My goal is about 55 pounds. On January 1 of this year I was 254.  Today I'm 249.  I want to be under 200 by the end of the year (if not sooner).  My highest point was a little over 270 early last year.  I got down to 240 during the summer, but over the winter let it slip some.

I'm a vegan, but I don't know how much that contributes really.  I'm vegan for ethical reasons so I never really looked at it as a "diet".  I'm doing it by exercising at least 30 minutes every day, and doing 1.5-2 hour workouts on the weekends and by not eating junk.  Staying away from all the processed stuff I can, and eliminating HFCS completely.

I'm not shooting for losing a ton of weight real quick.  I'm changing the way I do things, so by eating better and exercising more, the weight will take care of itself.

Wow, 140 in 16 Months is incredible!  Congratulations!

So besides the eating right part did you include exercise as part of this?  I am assuming by eating right you mean a Low-Cal diet, what was your daily caloric intake budget?

Again, congrats.

I was doing 1250 Calorie intake and I have mainly been running my butt off. I do weights twice a week to keep toned. It's been HARD work. I workout 5 days a week for atleast an hour. But it's SOOOO worth it.

Thanks for the info and congrats again.  I am down about 115 now with about 10 to go still.  Seem to have got stuck at 175 +/- 2 since early Nov and trying to figure out a way to jump start it again.  Currently doing about 1800 calories per day with a very low carb intake mostly from vegetables and some fruits.

Just saw your full size photo's on BT Girls 2010...again, wow! Good luck on your first Tri coming up and look forward to seeing you post on the boards.

Currently holding at 75 lbs lost using Weight Watchers and incorporating Clean Eating.  I'd actually hit 95 lbs lost for one glorious week, and have since put back on 20 lbs (ugh)...but I'm still holding on to that 75 lbs gone.

Cool to see several of you that have had some success.  Congrats on dropping 75 and you can get back to 95 pretty quickly I am sure.  I know how it goes though, stop paying attention for just a few days and that turns into weeks and in my case it turned into years and 100+ pounds.

I did WeightWatchers also. I consistently lost 2 pounds a week for a total of 45 pounds. I still go, generally once a month, for a free weigh in as a Lifetimer. I think their program is great for people who need a lifestyle change and who never considered portion control or balanced meals with real food. I also think they've inproved in recent years with telling people they need to eat their daily points in real, healthy food choices and they only have 5 points a day for treats. They now really push the idea of their good health guidelines - which is basically eating your vegetables, whole grains, daily vitamin, drinking water, etc. I recall meetings where the entire dicsussion was around zero nutritional value foods and how to substitute them for every meal.

I started at 388 in August of 2006. I'm now at 321. I'd yo-yo'd slightly over the past 10 months (move to boston from Columbus, new job, wedding, etc.) getting as high as 340, but got serious again at the beginning of the year, because I'm training for Timberman 70.3.

I've lost 16 pounds since 1/1. I'm working out more, and eating less, and eating mostly healthier. I'm following weight watchers points, just not going to meetings.

I've been blogging about the process now that I'm heavily in training at http://www.becomingtimberman.comĀ

I have tried everything. Low-carb, Atkins, SouthBeach, low-fat, this-that diet and everything in between. I have come to one conclusion, providing there is not some medical condition, people are overweight because they too much food.

Over the last year I have lost 80 lbs.........60 lbs since June when I became a vegetarian.  I went vegetarian not for ethical or political reasons, but I wanted to decrease my saturated fats and I'm just an all or nothing person. It was easier for me to eliminate all meat then it was picking and choosing which meats are healthier.

Here's the key I always, I mean always, shoot for 2000 calories a day. At first I logged the food I ate. Now I have a gotten good at "eyeballing" calories and do not log food. I run 4x week, cycle 2x week and swim 2-3 days a week. I'm upping my miles for an upcoming 1/2 mary. That will be my challenge. Keeping my hunger under control.

I still have days when I blow it. When I do I just start over the next day. Just like we all do with training. I'm still fat, thought not as fat. I am convinced, providing there is not some medical condition (which is rare), we are the reason we are overweight. When we consume more calories than we burn we gain weight. When we consume less calories than we burn we lose weight.

