Riding fixie is unlike riding a bike in many ways. You are more connected to the road, you have better control of your bike, the thing is light is all get up, it's more fun than a geared bike...I could go on for days.

I'm planning on doing IMWI on a fixie within the next 5 years. My current gear ratio is 48/14, so it's certainly not happening on that, but it's certainly doable and yes, different. I mean, why the hell would anyone do an IM? It's just another way to challenge yourself.

That's pretty hardcore.  I know I couldn't do it.

Finishing an IM on a fixie must be tough, but Kona isn't the toughest bike course by a long shot.

Until you have tried it you might not understand.  Those of us who do, don't understand why not a fixie in any situation.

The only one I agree with is a Fixie in the city w/o brakes - that is just plain stupid (IMHO).

Outside of that fixies are a great way to ride the bike and certainly do not hinder performance and might even improve it.

It must just be one of those "not for me" sorta things because I have ridden a fixie and didn't like it at all. Not having brakes and not being able to not stop pedaling just made me really nervous and not want to go as fast as I could have. The guy who owned the fixie admitted to me that he didn't like it either... I'd forgotten about the track bikes, that would certainly be interesting to try...

I have a friend who did IM Canada on a fixie. I think he used a 46x18. He's done Florida on a fixie as well, but that's an ideal course for one.

I've done some pretty hilly centuries on mine, but i don't see myself ever doing an IM on one.

Riding a fixie without a brake (unless you're in the velo) is beyond stupid. A lot of my friends ride brakeless, helmetless, and without lights at night. I tell them on a regular basis how stupid they are, because it is nothing less than that.

ultrahip_00 - 2009-11-03 5:23 PM i did a mountain bike race a couple of years ago and the 1st place guy was on a fixie. . this wasn't an 'easy' trail either - 14.5 miles, 2000+ elevation gain, lots of single track. . pretty crazy!

lol.. someone took his fixie on a group ride a few weeks back..  let's say though his night didn't end up as well.. His chain literally blew up in like 4 places so he had to end up walking back to the parking lot.  (this is on MTB trails)

Very cool.

I just picked up a single-speed bicycle for when I want to tool around on the bike path or something. I was going to get the Bianchi Pista with the flip-flop rear hub, but it was a little too 'track' for me. I wound up finding a Trek District... belt drive, pretty slick. I'm looking forward to taking it out for a blast.

Incidentally, my Grandfather used to track race (in a velodrome). He was an Italian soccer player and cyclist... the most ridiculous legs you've ever seen, even when he was in his 70's.
