time competing in my second Triathlon. I ended up placing second in my clydsdale division and was stoked about that. Can't wait till next year. I was upset that I was not able to stay till the awards but my kids were cold and I didn't want to risk them getting sick. Does anyone know if we got medals or trophy for placing?
thanks

Bike was at least 12.5 according to my Garmin, and that was with forgetting to hit start right away.  I have the run at 3.04, so would agree with your assessment.

This was the first triathlon for me and a friend, and we had a great time .  We both wound up getting stuck in the pool behind a couple trying to swim side by side taking up the whole lane, but I'm guessing that's just part of the game and it added to our "first timer" experience.  The whole thing seemed pretty laid back and everyone was really helpful and nice, so I think we are both hooked!

I didn't stick around for the awards as I missed out by just over a minute. I was surprised when the cold front came in, started getting a bit chilly at the finish line.

I think last year the course was a bit longer than 12 and since they didn't chance it I assume it's the same this year. My cycle computer didn't work so I couldn't tell ya. No clue on the run distance.

Hope everyone had fun!

I went back and rechecked my bike computer.  Between that and the Garmin, I had same distances as you on the bike (12.52) and after I corrected the run track, I had 3.07 miles.

I had my best ever swim time!!! I am so excited because I've really been working on it. Run time was fastest in a tri so far too. Pretty happy with fifth out of 14 in my age group too. I love that course. I'm glad it's close to home and get to race it twice a year. Although I swore I wouldn't do St Paddy's again. Hey, it can't get any colder. Can it???