This is just my personal observation. Since I have been on BT I have seen "clydesdale" triathletes that have done sprints, oly, him and IM's. Wow, I can only dream. However, I wonder if the training that it takes to get ready or those distances actully hinder weight loss. If there is a time when training needs to be scaled back in order to reduce calories to encourage weight loss.

wird.

i posted about it in COJ maybe a week ago, i lost over  a hundred pounds the past 3 years, under 200 lbs for the first time in 10 years.  5 year vegan.  diets never work, deciding to live a healthy lifestyle always works.  its a choice.

I've lost a little over 65 in the last 16 months.  Went from 285 to 219 this morning.

I've read about and tried several of the fad diets and the one that works best is always going to be eat less and move more.  No matter how you slice it, weight loss is mostly about calories in vs. calories out.  Obviously there are a lot of other key factors to maximize results and stay the course, but it starts with a calorie deficit.  If you only burn no more than what you consume, you will have little success in losing.

I have lost 53 pounds of fat and gained 10 lbs of muscle for a net loss of 43 lbs. Using the advice from my coach, who is also a nutritionist, my diet pretty much followed several key steps:
- Breakfast of oats or quinoa with a banana and some almond butter
- Snack of a low glycemic piece of fruit (grapefruit) around 3 hours later
- Lunch of whole wheat wrap with avocado and any veggies I want
- Snack 3 hours later of some walnuts and a piece of dark chocolate
- Dinner of a large salad with veggies and 8 oz. of meat

I am 6'5" and was at 263 lbs when I started training last May 1, 2009. Since then, I have completed several 70.3's and olympic distance tris. One key aspect of my training has been to consume only the necessary calories during intense training sessions. If I had to have a cheat meal or was going to consume some large amounts of sugars etc., I only did it within 15 minutes after a hard workout because that is when your body will actually use those sugars.

Not a ton of advice, but some good things to consider with all the other comments. I originally started triathlon, with a goal of the IM, to lose weight. However, I am now starting to make it a part of my life and enjoy the competition.

Not yet, but as of yesterday...

weighed in at 230 @18.6% BF from 248 @ 25.6 %BF on 1/1/2010. That over 20 lbs of butter lost in 6 week.

Oh, and my methods,
Moderation in everything, including moderation.

After that, just doing everything that I claimed that I was doing last yeear, but a little bit more disciplined.

That and the $100 bet where the winner who drops bodyfat the most wins a grand.

I lost 80 (235-155) pounds six years ago through mainly diet.  Nothing special just eating less.  I had a couple ups and downs thorugh the years following and have now stabilized at around 160 pounds for the past 2 years.  I'll float a little +/- 3 lbs depending on where I am in training.  I'm right at 14% BF.  Wouldn't mind getting to about 12% but we'll see about that.

^2nd to what batlou said! I lost 35 lbs from Sept. 2004 to January 2005. At the time I was not working out and had not started tri's. I always tell people "read the Atkins book" and don't listen to your friend who stays on blogs and never gets out of the chair. Atkins is very heavy on vegetables, moderation and exercise. I followed it and it worked like a charm.

I have to say I do ingest more carbs in the sugar form when training but you use them up!

This probably isn't going to make you happy, and a lot of athletes would think I am crazy, but I have lost 35 pounds since I have been vegan (and am still loosing). I feel more energetic, light, and feel better than I have ever felt in my life. I have PLENTY of energy for workouts and my muscles are toning nicely. You HAVE to make sure to get the protein, B12, and iron. Being vegan works best for people who have the time to cook and know enough about nutrition to stay healthy. I even know of a professional ironman triathlete, Brendan Brazier, who is vegan. Even weight-lifters today are acknowledging that a plant-based diet is more effective in building muscle than stuffing yourself full of protein and meat.HOWEVER, I'm sure you would have the same/similar effect if you concentrated on eating all foods from the eath; organic, healthy, lots of veggies and fruits. If you eat foods that don't make you feel guilty, than you are probably on the right track. A great book to read that IS NOT geared towards vegetarians but overall healthy eating is the Omnivore's Dilemma.

32 since January 4th. From 267 to 235. I still have 25-30 to go. Alton Browns weight loss show was on January 4th. I watched it from the treadmill.

I bought into the nutrient dense food idea. I cut out white flour, white rice, sugar, processed meats, and "bad" fats.

I cut back on potatoes, red meat, eggs, and I use non fat cheese.

I eat a ton more veg, salads with fat free or light dressings (you can add some extra vinegar to cut the dressing some).

And I started training again.

Down 114 pounds in about 8 months.  Just made some reasonable changes with food, eating about 1500-1800 calories a day, exercise like a madman, and listen to my body.
