jashac - 2010-10-08 12:05 PMToday:
Beach temperature hights 81 to 86,
Water temperature 75 degrees
surf height 1 foot or less.

I love the water at PCB.
website for current water temp:  http://www.weather.gov/view/validProds.php?prod=SRF&node=KTAE

What's the usual water temp on race day? I just bought a full sleeve assuming it would be in the 60's. If it's 70 or above I might wear the sleeveless.

If you have it, and you feel comfortable in it, wear the sleeves.  The water temps won't be so warm that you'll overheat from weaing sleeves, and as long as your somewhat comfortable, its unquestionably faster.

Speaking of the water at PCB, I just (finally) uploaded some of my pictures from IMFL 08.
Here's one of the sparkling clear water:

Doesn't that make you want to go swimming?

the key is to consume enough calories to keep you going for all 140.3   140.6  miles without upseting your stomach or needing 10+ restroom breaks.

fixed that for you!    Would hate to see someone stop short 3/10 of a mile from the finish

Regarding nutrition, it's still the one discipline I need to polish up. I have the opportunity to meet with a nutritionist who is also an Iron(wo)man. But she's pricey at $120/hr... hesitant, but thinking this would be money well spent if she can set me up with a customized nutrition plan for the big day. So maybe in this case, there is a dollar sign on a piece of mind..?

I'm discovering that if I take care of myself, and fuel properly, my body will respond positively and will adapt to get me to the finish line.

I myself WOULD NOT waste the money to have someone else tell me what I like.
what have you been eating/drinking on your long run and bike workouts?
you don't want to be trying anything new or drastic, but you should know by now which types of nutrition don't upset your stomach and you should know what flavors you like.
and you should be familiar with what is provided on the course.

for me i've found my favorite flavor of gel (Hammer Apple Cinammon), favorite flavor of Clif Shot Blocks (Strawberry) and my favorite drink mix (Accelerade Fruit Punch).  i also realize that at IM FL they offer Lemon Lime Ironman Perform drinks (tastes somewhat like yellow gatorade perform).

so i drink a mix of plain ice water, accelerade, and the course supplied Perform during the bike.
i generally consume a bit more calories in Hammer Gel than in shot blocks but i mix them up depending on how i feel.
i am a HEAVY sweater so i also take salt tab pills throughout the bike and run portion.

the big question is how many calories to ingest per hour. which will differ a bit person to person, but i plan to take in about 350/hr on the bike and 150/hr on the run.

the key is to consume enough calories to keep you going for all 140.3 miles without upseting your stomach or needing 10+ restroom breaks.

back to the nutrionist thing: the lady might be able to recommend you all sorts of "great" products/advice and tell you what she used and what works for "all" her clients but who knows if it'll work for YOU? not saying that seeing a nutritionist would be a complete waste, i'm sure she could help you decide on how many calories to consume per hour, how much salt to consume, etc.  but i would not want someone trying to convince me to change up the nutrition plan i've been using all year long.

cool, thanks for the reply! Yeah, that's why I'm hesitant. I definitely know what works for me and what doesn't. I know I need some solid food during the bike - I can't deal with gels or goo. So cliff bars and larabars are working for me. I drink Accelerade, but will need to start getting used to the Ironman perform also. Unless I pack the Accelerade powder in baggies with me and mix my own bottles en-route. I did some planning and figured 250 cal/hr during the bike, and was figuring less for the run, and not relying heavily on solids while running. But I will need to do more planning for nutrition during the run. I think the 150 cal/hr would work for me too.

I was thinking the benefit from working with the nutritionist would be to have a definite plan for both bike and run, using the nutrition that works for me or what would be available on the course. Sounds like right now I just need to do more homework! Smile

regarding nutrition on the bike, A hint I found and used last time:

mix a bottle of nutrition and leave it in your special needs bag.  To keep it cold get one of those large padded (bubble-wrap) envelopes.

I tried it and it worked very well.  It was good to have cold nutrition again at ~ 70 miles.

Thanks Jen, that's all I needed.

In 08 lots of people saw dolphins.  I didn't see any, just lots of people in wetsuits.

I was mostly kidding.  But in reality I have a completely irrational fear of sharks.  Sometimes I like that I can see...if I can't see them I know they aren't there.  But at the same time I would often rather not see anything...if it's murky then I don't see all the other stuff that will scare me!

my LBS is hooking me up with a set of Zipp 808's for the race.  They'll look a little funny on my entry level bike, but hey...it's IM right?  Gotta do what you gotta do.  Everyones numbers are awesome.  Mine aren't what I'd like them to be, but between work and a 1yr old, training has been the first thing to be compromised.  The nerves are starting to set in pretty good.  Some days are better than others.  This week didn't help much...I was out of town the first 4 days of the week and wasn't able to work in anything at all.  Got a quick run in last night and felt pretty sluggish.  Hopefully i can work out those kinks this weekend.  Everyone stay safe out there.

