Subject: What kind of bike shoes for IM - road or tri?
Just curious to see what y'all prefer wearing for the 112 mile portion of an IM race:
road shoes (w/ socks)
--- or ---
tri shoes (no socks)
??????

I've been thinking a lot about getting some Specialized Tri Vents for my shorter tris this year but just curious if you all prefer different shoes for IM (or even HIM) races?

i've only EVER owned ONE pair of shoes in the 4 years of my cycling experience (on both road and tri bikes). and said shoes are crappy Nike road shoes w/ 3 velcro straps. and often my feet go in and out of numbness when i ride

so needless to say i'm realllllllly ready for a shoe upgrade.

i'm contemplating 2 options: (both roughly $400ish)
1 - get the Specialized Tri Vents AND something like the Sidi Genius 5 Carbon road shoes
2 - just get really nice road shoes like the Sidi Ergo 2 Carbon Lites

in case it matters, my 2010 race schedule includes: 2 sprint tris, 3 oly tris, a century race, a HIM, and then the big IMFL (my 1st!!)

thoughts/comments?

I'm doing my first IM this year (IMKY) and wear the Specialized Tri-Vent.  I really like the shoe.  I've done 5 HIM's in it and many 70+ mile rides and never had issues with foot numbness, with our without socks.

I did my first IM last year and wore road shoes without socks.

I don't really do many triathlons so didn't want to spend loads of money on new cycling shoes.  I can't see tri shoes would help me go any faster.

Whichever you find more comfortable. Tri specific shoe's really only differ from road shoes in the way they are tightened. Tri shoe's have only one or two straps to facilitate fast entry and exit. But when it comes to Ironman, that time isn't as important as say a Sprint or Olympic.

I think the most important thing is that the shoes are comfortable.

For my Im, I went with Tri shoes with socks

I agree with everyone else here -- for me it is all about comfort. I get a much better fit from my roadie shoes, so I do all of my longer rides with them. For an IM, at my pace an extra 5 seconds in T1 and T2 are not going to make any difference in my placement. Being as comfortable as possible on my bike will.

I wear my Sidi Genius 3 road shoes, no socks.

As for time spent putting on road vs. tri, last year at my HIM I was 4th off the bike in road shoes, the 1st off the bike girl had tri shoes and came in about 20 seconds in front of me.

I ride my road shoes with carbon soles for HIMs and IM as they fit better and are more comfortable. Olys and sprints I wear my LG tri shoes.

No socks as I pee on my bike and wet socks just aren't fun for 112 miles.

tri shoes (the only ones I have and I only know they must be tri shoes from way they open) with socks.  I run with socks too.

All my rides are with tri shoes. I've got road shoes somewhere in the house but don't see any point in wearing them any more.
The only time I wear socks is when it's less than about 60 degrees.

3 HIMs later I still wear tri shoes without socks for rides. I've got another HIM and an IM this year and have all intention of wearing tri shoes to both as well as any OLYs I might sign up for.

Whichever you find more comfortable. Tri specific shoe's really only differ from road shoes in the way they are tightened. Tri shoe's have only one or two straps to facilitate fast entry and exit. But when it comes to Ironman, that time isn't as important as say a Sprint or Olympic.

When I was researching this I found that an additional difference is that most triathlons specific shoes are padded around the top whereas most bike shoes have little padding there, making it much more comfortable to go sockless.

I have done all my triathlons and cycling in the same pair of Sidi Genius 4 shoes from 2002 or so. Recently I got a great deal on some high end Sidi triathlon specific shoes that were heat molded to my feet. I haven't actually ridden them yet; waiting for the weather to get better.

I've also read where some for IM distance wear shoes that are maybe a 1/2 size to large for toe comfort. Anybody use this method?

xWhatever # on all the above.  I'll just add that I only own tri-vents and that's what I wore all last season (racing/training) for HIM/IM without socks--NO problems at all!!  My shoes are nice and snug so when it's cold out I will put on a pair of socks just to keep the feet warmer due to all the venting in the shoes but really have to loosen them....BUT the MOST importantant for IM is your comfort for 112!!

I use my road shoes. But I don't even own tri-shoes.

Use whatever is more comfortable. It's 112 miles. You better be comfortable!!!

FWIW, in an IM, you see many people decked out in complete cycling gear and then they change completely to run gear.

As for your new purchase, I would imagine your longer races/rides are more important to you. So get whatever works for those long rides.

road shoes for me, with custom insoles.  They have two velcro straps and a rachet strap and I've never once thought "man, these sure do take a long time to get into..."  I've actually never felt the need to get them on faster and I'm super stoked on the fit.  (Although, I mostly do longer tris, so super speedy transitions aren't usually my top priority - a comfy fit on the other hand, is.

So, in short, I agree with everyone else: fit/comfort is key.
