Subject: Salt Tabs...

Hi all,
Was wondering what brand of salt tabs you folks have used.  I am a "salter" when I sweat and will likely use salt tabs in my 1/2 IM this summer.  I want to use them in training prior to but before buying I was wondering what brands others had used.

Thanx
Dave

My coach highly recommended Endurolytes Capsules from Hammer. I have a bottle waiting for the weather to get warm enough in MN for me to sweat when I workout, let alone be able to bike without a wind breaker on.

They replace the sodium you lose in your sweat. If you are a heavy sweater or are doing long training rides/ runs or long distance races, you want to replace the electrolytes that you lose. They help keep you from becoming hyponatremic (sp)

Endurolytes... I didn't notice much difference between using them and not using them, but I didn't experiment with them much either.

This is my first season using Endurolytes (or anything) and I'm finding a HUGE difference in my recovery.  Long hot rides last year left me feeling sick for hours.  Now I brick instead!

You need them - you just don't know it yet!  Your comment reminds me of a race report comment from IMAZ - maybe Madcow's.  A female acquaintance of his (also racing) commented on his sweat crust during the race and that she wasn't sweating as much as him - he should be careful to stay hydrated.  She was removed by ambulance later in the race and put in the hospital with severe dehydration.

Hopefully I remembered something close to the real story.  You can check it.

Yeah that was pretty close, she didn't sweat at all during the race and was dehydrated and slightly hypothermic. I have a buddy who took 55 Thermolytes in Kona 2 years ago. 30 on the bike and 25 on the run

I'm going to try these out. I've been running in serious heat with humidity between 60-95% for the past two weeks. Feeling pretty rough for the rest of the day with just water and gatoraide.

Willa little extra table salt in the old cytomax do the trick or is this another expense that I need to tack on?

FWIW, I've only done sprint distance tris. The night before I make sure I take a calcium/magnesium supplement (100% of RDA) and this makes sense to me since I was given cal-mag when I went into pre-term labor a few years ago. The morning of a race I take2-3 endurolytes and one Lava salts tab. I drink a sports drink and water on the way to the race. Sometimes I put water in my aerobottle and sometimes I just put water. There is no science involved; I just guess what I'll feel like drinking on the bike. Regardless, the max I've drunk this year (4 races) is 8 or so oz and I don't bother to drink on the run.

As temps get warmer and the distances get greater, I'm going to experiment with gels. As far as table salt being okay, what do I know? It is probably just fine. And it probably doesn't matter all that much for sprints.

I use them with water and gel (hammergel). Gel for energy, endurolytes for electrolyte replacement/proper hydration.

Wanted to resurrect this post as I have yet to use salt tabs but just ordered some (Endurolytes) for an OLY in a couple weeks. I’ll give them a shot in training these couple weeks as I don’t want to take them in the race for the first time.

Just wondering when you start taking them: before the swim; on the bike; on the run; in the T-Areas? How do you know how many to take and when? If it’s not that hot and you take them anyway, is there a risk of taking too many—not that I plan on taking 55.

Thanks for any other info you can provide.

When this thread began I said I hadn't noticed much difference between using and not using the ENdurolytes, but I need to amend that!  Now that I've used them more...incl at Spirit of Racine in 115 deg heat index...I won't go without them if it's warm.  I would NOT have finished that race without them.

I use 1 or 2 depending on the heat, beginning just before my swim ( or at the beginning of my workout)and at 1 hour intervals after that.  For the bike I cut corners off of plastic baggies, put 2 in each, and taped them to my aerobars...worked like a charm.

I use Carbo-Pro mixed with water which has zero electrolytes so I can't comment on using them with sports drinks.

As always, try them in training before you try them on race day....

EDIT:  I only use 1 or 2 because I'm relatively small...I would think that like anything else you would base the number of caps you use on your weight...

I've started experimenting with Endurolytes on my long rides.  Last week on another forum, a post about 1/2 IM nutrition suggested:

Consume about 600 mg of sodium (1 gram of salt) per 150 pounds per hour on the bike and run. Getting too much salt is not a problem unless carried to excess. Remember to include sodium from all sources.

For me, this is roughly 750mg of sodium/hr.  With sports drinks & gels, I'm probably at 350-450 so 3-4 tabs/hr is what I'm targeting (each tab has 100mg).

I found these http://www.cranksports.com they have a sports drink and gel that have electrolytes in them.  A LOT of electrolytes.  I've pretty much switched over to these products as they seem to work better for me, plus a couple of Endurolytes as needed.

Of course, they may be too much for you, I am Human-Salt-Lick while working out.

I used to get chills, nausea, stomach cramps, etc - and now no problems, so I swear by the stuff.

Rob, It really depends on the heat.  I have begun taking 2 prior to exercise and then 1 every 30 minutes if it is hot out, (Tupper I was taking one on the 1/2 hour and 2 on the hour).  I am a heavy sweater and salter (i.e. my shorts tend to have white salt marks on them after long runs and rides) so, like you are planning to do, try them in training and make sure to take w/ a large drink of water / drink.

If you have ever seen the M&M minis plastic containers they make a great container to hold the endurlytes in, you can fit a mess in there and it has a pop top for easy opening and closing.

Adios

I actually use a Tic-Tac container and my Endurolytes fit perfectly inside. The M&M Mini container is a great idea I may steal.

If I am exercising more than an hour, I will take one before I begin. I then take two at the top of every hour. I find this is enough and makes me really hungry after my workouts in the heat. I never workout outside in heat without them after running my second marathon with them -- they are a lifesaver.

As for a schedule, I will take about an hour before the swim, a couple on the hour and so on until Ifinish my race. Nodoby has mentioned, but they also claim to keep cramps away, especially in heat. I have found that in my experience, this is true.
