I have never done a stand alone 5k, but I did a 5.2 mile run with an avg of 6.56 min miles (so I am sure I could do it in 20).  I did a marathon this weekend in 3:23:50 at 7:47 pace

Wow!  With every new post to this thread, I just keep getting more and more impressed with these 5k times.  I seriously must be doing something wrong, because at my current weight (which is 152-155lbs)...I can barely maintain a 10-minute mile pace...and that's really pushing it for me.  And I run an average of 5-6x a week, for 3-4.5 miles per run.  I'm having a hard time understanding why I am SO slow, when I read about folks on here that are 100+ lbs heavier than me clocking times in the mid to low 20's for a 5k.  I realize that performance is not entirely based on the weight of a person, but I would think at some point...weight would start to have an impact on finishing times, no?  I know my form could probably benefit from some improvement, so I'm certain that is one thing affecting my run times.  But sometimes I feel so discouraged and frustrated with the lack of progress I'm making with running.  Lately, it almost feels pointless to keep doing it if I'm never going to be able to run faster or longer.  <sigh>   Sorry for whining.

Linda,
Have you tried speed work at all?  (intervals, tempo runs, fartleks, hill training).  The only way to race faster is to practice faster.  Also, you could be working too hard in your daily runs and not letting your body recover.  i know this sounds silly to you right now, but it is the premise of heart rate training.  you let your body recover between hard workouts so that you can go really hard on your hard days.  On my regular training runs, I'm around 11 minutes per mile, but my 5K PR is sub 8 mpm (10K is about 8:30 and half is about 9:00).

Yes, I try to get in at least 1-2 interval runs per week.  But here lies my problem - during these interval runs, I will alternate between a slower pace (5.6 - 5.8 mph) and a faster pace (6.5 - 7.0mph)...but I can barely hang on at the faster pace for more than 1 minute.  I cannot even fathom going any faster than 7.0 mph right now...there is just no way I could do it.  And I can only do this interval work for about 15 minutes...once I hit that mark, my legs are shot and I have to slow down to a consistent pace for the remainder of my run.  I've been stuck at this point for quite a long while now, with no progress in sight.  It's rather depressing, if I do say so myself...and it has made me sort of "dread" running at the moment (which obviously doesn't make it any easier).

I am no expert, but maybe run slower that you are during your intervals to aide in more recovery.  That way instead of running med-fast to fast you are running slow to fast.

Do not give up.

Another thought, instead of running 5-6 times at week in the 3-4.5 mile range, drop a run or so and make your long run longer (at your easy pace)

I agree that your rest intervals should be a little slower.  I do them at 5.0-5.4 and do my intervals at 7.5 (right now).  I would also try some tempo runs, warm up at 5.6, run at 6.4 or 6.5 for 10 minutes, and then cool down.  Increase the distance of the fast section as you can.  I would cut it down to 4 runs personally.  say tuesday, wed, frdiay and sunday Tuesday a hilly run or fartlek, wednesday super easy run, thursday rest/cross train (this is a triathlon forum after allSurprised) Friday tempo run (IMO these are the best way to get faster), Saturday off running, sunday long run (start at 6 miles and work your way up from there).

Also, one quick note.  A 5K is meant to HURT and I mean HURT.  At the end of my fastest 5ks (sub 25 so still not all that fast) I wanted to vomit.

I ran a 5K once in High School in 22 min. I was 185 lbs back then.
I ran 5K yesterday in training, tempo run speed and I did 24:00. I am 210 now, same height, many more miles and pizzas boxes behind me.
I think I could get down to 21, but it would probably mean throwing up afterward, which I am willing to do.

Linda, I too think you need to try to give your body a rest. If your legs are getting shot so soon, you may not be recovering enough. Oh, and I am 6ft even, and have been since age 14.

I am very impressed with everyone's times and hard work! My PR so far is 22:06. I'm 6'3" and weighed 220-ish at the time.

22:37 - But even though I'm considered a Athena when I ran this 6'0 ~ 155ish lbs - I also know that I have a good 5-8 inches on most other Athena's

..The problem I have is that I can stay around 155-160 with little effort but anything below that is a struggle

20:34  at the 2009 5k Turkey run!   PR for me, and exactly 7 months after major knee surgery.  Had a couple good months of training once I cleared the long rehab.

Previous PR was 20:35, and that was when I had 2 good knees.  Always weighing ~205.

Part of the key to it is running long.  When I run, I put in 6-10 miles at a time, medium to medium/hard pace, and I dont run every day.  I actually swim and bike alot.  If I put in more short tempos and speedwork I think I can crack 20 this year.

21.32 (6.57pace) in a 5k after a 19.5 mile bike leg in 2006.  Hopefully at age 48, I can tie that in August!

I ran 26:50 a couple of years ago, but it was a massive, heart-ripping, gargantuan effort for me.

In truth, 5km is more likely to take me about 38 minutes these days! But, I need to enjoy running, and really don't if I have to push too hard!

I'm a slow one dreaming of maybe taking a few minutes of my time and getting my 5k down below 25 minutes. I also don't have the weight of these fast people (6'1" and just barely a clyde) so you guys just ruined my day. Thanks.

I don't think this will make the winners list, but my fastest 5K was 32:10.  It was the only 5K I ever ran that was officially timed, and it took place as the first leg of a backwards triathlon.  The race had over 350 feet of elevation change and took place at 6700 feet.  I feel like I did pretty well for a big fella.

My tentative goal at this time is 32 minutes.... 6'2"
