I am currently communicating with TJ about his setup.  Jealous? Yeah, I thought so.  I am going to my fitter armed with TJ's take on the setup.

I'm hoping it works out well Mike.

Here's one of Landis... a bit more conservative than TJ (no Jockstraps)

Also, if I remember right there was a thread a few months ago about this position... some good info from  on it I believe... might be worth digging up.

you do understand that aside from helping move stuff around, unless your fitter has a wind tunnel he cant tell you if its going ot be faster.....

I am not looking for the aerodynamically fastest position as much as I am looking for a sustainable aero position.  I am certain that a comfortable, even if it is different, aero position is ALMOST ALWAYS better than on the handlebars.

Also, his position just makes more sense than hands down low for the average conditioned triathlete.  It doesn't change the size of your profile, and your aerobars/forearms break the wind for your head/body.  (Like the nose of a jet).

Low hands would create one air disturbance at the hands, and another at your chest/head).

If you knew NOTHING about triathlon, which picture looks more aerodynamic?

that is taking into account that the air from top of your hands to bottom of your chin is "dirty" in the second picture and that your forearms taking the brunt of the wind is "aero" in the first.

Which might very well be.

Can you clarify, or were you saying that you aren't sure?

Ok, similar scenario (different but not totally off topic)

Is it better (in this scenario...interchangable with "more aero") to have your water bottle mounted ABOVE the aerobars (the new wave) or have something like a Profile design "aerodrink" that hangs "under" the aerobars.

Same with your forearms.
1.)Pointed up ( a la TJ) they form a "shield" of sorts to the air.
2.)Pointed forward (most people) they form a "spear" of sorts.

Now the next question is... is having that "hole" opened up dirtying the air (making you slower)
or
is "shielding" with your forearms actually making your surface area bigger (making you slower)

I don't know, but that comes to mind

Here is what I use as evidence is swimming.

If you were going through water instead of air, you would try to get as much of your body in a single line as possible.  Unfortunately, the "spears" (forearms) are still attached to the upper arms.

My swimming form is horrible, because every part of my body is on its own plane.

Ahhh, but what if there is a 15 mph crosswind for much of your ride?  Which position is more aero then?  Make sure the fitter takes that into account!

Mike - bottom line - you are spot on...get fit for whatever position you can sustain for the highest percentage time for your usual/next race.   Just make sure you can maintain upright and steer a little bit on the damn bike too!

Then wouldn't you be better off trying to get your body more stretched out into a "spear" then putting your arms up in front of your face like a "wall"?

I agree, but you have to also take into account "where" your upper arms are compared to where your forearms will be.

Any way you look at it, if it is comfortable, it's not bad... if it feels similar... without a wind tunnel it's hard to say if it's going to hurt or help.

(edit) here's the thread by Daremo on it.

Mike, buddy, your doing Savageman right?  F-it.  Your not going to be in aero very long anyway so it really doesn't matter.  You should be figuring out your best climbing position!

pga_mike - 2010-02-04 11:27 AM Here is what I use as evidence is swimming.

If you were going through water instead of air, you would try to get as much of your body in a single line as possible.  Unfortunately, the "spears" (forearms) are still attached to the upper arms.

My swimming form is horrible, because every part of my body is on its own plane.

Three things here Mike you need to look at when you are looking at aerodynamics and your water theory.

1. the water is not usually moving at you (like wind) or from odd angles (like cross winds), so yes if there was no wind at all; then you would be correct.
2. You have to understand that as the wind passes around your body, the wind becomes disturbed and causes drag. There are theories out there that suggest that at certain speeds it is good to have your hands and arms break up the wind so it becomes more turbulant and is less affected as it moved around your body and off your bike. Like front forks break up the wind to make it move around your legs as you pedal.
3. A lot of what has to do with make something more aero has to do with the speed that the object is traveling (i.e. aero helmets and a aero front wheel). The % gained by these items is not as great at say 12mph as they are at 35mph. So what makes TJ faster in his set up may be because of the speed he averages vs a age grouper that does not go that fast.

I still contend that a more "upright" position might be better for you vs. being so aggresive over the bars. The % gains benfit from a pure comfortability stand point would be as good or great than some freaky aero position...

yes. I am pretty sure some of the fastest TT tested and Hour TT times have comes from the *superman* position, stretcehd out.

It's a real shame that they took away his hour record and switched it to a "best human effort" record.
