One of my buddies is getting ready to do a fixie project, and came across this while he was wandering around on the Internet. I checked the IM website to confirm that he was a finisher this year.

ETA: confirmed the number on the bike as well.

No way!  He's an animal!  I haven't even done my first tri yet and I know this would have to be pretty crazy.  I wonder what his reasoning was.  He certainly was turning some heads when they saw him roll in with that baby!

i did a mountain bike race a couple of years ago and the 1st place guy was on a fixie. . this wasn't an 'easy' trail either - 14.5 miles, 2000+ elevation gain, lots of single track. . pretty crazy!

I guess it'd be a light bike anyway... I'm really surprised there wasn't more about this...

PennState - 2009-11-03 1:25 PM I guess it's a way to be 'different' than everybody else.

If putting a 1080 Zipp on the front of a Schwinn isn't different enough.

just did a little reading about this guy.  He's done over 40 Ironmans!  And he apparently uses Kona as a 'training run' for the Ultraman World Championships in November.

Wonder what gear ratio he's running. That's hard core and kinda nutso, but rad that he raced kona on a $500 frame. As if the uphill were bad enough, that downhill would be a killer spin. Keyyyyyrazzzy.

I volunteered last month for the bike course during the Westchester Tri in NY (Oly distance) and saw 2 guys flying on fixies and they were up front in the pack. I got to hand it to them, Westchester Oly is hilly. I couldn’t imagine doing it in Kona. I almost did NJ State oly on my fixie, but I got my bike back from the shop just in time, Maybe next season.fixie

Am I the only one that doesn't understand the point of a fixie in any situation?

The Zipp is definitely what caught my eye as well! Like a spoiler on a golf car.

I just started a new thread about this - I contacted this guy, and he did Kona in 1996 on a 61 pound crusier!! He's nuts!

Every four years there's a race/ride in France called Paris-Brest-Paris where you have 90 hrs. total time to go 763 miles with 32,000 feet of climbing.  There's always dozens (if not hundreds) of fixie riders that cover the course in that timeframe (some do it in 60-70 hrs.).

I did the course in 88 hrs. in 2007 but not on a fixie.  I have done several centuries on fixies, though.

Not to state that Kona on a fixie is no small accomplishment, by any means.  It's pretty hardcore, but doing PBP on one is pretty insane.

Maybe. Fixies are a must at the velodrome.

I'm thinking of riding a fixing in a few (flat) TTs this year. I know plenty who have done it.
