Seriously Z5 for start, Z4 for bulk of race, back to Z5 for finish.

Good luck & it ain't my fault if you:
a) blow up and don't finish
b) blow chunk at the finish

I do all of my races, regardless of distance, in Z3.  I am the most frail 205 pounder.

And HR monitors should be outlawed in 5 and 10k events.  Because if you are worrying about where your HR is, then you are not going hard enough.

5Ks should hurt...10Ks too, but not as much as a 5K.

as for wearing the HR monitor, i like to analyze the data afterwards, so I wear mine.

Yeah, I was not worrying about it during, but its nice to look at the data after to try to figure out if you DID go all out.

I felt like I went all out, but based on some HR training I've done, I think I had some extra juice I could have given (certainly didn't feel like that through the finish line).

The first 5K I did I was at 182 after about a minute or so, was up around 188 after a half mile, held there for most of the race and pushed up to a max of 198 sprinting at the finish--and my last mile was the fastest split.  My LT at the time was 176.  There's just no answer to this for a 5K, for a short race like this I always follow the old adage 'Go hard or go home!'  I would say the same thing about a 10K but I think that depends a bit more on your fitness level, but for a 5K just redline it the whole way and force yourself to finish before you puke or pass out.

Reviewing the data made me realize that I could go harder than I thought I could, and the HRM file quantified that for me.

just because the doc didn't race with one doesn't mean it was useless.  I read his post as saying based off his HR monitor during training, he knew he could HTFU, which he did and got a PR.

Knowing your HR doesn't make you HTFU.  HTFU makes you HTFU.

Your mind doesn't give a sh-t if you are going 185 or 195 bpm.  All it knows is "Damn this is hard and I want to slow down!"  It is up to you to push it, not some number on a piece of plastic and electrodes.  That is the difference between the people who run PR's and successful 5/10k efforts.  NOT because they have a grasp on what their training HR zones are.

Again, HR should not even be in the same paragraph as 5/10k pacing.

agreed 100%.

no reason at all except for data acqusition to where a HRM during a 5k, 10k, sprint, or oly, IMO.

I like them for longer races because I tend to go too hard, so it keeps me in check.


As for HTFU, this is what I do during a race...

I play a game during the event and I ask myself over and over, "can I go harder than this?  What if my life depended on it, could I go faster?  What if my family's life depended on it, could I go faster?"  If I say "yes" then I'm not going fast enough.
