Pre-race routine:

I used this as a training run. Other than a short taper, did nothing specific. Had My usual pre-race breakfast...Coffee & Oatmeal
Event warmup:

Short jog..too cold to be standing around much
Run
  • 1h 49m 30s
  • 21.39 kms
  • 05m 07s  min/km
Comments:

I was not really "racing" this, but being a typical Type "A" there is still some. Give the conditions, I am happy with this. The last 6k, my mental toughness was lacking & i stopped for short walk breaks, when I might have continued if I was in a different "mode". The course was over-measured by 300m, which give my rate was slightly under 2 minutes. This would make my time respectable for me, even with the snow, etc. My slowest half prior to this was 1:47ish. This would have been similar.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. The water stations, had too little water in cups. At about 15k, started to get a bit of a headache, which is often dehydration with me. Knowing this, I would have had supplemental water, although I have never done this for a race before. Also, my mental toughness in the last 5k, was a little lacking & I took the easy way & walked for a half to a minute at times, when I would probably would not have otherwise. My clothing was appropriate & my single gel, half way, was good.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much...bottle of water, Cappuchino on way home to shower & then post race brunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Snow & mental race mindset. After a race such as this, you realize how much of your performance is mental!!!

Event comments:

No one does this race for a PB. The unpredicatability of weather, etc, does not allow this. It's purpose is to give some training focus in the long winter months. I did this!

Performance: Average
Maintained about a 5min/km pace for first 15k. Did not look at Garmin much, just went by feel. Last 6k was rough, added average 30secs to each km. Much of this part of course had no pavement, instead slush & snow, making footing difficult & much more work. With my "training run" mentality, did slack a little here as well. My mental toughness in this difficult part of the race, was of some suspect!
Course: Boring, about 10k through an industrial park & the other 10 through suburbia!!

I would probably remark to your next race report...I could never run in that heat!! I have run in Florida on vacation, when I'm there & don't "adjust well".

Thanks for your comments!!

Nice run!  I'm "running" the Hypothermic Half in Moncton this weekend, as the 2:30 pace bunny.  I wanted to do the race for training too, so this will be perfect.  I'm just hoping that I don't get too comfortable walking, since they ask that all pace bunnies run 10min, walk 1min, the whole way.