Sweet!

Don't worry about the fancy-pants wheels on your entry level bike.  I ride a Mercier Cycles Aero TT on Mavic Cosmic Carbones.  I don't worry about how it looks.  I figure I gain more speed from the race wheels than I would if I spent the same money on a higher-end frame.

Checked out the course changes in earnest last night. HUGE changes. Based on having doen teh course 3 times take it FWIW.  I am slow but I'm smart so there it is.  I qualify this as a lot of people dismiss what i have to say because I can't KQ.

The good
1-eliminates camp flowers road which you could loose a tooth on.
2-Takes us off a very busy highway ( 231 I think.  I suspect this may be the root of the course change)
3-Will most likely be more favorable wind

The Bad
1-Route 20 has the majority of the hills on the course and we will ride them twice now (I feel my dream of a sub 6 hour bike slipping away)
2-they took us back down a newly paved smooth as glass road which was heavenaly and that is off the course now

RE: wind patterns all three years I did the course I expereinced
1-GOing out front beach road (And coming back)  be careful.  THe wind whips off the beach and can take you bike out from under you esp if you are riding a disc.  You can catch a tailwind or head wind but the wind changes suddenly and also as tehre are lots of condos along the beach they act like wind tunnels either between or under teh bulidings.
2-Bascially head wind the first 50 miles.  the tail wind down 231 (Which has been eliminated) a littll more head wind here and there.
3-Looks like with the course change that there will be turns to keep us out of consistent sustained headwinds.
4-Anything is possible.

FYI looks like they are maintain the run course as it was last year with a loop thru the state park rather than an out and back.  It was PTICH BLACK back there for those of you who will be joining me in the BOP after dark.  I HIGHLY suggest getting a light for your hat or SOMETHING because being back there with nothing but a glow stick for light was not good.

I thought the course was almost all flat?  When you say "hills", are they HILLS, or are they little like an overpass?

Before I did Musselman this year, I kept hearing people talk about hills on the bike.  During the race, I kept waiting for them, but they never came, other than 1 that was probably only .25-.5 mi long, and not very steep.  I couldn't believe how flat the course was.

ETA: Nevermind.  I missed the other posts about the hills on the last page.  It still sounds much flatter than what I'm used to riding on.

Hi Sue, thanks for the update, can you define hills? I enjoy hills (no choice) but was expecting to be cycling "billiard table" flat - just changed to an 11-21 cassette - will I need something more?

Also, anyone know at what mile the special needs will be now?

Finally, is there google map of the bike & run courses anywhere?

Apologies for my laziness in not researching these things for myself.

If you routinely ride hills you will be fine.  I actualy do ride where its pancake (or billiard) flat.  Its not that.  Some rollers that a flatlander can handle but  not pnacake flat.  Jen will not doubt give us a detailed report after the weekend

Have a great weekend of training everyone!

I have my first race rehearsal Sunday with either 5 hour or 100 mile bike increasing my watts slightly thru ride and 40' run. Discussing with my coach how long/how far I'm going Sunday.

Rode 4.25 hours/20' run today..felt good..helped out fellow biker with flat and not tubes and didn't know how to change a tube.

Got my final shipment of possible tri clothes for IMFL. Leaning towards Skins compression tri shorts comfy but a bit goofy looking. I have a lot of things to send back.

95 miles on the bike today followed by a 1:15 run.  I'm still not sure how I'm going to do a marathon, although the swim and bike are ready.

By my count (assuming that I can count), four weeks from today we'll be doing our thing in Florida!

Looking forward to meeting you-all.

100 mile ride today followed by a 1 hour run (with some walking in there).  2:45 run in the morning.  I'm really hoping the route for Florida has good roads.  I am so tired of riding on horrible country roads.  In the organized century ride I did this morning there was even a 1 mile stretch of gravel road we had to ride through.  Since I didn't want to risk going down and getting injured, I did about 6mph on that part.  Fun times.  NOT.  I did, however, rent races wheels again today and am going to check into getting them for Florida.  I could tell the difference on the few smooth roads we did have today.

Enjoying watching IM Kona broadcast!  Exciting pro's race for sure.

After riding 112 on Sunday, I did a pretty measly 64 today! ha!  But, that got me up to almost 230 miles for the week!  Woo hoooo!!!  My biggest week cycling ever.

I'm out for a 2:45 run in the morning.  Looking forward to it.

I know that I won't be able to run all 26.2.  Most of us mere mortals cannot run 100% of the IM marathon.  Just resign yourself to the fact there will be some walking.  I'd like to run at least 90% of it. I'm hoping to run the first 10 miles, then mix in 20/2 (20 min run/2 min walk) until I cross that finish line.
