i'm not exactly sure how to phrase what i'm asking, so he goes.  does this^^^ mean a 140 lb. rider on a 20 lb bike will be virtually the same as a 120 lb rider on a 40 lb. bike?

Assuming they had the same "frontal area", yes.  However, that's unlikely.  The 140 lb. rider would likely be slower at the same power output because of more drag, not more weight.  IOW, it's the aerodynamics that make the big difference, not the weight.

Right, so if the Felt is more aero, it's the best choice even if it's heavier. This is all so SlowTwitch but without the yelling..

not quite. There is also the concept of rotating weight as well.

Rotational mass is only a consideration during accelerations - while at speed, it is not a factor.

My Scott was way lighter than my Orbea. My Orbea is way faster.

It's hard though when you hold the bikes up... the lighter one feels so much lighter

It is; a friend of mine just got a new Scott road bike with full Red groupset; it is the lightest bike I have ever picked up and my 18lbs road bike felt like a tank in comparison.

Serious bike envy

I know you should go to the wind tunnel with all three bikes and do testing drag with equal power output on each and determine which one you would be fastest on.

I have had farts that weigh more than Ricks Scott...

Yep, Fred, aero all day, everyday, for IM racing.

Of that I have no doubt   His wasn't a project bike and was still crazy light; I'd probably throw your project bike into the ceiling were I to pick it up

WHAT?!!!  i didn't know this.  i knew cycling was about power to weight, etc.  but i didn't realize you could pay an extra k or two for virtually the same effect as dropping a few pounds.  so it seems like losing weight should be a much higher priority for a lot of people (myself included) than it is.   like no more debates about red v. force v. whatever.  shut up and don't eat a cookies...or drink calories in the form of appletinis..... & until then save your $$.

You have a great aero bike already with great light components; as it stands right now your position could be better to reduce you drag and be a bit faster however last year was your 1st year training for IM and your needs where 1) to get ready for the race given your time and fitness and 2) be comofortable on the bike for 6+ hrs. Next year as you continue to improve your cycling fitness it might be a good idea to revise your fit sometime in Nov/Dec and make you a bit more aero since the time you'll spend on the bike should be shorter. That said, yes usually you want to worry about aerodynamics and body weight so lay off the cookies and apple martinis

GPS, you're riding a frickin' DA.  You don't get much better aero equipment than that.  So eat all the cookies you want.

You'll need lighter than Red to catch mine in the weight race.  The stuff that is Red on my bike is the heavier stuff.

oh shush up there, Boston.  i know i do, i'm simply trying to learn in the process of Fred buying a new bike.    but yes, i know we need to scooch the aerobars in, and according to kurt drop my saddle and have shorter cranks or something.  Though i'm pretty sure i just need to ride the bike more regardless....ask Fred, Mr. "I've never biked 14mph"...he's been out there with me.

So if aero trumps for Fred, how do you figure out which bike is the most aero?  Or are those 3 close enough that it's really about which one feels most comfortable?
