Boy this oughta spark some interesting posts! My wife recently got rear-ended by an 18-wheeler (yes she's fine) and the insurance company totalled the car (2002 Chevy Tracker mini SUV). What to get next? Here are some concerns:

1. Gas mileage. I'm paranoid about gas going to $5 per gallon, so I don't want some 14 mpg gas pig.
2. We never carry passengers, it's just me and Patti
3. Automatic transmission only
4. No trucks...it's our only vehicle (other than my motorcycle)
5. Easy to get in and out of (Patti has Multiple Sclerosis)
6. Triathlon friendly. Don't need to put the bike inside necessarily, but want something that will easily handle some sort of bike rack. I currently have a Thule roof rack that would adapt to anything that comes with factory rack rails
7. Price. Keep it under $26,000 please
8. Probably sticking with Japanese manufacture this time around. Had enough of American "3/36,000" crappy warranties and unreliability

I've put some of my "possibilities" in the poll...feel free to add more and vote early and often!

Max

I added the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and voted for the Ford Escape Hybrid as well.

Not sure if either comes in under $26,000 though.

I just went throught the same thing last month. I'm very glad that Patti is ok.

I learned in my shopping that there are a lot of choices in the "crossover" category - (basically a new name for "station wagon" They are smaller than SUV's and get better mileage, but still have much of the versatility.

I was impressed with the Subaru Outback and Ford Freestyle. They both had 5 star ratings from the NHTSA. They both start at around 25k.

Suzuki is trying to break into the segment with the Forenza - it is a little less powerful, a little less plush, but priced in the mid teens.

The new Prius has got lots of capacity, but they are in very high demand - expect to wait at least 3 months and pay at least list price.

Here are some usefule sites:

www.cars.com

www.edmunds.com

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/testing/ncap/

In the end, I bought a VW Jetta wagon.  (I fitted it out wih roof racks this weekend, so it is finally my car)

Good luck with your car shopping.

i voted for the mazda3...but would like to specify that this is a vote for the hatchback version. very gear-friendly, good size and should be easy to get in and out. i test drove it a few months back & it was pretty awesome. plus, it comes in fun colors, like orange

OR... mini cooper! perfect for just two people!

happy shopping and safe driving.

Guess I shoulda' read your requirements before putting the XC up there. It's a great tri car though, and you can get them used in your price range.

My Toyota Camry is at 180,000 miles and going strong, and I get 29 mpg with a V6 engine.  The new ones are zippy, and pretty comfortable, and a decent price.  I'm gonna buy another one when I get a new car - what can I say, I'm loyal

My wife also has issues with getting in and out of vehicles, and there is just the two of us as well. We used to have a small SUV for her. The seating is higher so she doesn't have to climb up out of a low car but not so high as my 4x4 that I have to lift her into. Recently we traded and got her a newer mini-van. The seat height is similar. It's much better for gas mileage, the extra space inside comes in handy for all sorts of things, and it has rails on the roof where your racks might mount too. It's a domestic make though, a Pontiac Montana, but you should be able to find a similar import if that's important to you.

Edit: with some of the rear seats out, my bike rolls right in.

Love my Subaru Outback Wagon. It sits up a little higher and is very easy to get in and/or out of. We have two children and two dogs and carry our bikes on the roof w/no problems. Also, when it is just me and the hubby, we can put the seats down and carry a bike inside if necessary. If you check out the overall rating by consumers - I believe it was 9 out of 10 and the industry rated it 8 out of 10. We get great gas mileage 28-30 on the highway and usually the lower 20's in town. We have owned Subaru's for the past 10-12 years and just love the way they hold up and we have had virtually no problems to date.

Just my thoughts!

Most importantly, very glad to hear your wife is okay!!

Cheers,
Jodi

I see Subaru Outback is winning right now. I am a Subaru devotee, but given your requirements, I would recommend a Legacy Station Wagon instead. Outbacks are basically a Legacy on a higher, SUV-like base for rougher roads (except for Outback Imprezas/sports). If you don't go on 4WD roads much, not really worth the extra cost. Plus, depending on the model, the Outback gets 6 less miles to the gallon (Foresters get about the same mpg as any midsize SUV).

I think my Legacy is the perfect tri-vehicle. I can fit my bike right in the back and you could easily put a roof rack on it.

My mom has been driving Legacy's since I was a baby (now she's got an outback). My boyfriend and I both have Legacy's (all standards, so I don't know if there are any issues with automatics). They are extremely reliable. You can count on switching out the CV joints before 100,000 mi, but that's the biggest problem I've discovered (if you are buying used, let me know there's one year and one type of engine with a problem, and I can call my mechanics and find out). They're roomy, comfy, all-wheel drive. I'll probably be buying Subarus till the day I die (next up: WRX STi, baby!).

Ok, you hit my closet geek thing. I'm into cars, Subarus in particular.... I know, weird.

