New user 66 Raleigh, NC | Subject: RE: Talk to me about the Gary Kirby Good detective work Doug! I'm #68 and am headed out at 8:17:30. I know I didn't intentionally inflate my swim time, but now I'm hoping I didn't put down something too fast by mistake. Guess I'll find out when someone tries to swim over me in the pool. Headed over to get the race packet. |

However, my focus is on learning the disciplines and the various aspects of the race, and making friends. I'll be wearing a dayglow yellow Brooks running singlet for the bike and run. I'll be easy to see when you by. Not sure what I will be riding yet as my friend Robert always brings a bike to the races for me to use. Since he is not in this race I hope he lets me ride his tri bike (probably won't happen thougth). LOL At least I shouldn't be on my mountain bike. Since early pick-up is so late I may wait until Saturday morning to pick up numbers. I hope to meet many of you on Saturday. |

I should have a few with me. And, if the neighborhood's too rich to (kidding) let us swim in their cement pond.......we'll just tailgate in their parking lot.

Master 1240 Knightdale/Raleigh | Subject: RE: Talk to me about the Gary Kirby Looks like my AG is too small for my top half of AG to make sense, so I'll adjust to top half of overall men. Does anyone else scope out the competition? There are a couple of guys that beat me last year that I'd like to beat this year. One of my weaknesses is a lack of competitive spirit, so I'm trying to push myself. Dan Bowen from WRAL is in my AG, he looks fitter than me, though. |

I totally check out the competition, probably more than I should. There's a guy that beat me by .8 sec at the Triangle Ortho Centennial Sprint in April that I'm definitely trying to beat (It was my fault, tried to run out the bike exit in T2. He was third in AG). I'm shooting for @ 1:10-12, which based on last years results would put me on the podium in my AG. Dave |

I was 11th OA last year, and 2nd in my AG. I am a little heavier as I am trying to peak later in the year but I am stronger this year. I did 1:07 last year and would like to break that and perhaps get 1:04 or lower. Only 4 of the people that beat me are returning this year. I did the Triangle Ortho this year but took it easy as I was using it as a training day. I am hoping for some type of homefield advantage, but you never know what the day is going to bring. Right, right... first tri, you shouldn't have a time goal. Just finish and enjoy the experience... ...But we all know you have a secret time goal. Just like I would secretly like to come in closer to 1:13 and Dave is really aiming for under 1:10. |

Just like I would secretly like to come in closer to 1:13 and Dave is really aiming for under 1:10. I checked out the swim times from people last year and where they are seeded this year. There are some fast swimmers seeded appropriately, and some slow ones out in front. The person starting right in front of me swam a 5:58. Not sure what time she put to get where she is this year (unless she has gotten faster) because I normally swim about a 4:15-4:30 for 300yds and am starting behind her. Anyway, I find the swim time prediction thingy complicated too :-) Mark, didn't you get seeded #1 in one race? I seem to recall you being horrified at that! :-) Anyway, hoping to come in close to an hour for this. I know the guy who finished second last year in 58 mins and he is faster than me, but not by more than 3 or so mins, so hoping for a 1:00 - 1:02 ish. Swim: 4:30; 1 min transition, bike: 34:00; 30s transition; run 21:00. That is if EVERYTHING comes together but you can hope with these things eh? |

Master 1240 Knightdale/Raleigh | Subject: RE: Talk to me about the Gary Kirby Louis, I might have talked about a race where the lady and husband (and please excuse the judgement) who clearly should have been way in the back were #1 and #2. Can you imagine, standing there in front of everyone, wearing #1. I genuinely felt bad for her. No one would do that on purpose and people were definitely noticing. If I see anyone in my AG it either means they had a major problem or I am and it's one of the few starting 11+ minutes behind me. I picked out a random guy to try to catch, don't even know his AG. If he is about the same as last year, catching him would give me a great time. |

Member 21 Wake Forest, NC | Subject: RE: Talk to me about the Gary Kirby I think there are 18 or 19 in my mid-life crisis division. However, my goal is to finish before Jeff runs out of beer (my preference is dark. LOL). I come from a running background but have been unable to get into a normal running stride in any of my races coming off the bike. At Beaver Dam and again at Buckhorn I got terrible quad cramps during the run and thus had my slowest 10K and 5K times of my life. So another goal for tomorrow is not to cramp during the run. I did my first flip turns 2 nights ago at the Y. I think I will try them on the turns except for where we have to go under the lane ropes. Final goal is to have lots of fun and have a big smile on my face when I cross the finish |

New user 66 Raleigh, NC | Subject: RE: Talk to me about the Gary Kirby When I was out at the rec center last night to pickup my race packet (haha) there was a sign up saying they were having a pool luau from 11-3 Saturday. Nice. My goal is 1:15, and I'm hoping to podium in the clyde division. I believe if I had a tri or road bike I could do it fairly easily based on last years results, but my main goal is I want to have the fastest run split in the clyde division. I should be 6:15-6:30 in the swim, 42-43 min on the bike, and trying for a sub 23 min 5k. I'm only putting on running shoes and socks in T1 and changing nothing in T2, so I'm hoping my transitions are pretty quick.I'll be wearing black tri-shorts and a red under armour shirt for the whole event. |

I'm in the lobby of the Hampton Inn - Wake Forest @ 4:45AM.....having a cup o joe and feeling pretty darned relaxed. It's just a race, huh? I'm more worried about how I'm gonna get enough ice from the hotel to the cooler without making 30 trips. Let's have a beer and crash the luau! jeff |
