evillarroel - 2010-01-17 7:32 AM With the event 13 weeks away, how's everybody putting in the long rides? Weather hasn't been friendly here in Dallas lately. Does anybody have ideas to make a trainer enjoyable for three hours?, I feel like a squirrel on that thing.

I have a subscription to Netflix and I stream movies on my laptop in front of the trainer. Usually an action movie and standing up every 10 mins makes the trainer session go by a tad bit quicker....still not as good as getting outside!

Hi IM NO 70.3 folks! I'm not doing the race this year, but I did it last year (it's first year). Here's a link to anything labeled with "IM NO 2009" on my blog, and the top couple of posts are my race report and photos. Maybe this can help:

http://iwannagetphysical.blogspot.com/search/label/IM%2070.3%20NO%2...

Good luck everyone!!!

Think i'm going to be out. Smacked in the face at the first of the year with some expenses I wasn't planning on, and don't think i'm going to make it to this event. Love, New Orleans and would love to see it! Good luck to all.

Would love to meet Macca! Those are awesome pics, I almost forgot what the sun even did to you as I don't think I've seen it in months. Unbelievable, and thanks for the pics.

I'm in for the second year.  I loved this race last year.  One of the best finish line venues I've ever seen.  The course is flat and fast.  Great post race party also.

I did it last year. (I also got made fun of in a race report by AbbieR) Who would ever imagine the guy that you made fun of is also a BT'er.   It's ok though, she said sorry ;-)

It was my first tri and I enjoyed it. I was in the earlier waves and they still had water when I went through the stations. Some friends of mine weren't so lucky and won't be competing this year. They said they wanted to make sure the bugs got worked out before they did it again.

I work in downtown New Orleans. Before I worked down town full time I used to come for business occasionally. When I did I stayed at the Drury inn.  The rooms are very nice. It's about 2 blocks from Bourbon street and they have a small parking lot for your car on site.  Since it's a newer hotel it usually isn't booked up and last time I stayed the rooms were about 110 a night. This hotel is still within walking distance to the riverside hilton for packet pickup. (less than a mile I think, I have walked near it for lunch) It's about a 12 minute walk from the finish area too I think. I parked in a parking garage across the street from the Drury when I did it last year.

See you in April!

I'm still up in the air if i'm going to make this but have been to New Orleans a few times now and honestly love it. Usually stay at a hotel off O'keefe and Poydras (O'keefe Plaza), how far away is that from the transition area?

Thomas the transition area is literally on the other side of town from the hotel you want to stay at. Coincidently the hotel that you named is across the street from the hotel I suggested.

I am familiar with the area, my parking garage is on O'keefe.

Joke is on me! Tri Bike Transport is NOT servicing this race anymore. Bummer...was told "the race director decided that there would be a potential conflict of interest with their on-site, partner bike shop that they had previously contracted with."

How is everyone else getting their bike down there?

Yes, this news is very disappointing. The LBS handling the out of town bikes is charging $175 to unbox, put together, then rebox the bikes. Shipping is not included. Im not sure, but I believe you have to pick up the bike at the shop. I guess Ill fly with mine.

Actually, according to the local bike shop who is handling the shipping IS dropping off and picking up bikes @ transition.

"We will deliver your bike at bike check in on Saturday, April 17. We will have a booth there and you will have an opportunity to test ride your bike before checking it in. If you need your bike before that please contact us to make special arrangements."

"After the event we will pick up your bike at transition. Please plan on checking in with us at transition after the event. If you would prefer to take your bike you will need to make arrangements to get it back to us later."

http://www.bicycleworldla.com/bicycleworldla/NOLATri.html

I am going ahead with this plan. As long is it doesn't cost more than $175 to ship my bike to and from, this deal will actually come out to be the same as Tri Bike Transport for me. Only downside is that the bike will need to be broken down and rebuilt X2. I like my fit! I am breaking out the sharpie marker and marking angles and seat positions.

Yep! You are right! Should have read closer!  Seams like $175 is a little steep to tighten a stem and put a seat on.  Oh well, guess I will anty up too. I trust UPS more than an ariline to handle my bike.

The news of Tribike Transport pulling out makes me seriously want to rethink this race. I had a very bad experience with the official bike shipper last year. You have to send the bike quite a bit in advance and it took almost three weeks for me to get it back. At one point they didn't even know where it was and had no record of it in their system. It was really expensive and being without a bike for 4.5 weeks while IM training was just not good. Maybe they have sharpened up their act this year, but I have my doubts. What a bummer!

Uh oh
Now you've got be worried LazyMarathoner.  I have been back and forth about how to get my bike down there (tribike transport was never an option due to it being no where near me! but that would have been my preference if it was).
I have booked with the "official" people but I am renting a bike case from my local bike shop.  If I don't get my bike back for 3 weeks that will be very expensive for me, not to mention the IM training I should be doing.
My alternative was to fly with it but I am flying delta and they want $175 each way! plus I'm worried about it being thrown around

or not making it on time. that is my biggest worry with flying to a race.

I already own a bike case, and I have decided to ship it to my hotel and put it together myself ( i am only taking out the seat post and detaching the cockpit @ the stem). that is super simple to do and if I have to do a taxi up to transition with the bike and back, all together it should come out (hopefully!) a LOT cheaper than $175 + shipping costs. The $175 I see is the convenience of them getting the bike to transition and shipping it back for you. I can't risk being without my tri bike for 4 weeks since I have another HIM 6 weeks later.

Its really too bad things didn't work out with Tri Bike Transport and this race. From what everyone has told me, Tri Bike Transport is a dream of convenience.

This may be a silly question, but I don't see it mentioned anywhere on the site.  Will there be places for athletes to shower and change after the race?  Or should I book my hotel stay through Sun night?  I'd like to save the extra cash, but I will for sure need a shower before I get in my car and travel 5 hours back to Birmingham.

Try to extend your check-out if you can! I had to drive 6 hours after Rhode Island 70.3 last year after a "sink shower" and clothing change in the hotel bathroom and felt utterly miserable. If it's not a super busy time at the hotel and they know you're racing they will usually give you just enough time to shower and do a late check-out. You could always do that first, then schlep out to transition, grab your gear/bike and get on the road.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to freak anyone out but it was a very unpleasant experience and I swore after the race I'd never work with them again. I had to ship it something like 10 days prior and I didn't get it back for over two weeks after. They told me they were overwhelmed by all the bikes they had to deal with. Another watch out is that one of the guys I went to retrieve my bike with searched and search and his wasn't there. They had "forgotten" it at the shop and had to go find it. He had to wait over two hours and this was late in the afternoon the day before the race. Stress no one needs.

I'm with Jon on taking it apart and putting it together myself. Though I might bring it on the plane if I can't ship it in a hard case. UPS manhandles bikes as well so I almost trust the airline more. This is such a letdown. I'm emailing the RD to let him know what a strike this is against the race.

Since I travel about two to three weeks out of every month throughout most of the states west of the Mississippi, I purchased a travel case and ship it using FEDEX Ground.  It normally takes a maximum 4 days to get to my location and it is in perfect condition.  I also put it together myself and at times rent a car to get to/from a race site pending how close my hotel is.  Normal cost range is between $65 - $95 one way.  Southwest airlines is the cheapest for traveling with my bike I have found but I still use FEDEX Ground.

No, I don't work for them but if you ship via UPS and it is NOT in a BROWN Box, they charge extra!  Not kidding!  Good luck and looking forward to the race!!  Happy Training
