From the RD:
"No breaststroke.  Absolutely no breaststroke.  The breaststroke kick is not made for triathlon open water swimming, and we reserve the right to pull you from swim if you are endangering others around you with this technique."

I understand the rule, but I don't agree with it....kind of like my view on the merits of eating tofu.

Oh, and the first odd rule was "mandatory wetsuits," but that was rescinded prior to race day.

That's just stupid.  I'd spend my entry fee elsewhere.

B2B is a "mandatory wetsuit" race this year.  So there's at least 1 other race with that rule.

i kind of like it.  i've had the carp beat out of me by breaststrokers.  i don't like the "tone" or the language of the rule, though.

I like the rule as well.  I've gotten smacked in the face by a frog kicking breaststroker more than once.  I agree that it could have been worded nicer however.

Not odd.   Stupid

What, they're going to forcibly yank someone out of the water if they are breaststroking???  So if I breast stroke to sitem, they gonna send the guards after me?

I'd love to see an NCAA DI breastroker enter the race and destroy many of the "freestylers"

ETA - I don't understand the rule.  Yes, I get it, the frog kick puts your legs out, might hit someone.   But I've done lots of swims and races in the last 5 years, including 800-2000 person mass starts.  I've swum up behind people breast stroking.  Not once have I ever seen a breaststroker "endangering" those around them.

Wow....sounds like some elitist a**holes directing that race.  Way to make sure you get zero participation from the largest possible entrance pool:  newbies.

Breaststroke rule I do not agree with, mandatory wetsuits I understand why race directors implement that rule.

in my recollection, one of the recent swim leg deaths was surmised to be due to a kick in the face as the initiating event. Doesn't prove that it was a breaststroker, but much more likely that than a freestyler.

That rule should significantly reduce the size of the field for better or for worse, but I do have to admit, that even the best of swimmers might want or need a breaststroke kick or three if your goggles get knocked off, wet, fighting with seaweed, bitten by a fish, or simply want to enjoy the scenery (During the escape from alcatraz, I breasttroked about four separate times just so I could look around and appreciate the magnitude of the scenery and the location I was swimming in.

Seriously?...You breaststroked?...Just so you could look around?...During Escape From Alcatraz?...

Honestly - get a day boat, maybe take a camera, but not during Escape...

PS - Fight for the 'Ban Breaststroke Appeal'

I believe you forgot the sarcasm font

If you don't look around while swimming Alcatraz (in whatever race) you are missing one of the unique experiences you can have

If I feel disoriented or dizzy two strokes of breast stroke will get me back in the game.

That is a crazy RD, and USAT should review the entire race.  Red Flag!

Aside from the fact that this is, IMO, a stupid rule, how on earth is the RD going to enforce it? Everyone looks the same in the water --  dark wetsuit, same colored caps for AGs, etc. Is a kayaker going to kayak between a large group of swimmers to pull one person from the swim? Are they going to point to someone breastroking and say "GET OUT!!" and hope the person hears?

I saw the mandatory wetsuit thing as a frustrating/unfair rule, mostly because it required an additional expenditure of money.

However, I am not against the breaststroke rule.  While I don't object for a stroke here and there, it shouldn't be used for any length of time in a crowded field.  I struggled in my race last Saturday due to a very crowded field and breaststrokers.  The kick being the worst part.  At the time, it seemed I just couldn't get by them!

This is alleviated by having a smaller heat, though.  Which I would prefer overall, ESPECIALLY if safety is their main concern.   Then everyone can get a little free water and I would guess it's easier to keep an eye on individuals.

The should require mandatory pull buoys instead and eliminate kicks entirely if "safety" is the underlying reason

No breaststroke this year and next year it will be the backstroke.  Can't wait until they outlaw the doggie paddle.

I have to admit I agree.    I got kicked in the head on Sunday by a breast stroker.  It was hard enough that I was pretty dazed and my equilibrium was all out of whack for the race.    I wasn't wearing a wetsuit and if I went under...that would of been the end of me.  I'm glad she didn't smash my pretty face though!  Honestly after last weekend that would attract me to a race.

Perhaps if they phrased it like: "Please do not sign up for this race if you are planning on doing breaststroke the entire race- this stroke is unsafe for your fellow competitors."

Or better yet, put everyone who wants to breaststroke in one heat and let them kick each other.

I completely understand the mandated wetsuit for HIM or IM.

I cannot see the no breast stroke one, though. I don't believe I would do that race and I would write the RD and say why I wasn't doing the race. Yeah, I can swim the whole way and I really don't like being kicked but to have it mandated? No thanks.

I understand the reasoning (if in fact it's all about kicking), as I've been hit by errant kicks, but it's a stupid rule. What's gonna happen when someone drowns because they tired/panicked but chose to push through and continue freestyle instead of risking DQ'ing by resting a bit with the breaststroke?

Another example of overreaction. Just tell the competitors that if you breaststroke, move to the outside.

Wetsuit rule I can understand if conditions are very cold.  No breaststroke rule is DUMB.  Unenforceable in practice, and IMHO without justification.  Athletes always get swum over in the washing machine next to buoys, as in this video (top one in frame) from recent 10k Championships:

http://www.theathletevillage.com/articles/2010/06/07/2010-open-water-championship-did-not-disapoint

No one was doing breast stroke in there & #26 still took a mean shot to the head.  I'm only sophomore year in tri & know enough to avoid that mess.

And what about those few who still cling to the original Trudgen stroke (the father of modern freestyle)??

I don't know the swim venue or what type of start it is, but seems like would stop a lot of beginners from participating.  I would have never gotten into triathlons if that was a restriction on my first triathlon.

Maybe they should pull really slow swimmer off the course too.  And lets not forget the person who zig-zags the course and never looks where they are going until they bump into someone.  Might was well pull them off the course too.