I'm voting for a minivan. They aren't as sexy as an SUV, but they are cheaper, get better gas mileage, are easy to get into/out of - give you that higher profile so it's easy to see where you're going.  Take out the rear seat and you have a lot of space for a bike, etc. that can just roll right in.  Take out both of the back seats, and you've got a ready made cargo van.

What I like about mine is that my bike can always be transported inside, or if I've got it packed to the gills there are some really nice door racks that you can hang on the rear door, or get a tow package and then use one of those racks.  I get about 18-20 mpg.

We've got a Honda Civic and Buick Rendezvous. Love both vehicles. My Saris bike rack fits great on either car. The Honda gets great gas mileage and has a good safety rating. We've had it since 2000 and have had NO problems. Just simple maintenance.
I use it to go to all of my races.

Hiya Max,

Glad to hear everyone is alright.

You should check out the Toyota Matrix.  I have one and it is excellent on gas, you can throw your whole bike right in the hatchback and it is in between being too low and too high for easy transfers (I am an OT so I think about these things! )  I have the 4WD version.  There are front wheel drive versions too.  And it is within your price range

I commute and it has taken a beating and is doing well. It also did well in the Canadian winter.

Ask Michel (Machiavelo) about it too....he loves his as well.  I adore my car!!

Jen

PS   it has better gas mileage than the Mazda 3...less guts, though but I don't care...I need to save $$ because I drive all the time

I've been thinking a lot about this, too.  We need something that can tow our camper, but I want to stay away from the trucks because they ride like trucks and get bad gas mileage, and I want to stay away from SUVs because they're expensive and get bad gas mileage.  I'm leaning towards minivans because they ride high, they're fairly cheap to buy and they get okay gas mileage comparatively.

I need to be able to haul seven people (I have many, many kids... or maybe they just have many, many friends) so maybe that colors my decision, but I adore my Toyota Previa.  Sadly, they don't make them anymore and mine has gotten old.

I know, I know, I too stumble over the "m" word in conversation.  But for my budget and needs it was the (a) cheapest and (b) seriously, the most practical.

I sometimes call it an "SUV alternative"  - and, it's better than those we're-not-calling-them-station-wagons-even-though-they-really-are.

Edit:  Would it help if I told you my other vehicle was a bad-ass sports car?  (I wish.)

I just test drove the Mazda 3 hatchback and loved it! Room for gear, very fun to drive, low enough to put a roof rack on and be able to easily load bikes on top, and a few extra miles per gallon over the Subaru since it's not AWD (I can't justify all wheel drive, it really doesn't snow much here - living in MA I would probably go with the Subaru). Only thing that wouldn't meet your requirements would be ease of getting in and out of it - definitely not as easy as an SUV. I have a Santa Fe now (super easy to get in and out of) but the problem specifically with the Santa Fe is that the factory rack is so cheaply made that I don't trust it to hold my bikes (I should qualify this by saying that I care way more about my bikes than the car). My only option now is to install a custom rack that would make resale of the car very difficult. So I'm using this as an excuse to upgrade to the Mazda 3!!!

Couldn't you just use a tow-hitch rack? I'm thinking about getting a Santa Fe, and was planning on going the tow-hitch route (we already have one on the truck).

I bought a Matrix in 2004. The main deciding factor to purchase this model was based ont he fact that I could cart my bike to triathlons easily with it. With the rear seats folded down, I can lay my bike, a 58cm, down flat no prblem. The Matrix also handles extremely well, is easy on gas and is extremely reliable -- of course, it's a Toyota! And price!  Fully loaded, it will well under your ceiling of 26K.  This is my first Toyota and I think, not my last.

Yep, the tow hitch rack would definitely work. If I keep the car that's what I plan to do. I'm still debating it - it's a great car - I've had no problems with it and would recommend it (except for the roof rack). But after owning it for a couple years I'm finding that I'm not suited for an SUV - I really miss a smaller car with standard transmission!

I love my Saturn Vue, I know you're leaning towards the Japaneese cars which we've never had bad luck with, so I can't argue.  A little known fact though, the V6 Vue's have the same Honda engine that goes into the much larger Honda Pilot.  255 hp and lots of kick, the Vue has thus far been camping and triathlon friendly.

Carrying your bike in the vehicle as opposed to carrying on a roof rack or bumber rack has its advantages:

- it is more secure and cannot fall off

- it is less likely to be stolen if I stop off at a restaurant for a coffee

- it will not get water, mud or bugs all over it before the event

- it will not sustain damage from flying debris

- it will never be ripped off the top of the vehicle when entering a low garage (car top)- les likely to be damage if rear-ended (bumper rack)

Subaru outback is a good choice.  I test drove it couple years ago when I was shopping for a car.  An AWD tend to be more $$$.  It might be a little over the budge.  Not sure of the price now.

Also check out the Scion XB.  Scion is the sub-sidiary of Toyota, hence reliable.  It sort of look like a smaller version of the Honda Element.  Fold down the back seats and you can pack your whole bedroom in the trunk.  The straight hatch back makes loading easy.  The down side is the lack of power (108 horsepower).  You might feel the drag when you are hauling stuffs, or when you have a full car with passingers.
