I've been looking at this one being my 1st sprint tri (1st tri, ever).....and wanted to hear what everyone thought of it.  His letter was amazing.

I'm hoping I can get my swimming down.....and I'm pretty sure I can.  I know it's short to you guys.  But I'm coming from completely whooped at 50yds, two weeks ago today.  I have 8 weeks, though.

How's the bike course?  Run course?  Everything clearly marked/manned?  I'm gonna need every foot to be on the proper course!....lol.  Would anyone be interested in meeting me there one afternoon (when I'm in the area) to ride the bike course and probably ride the run course, too?

Anyways....I heard it mentioned, here....and wanted to ask, before I push the button.

Thanks

jeff

It's a great race for first timers! They do a show of hands for beginners before the race and it's always alot. The swim is doable and almost the shortest you'll find. Rest at each wall if you need to. People can pass easily at the wall and the swim time you enter will seed you where you need to be. Between now and then just try to build up from 6x50 to 3x100 to 2x150, then to 300 straight. And like I said, if you don't progress that much, rest at the walls.

The bike course is 4 laps, which some people don't like, but I love it. There are people at every turn. I suggest a bike computer to tell your distance in case you lose count of the laps. I like the 4 laps because my family can see more of the race and I get faster every lap as I get comfortable.

The run course is also well manned, the Kirby's seem to have a big family and lots of friends, even the little kids get out there handing out water. Not much shade. My only negative for this race is the run is hot, but some of the neighbors put out a sprinkler.

Overall it is a less formal race with a very positive atmosphere. Scott Kirby does a great job directing the race and the addition of FS Series proffesional timing and logistical help has made it even better. This was my 2nd tri and it's the only one I have done every year (registered for 4th year already).

That's exactly what I wanted to hear.  I'll probably add it, tonight.

Thank you.

I agree with everything Mark said. This was my first tri last year. I love it. There are traffic circles on the bike course, but only one is technical. Because the cap is 200 racers it is more freindly. DO IT!!!

I just registered. Sounds like a fun little race! How "tight" are the turns on the bike course? Its 4 laps from the sound of it, right?

I ride this course often. The only tough "turn" is around the circle at Falls River Way Ave and Wide River Dr.  The issue is this is the beginning of the loop where youcan really pick up speed. The ground slopes from right to left and the "circle" is elongated and a little tight. It is a good idea to try to enter this circle clear of other riders. The other circles are wider sloping turns and are no problem.

Dunn Rd. narrows at one point and is a slight uphill, but should be a non-issue.

If you want to come ride the course one weekend send me a PM and I'll meet you there and take you through the course.

Doug

11 Spots left! And that's 2 less than 15 minutes ago.

I find the traffic circles to be alot of fun, but I do try to enter them alone if possible because I want to start wide, come in close, and exit wide.

I hadn't planned to ride this one before the race, but if y'all get a group together I'll ask my wifey if I can play, too. I'd like to average 20mph on this course. (That's smokin' fast for me, but I did 18 last year.)

7 spots left.  This will be my 1st, guys.....so be gentle!

I'd love to come down one day (BTW....I have no idea what town it's even in!) and ride the bike course....and probably ride the run course, too (just to see it).  We can run if you'd like.....makes no difference to me.

Thanks for the information.  It put me over the edge.  As it stands, right now, I will finish no further back than 193rd.Tongue out

Jeff:

You are going to love this race! There really will be a lot of 1st timers.

I will try to organize a group ride one of the next 2 or 3 weekends. Post what days work for you: 4/24, 4/25, 5/1, 5/2, 5/8 and/or 5/9.

Weather permitting I am willing to do it repeatedly. I ride it most weekends anyway. So if we cannot do it all together, I'll do it with anyone whenever they want to. the course is only 4 miles from my house.

Unfortunately I cannot drive to the course as the main road that leads there is too dangerous (IMHO). So I drive to the parking lot where it starts and go from there.

If you look it up on-line it is the parking lot on Bedfordtown Dr. Between St. Paula Square and Zuzu Dr. You can see the pool and tennis courts using Google map.

Doug and I don't work for FS, but I wonder how many BTers we have talked into signing up. Just 1 slot left!

Of course, we get the blame if they don't like it....

Coupla Q's....

1.  My wife "may" be interested in volunteering....IF (biggie)...someone can assure her she can do something "fun"....lol.

2.  I'm betting I'll be interested in a different type of refreshment than an orange slice; a banana or a bagel, after the race.

Anyone heading to a local watering hole, afterwards?  Hell, I may drink a celebratory beer if I make it through the swim.

Contact the race director (RD) as far as volunteering. There should be a link from the FS Gary Kirby page. It will still be early in the AM when we are done so a "local watering hole" may not be available. Of course you can always bring your beverage of choice in a cooler!

I've got a few people planning to get out there Saturday May 8th at 8 or 8:30 if anyone wants to come. It's short loops so we don't really have to stay together. I'm planning to hang with my friends on hybrids for awhile and then bust out two or three fast laps. I have to be leaving before 9:30.

Thanks for the offer.  I'll probably take you up on it.  Ask your friends if they'll ride slow, so I can keep up!

I'm gonna have to beg out on the ride Sat. AM.  I have a buyer for a bike I have for sale.  And, I have to take the bike 1/2 way (opposite direction) to meet him.

I could ride, there, Sunday...if anyone is interested.  Or, possibly the next Saturday (if done, early - my brother turns 50 on the 15th).  I have a mini-sprint scheduled for the 16th.  So, I'm not sure how much I'd ride, either.

Thanks for the offer.  I hope to take someone up on a future one.

Sincerely,

jeff

Are there any people from here that are planning on volunteering?  Registration is closed so I can't race, but I'd love to go volunteer (or even spectate) and meet fellow BT people!
