Hey all, just finished NOLA HIM and now looking to sign up for B2B.  A few questions:

Looking at the RR's from last year I saw quite a few 1hr swims.  The current makes that much of a difference?  Plan to train for 2.4 miles but might slack a little to concentrate on the bike.

May need a couple of folks for two relay teams.  One swimmer and one runner.  Not sure if the event would let one person swim one portion for one team and then run for another team.

Hey all.  I think you can add another one to the list for the full.  I was planning on IM CdA this year for a third time, but my work schedule just screwed that up.  I think I will now take it easy for a month or so and begin full on IM training again sometime in June.  Hope to see you all there!!!

The current is pretty strong.  I finished the swim around 55 minutes.  I'm an average swimmer and I felt good when I got out of the water.  I did do a great job of sighting and I had very little contact with other swimmers.  I think you pick up about 20 minutes on the swim vs. pool times.  I don't know how much of that time is from the current and how much of it is from the wetsuit.

A tip:

Swim in the middle or left side of middle of the channel.  The current is stronger there and most folks swim on the right side of the channel.  I swear every time I breathed to my right I saw this mass of splashing and arms, but I only had a couple people within 20 yds of me.  I picked up the tip about where the current was stronger by emailing a couple local fishermen, and the two responses I got were left side of middle.  Obviously I don't know for sure this is true, but Neil (Skippy74) and I swam over there and it sure seemed faster.

Hi all!

My husband and I are actually doing the B2B Half-Iron distance, but since it doesn't look like there's an active thread for the HI (and there's great info. in this one already that applies to both courses), I thought I would jump in here.  Hope this is OK? Smile

This will be our third half iron and it is by far, the one that we are most looking forward to.  We can't wait to see what it's like to actually race in cool temperatures.  That aside, it appears that this race is highly received by the athletes who complete it.  When I read that folks are doing it again or doing the full b/c they did the half last year... I take that as a very good sign!

I'm looking forward to hanging out on this board with all of you over the next few months.  November will be here before we know it!  Yay!!!

We are booked at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside.

I'm also doing the half iron and I am also booked at Hilton Riverside.  A friend of mine did the full last year and said that the Hilton worked out well for them.  She's signed up for the half this year.

Brown - thanks for the update and the tip.

Will sign up the relay team this week.  I am going to use the BT IM plan (sans running) starting in late June.   In the meantime I am doing Jorge's Winter bike program and it is kicking my tail.

Glad to see some activity on the board and am looking forward to this race.

Gary---Doug is right on about the channel and where to swim (he was nice enough to share the tip with a bunch of us BTers that did a group swim!!)  I swam 44:xx last year for the full on almost no swim training and a very comfortable effort on race day BUT I do come from a swimming background---that said I did use the extra time to get in an extra bike or run here and there...  I've seen the current time savings ranging from 10-20 mins (some say slower swimmers get a little more benefit)  I'd say that range is probably right---maybe only 10min savings with the current for some and closer to 20 for others......

Skippy thanks for the followup. According to my chart that is swimming a 1:11/100m pace.  Adding 20 minutes would put you at a 1:44/100 pace (non-current aided).  Does that sound about right?

In the NO 70.3 I avg 2:26 but I sighted wrong, went wide and easily swam an extra 200meters (plus I just started swimming Jan '09 and am not a natural swimmer).  I had hoped for a 2:15 pace.

Gary,
See you live in Baton Rouge.  I am from Louisiana and still have a brother who lives in Baton Rouge.  He is the director of Homeland Security for Gov. Jindal.  I am doing the B2B full in November.  I may be visiting Baton Rouge to see my brother if so I will let you know and maybe meet up.  Just completed the Florida 70.3 and made some great friendships with Bters who did the race.  Now have my sights on the B2B full in November.  This is my first attempt at an Ironman.

BCooper - would love to meet when your in town.  Just let me know.

Aquagirl - you have a good point but I was lamely referring to newbies to thread (although technically so am I).  In reality I was attempting to start lining up free drinks for myself.  Beer is an important factor in my training and I have found that free beer works better.

I don't think that I got a "20 minute advantage"....as a knowledgable poster over on ST commented on this race---the faster the swimmer the less advantage they get from the current---I'd put my advantage at about 10-11mins  I think I'm very capable of an "easy" 55min IM swim.  I think you can hit 2:15 if you spend your swim time on getting a smooth, efficent stroke---I think it pays off more on this swim then most because of the current....

It'd be awesome if they could time the swim starts to coincide with the max flow tide..Last time I looked, though, the tide for 2010 was somewhere between ebb and flow at the start for the full..IOW, possibly a little less current than in the race's first two years. I think it's a fast swim even without an incoming tide, just not quite as fast. Que sera, sera..

Folks doing the half should feel more current as the race starts later...

Race feels like it's less than 6mos away...

Beer. The perfect recovery drink.
Yes. Really. After a long ride, this is what I reach for when I get home.

Yeah, you make me grumpy. I look at a single carb and gain 2 pounds. You eat all day and lose weight. There's got to be a middle ground somewhere.

It was Friday night, I believe. Sat is the race, both half and full. We're on the course at the same time.

Skippy - thanks for the info.  Will start back up with my masters class here soon and may get a couple of more lessons.  I would love to beat 2:15/100m.

Aqua girl - lol, glad I am not the only one that does that.

Website reads that the water temps, in the past, has been 60/70's. Can that be so in November? What do the general temps look like? Googled for some pics & the spectators seemed to be dressed to impress the gods of coolness.
