Goal for April - 199.5

Still humming along.  I'm still confident that I'll make it to my goal for this month.  I've increased my carbs, and dropped my protein a bit.  I'm also coming up on some more intense workouts with more sprints, intervals, and tempo runs.  It will be interesting to see the results from the calorie increase.

'Morning Skinnies!  Hope everyone had a great week.  I'm excited to report weightloss this week - only 1.5 lbs, but I'll take anything I can get.  I'm sticking with P90X, and have refocused myself and am following the P90X meal plan again.  I see great results when I follow it, so it would be in my best interest to stick with it this time.  Here are the numbers:

  • Feb 1: 164
  • March 1: 165
  • April 1: 163.5
  • April 7: 162.5
  • April 14: 162.5
  • April 21: 161
  • April Goal: 159

Along with some of the others that have posted recently, I'm definitely not understanding the correlation between my eating habits and the weight loss/gain I have been experiencing lately. I've eaten more junk food, deserts, etc and haven't been drinking the water I should this last week. I was expecting some weight gain. I step on the scale and SURPRISE! I've met my goal for the month. I did run a half marathon Saturday, but I normally do a long run on Saturdays of 10-12 miles so I wouldn't think that would do it. Now if I can just keep it off and keep moving in the right direction. If someone out there does discover the magic thing that ties all this together, please let me know.

For people who have been on a very restrictive diet, or creating a huge calorie deficit for weeks on end, sometimes we have to do a three day "high carb"  re-feed.  It helps to reset Leptin levels.  I have to do this every 9-10 weeks to keep weight dropping.  THis helped me get from 245 down to 155-160 in six months, and I've used it with clients in my old fitness consulting business.  Is that why you're losing on those weeks?  I don't know.  I don't know your routines.  BUt, it IS a possible explanation.

Wow, it's great to read all the updates. I just finally got on the scale late last week after a winter spent eating junk food and sitting on the couch. This translated to a 30 pound weight gain.
I'm so relieved to finally have stopped the downward spiral.

    4/16   188.1
    4/21   185.5

My goal for the end of May is 175.

I started a 12 week triathlon training program so with eating right and the training I hope to see some positive results.

    1. Great job everyone! Looks like I'm the only one who gained this week. GRRR. Glad to see everyone else is getting lighter.

    2. Brian - Are you a detective? I did taste the cake. BUSTED! It was the tiniest taste ever. AND I wrote it in my food diary. GAH.

    3. April 1 - 152.6
    April 7- 151
    April 14 - 149.8
    April 21 - 152.4

I almost cried this morning. I was less good this week, I'll admit. 2 cheat meals, 2 glasses of wine, some intentionally missed workouts. But I can ASSURE you all that I did not eat 9100 more calories than my body needed, as this gain would suggest. Trying not to get too discouraged. It's hard. Sorry, team. I hope to have better news next week. Y'all keep up the fantastic work.

Keep at it.  I've had two months of virtually not weight loss and then lost over 5 lbs in one week. Who knows why these things happen but if you stick with it, you will lose the weight.

I have been known to catch people...LOL. Weigh yourself for the next couple days and see if it stays or disappears.

Nope I gained 1.6 also to put me at 181.4. But like I said on the nutso thread I have lost every week for a few months and my eating has been off so it was to be expected.

    Feb 1st- 198
    March 1st-190
    April 1st  -184.2
    April 7th- 181.2   down 3
    April 15th- 179.8  down 1.4
    April 21st- 181.4 up 1.6

I actually know what the problem is my food scale broke and I haven't purchased a new one. I guess it's time to suck it up and spend the money and get another one.

Eahlquist, do NOT get discouraed by a single metric.  When I was seriously cutting (like trying to get down to 5% - 6% bodyfat) I weighed myself 3 times per day at the same time each day.  At the end of the week I plotted my Opening Weight, Closing Weight, High Weight, and Low Weight.  Oddly enough, when I plotted these, it looked a lot like a japanese candlestick chart for stocks.  My closing weight was often higher than my opening weight, but the low, and high of the week were both lower than the low and high of the preceding week.  Basically, if I had a lower low and a lower high, my weight was trending downward.  Now don't worry about all of that.  There's no need to obsess over weight.  I did this, and had body builders and MMA fighters as clients, and weight was a HUGE deal for both of them.  (BTW, this will NOT turn into an advertisement.  I no longer sell fitness services of ANY KIND, so it's all just silly free advice.

Also understand that your weight WILL retrace!  You'll have two weeks in a row when your weight will go up or stall...then it'll all drop off with another two lbs the next week.  Especially for women, these weight fluctuations will drive you NUTS.  Then the stress of that silly weigh in causes increases in Cortisol which causes you to hold water...  Now, chill out, don't worry about it.  If you go three weeks in a row with no weight loss, then you might need to make a change, but this is just data.  It isn't good.  It isn't bad.  It's just data.  It's a result.    Next week, you'll have another result.

April 21 221, A right good pace my friends!  I completed my first 10K race on Saturday, a pretty hot time of 56:36, I was hoping for 10MM, but came closer to 9!  I guess that is what happens when you train after work and race before work.  Surgery tomorrow, so I won't be able to swim for 2 weeks!  I am hoping that will lead to some smokin' hot run and bike time improvement soon!

Found The Biggest Loser an eye-opener this week. Those people can bust a gut all week and come out with a one lb. loss, or be sick and lose 10 lbs.
The body does what it does - it's just a matter of new habits over the long haul. I have a tendency not to be consistent, but that is changing.

Thanks, Tim. I was really bummed but I feel better now. I didn't even factor in stress levels - which have been high. I'm down 2 lbs today and expect a decent weigh in next week.

Heather - re: food scales. I have a cheap one and the other day I weighed a 5 oz can of tuna on it and it read 3 oz. Uh-oh! Hopefully I'll buy a nice one soon, but for now I've been measuring with tbs, tsp, cups, etc. For meats I estimate that a deck of cards = 4oz.

I hate corny lines, but it is true that every moment is a chance to make the "right"/best choice we can with regard to food and training. When I despair, often, I remind myself it's a lifestyle.

Hang in there!  I know that my weight yo-yo's a lot too.  I can change 4 lbs in 24 hours (weighing at the same time both days).  This could just be a time where you were holding more water.  Keep looking forward rather than back - I bet you'll be down again next week.  Keep up the good work!
