Did you do that Richwood, WV tri? Just kidding - I heard it was fun, but their most recent posted results are 2006 and it says to bring your own water on the run. Thought that was funny. Some friends did it and had a good time, though. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Signs you are at a really bad Tri I'd be interested in hearing some of the true ones Two Manatees (athletes in my mentor group) did a "really bad tri" this weekend, bad for multiple reasons ... including nobody knew the course, not even the volunteers, and apparently not the RD either. There's a race that offers I believe actually up to the iron distance, and yes, the bibs are write-your-own-on-paper-with-Sharpie ... what swag bag ... I hear it's not so much "really bad" as just "really laid back." |

The aid stations aren't manned and all there is at them is a couple of old Milk jugs with a little water left in them. Both of these are true. |

Deep in the Heart of Texas | Subject: RE: Signs you are at a really bad Tri I did a great Oly this year which was celebrating its 20th year. Just so happens that the mismeasured the swim and it was 1800 as opposed to 1500. Didn't bother me or anyone else I spoke with, but that is a pretty serious blunder. |

Oly I did mismeasured the swim to 1.5 MILES instead of 1.5km. Oops ... did not stop me from considering it the world's best tri, however ... I will say that significant course mismeasurements (though actually by 20% is fairly common for the swim) with no acknowledgment, and with other really bad stuff, would make for a "really bad" tri. |

Regular 853 | Subject: RE: Signs you are at a really bad Tri Hey-I did that Richwood, WVA tri last year! Wanted to do it again this year, but had a conflict with the date. My husband works for Alpha Natural Resources, and they sponsor it, so employees get free registration and lodging. I actually won the "smack talk" award last year. Which is pretty funny, because if you know me at all, I'm the one biting my nails, with fear in my eyes and telling everybody that I'm gonna be the last finisher. I did a new mountain tri/du a few weeks ago, and I was 1 of 2 women that showed up. I think there were less than 15 competitors total, and the age groups were "under 40" or "over 40" Since there were only 2 ladies competing, I took 2nd overall female. jami |

I know Frank takes alot of heat, and perhaps rightly so, but - and without meaning to hijack the thread - I raced LG last year as my first HIM (will be there again this year) and was quite pleased with how things were organized, marked, and laid out. My only real complaint is that the course talk wasn't until 7pm the night before and the race started at 6:30 am - i likes me my z's early before a race. (/hijack) |

We are working on getting the race results to you. Champion Chip is shipping new cables to us overnight. The new cables should allow us to download the data. We will send out an email when the results are posted on our website. |

Is it ok on both, or just the run?" Girl answers, "You can wear them on the run." USAT sanctioned. Look out Frank Dobbs, Chicago's got a new problem child RD in town. I'm lookin' at you RAM Racing. |

I volunteered on the run course at a tri last year, basically just standing there and making sure the athletes knew which way to turn for out and back, and which side of the road to run on. Race rules specified DQ for anyone with personal listening devices. It was an open course in a heavily trafficked area. For athletes wearing them on the run out, I insisted they take them off. Athletes who were wearing them on the run back got their numbers reported to the race director. Seriously, who absolutely has to have an iPod to run a 5K? (/rant) |

Oh no, the Bigfoot people were bought out? I did the Bigfoot race the first year, when they had a series of three, and it was great. I do recall now that company going under, I guess. Sigh. Those Frank races made me crazy. Although it does account for my one proud Oly swim in 52 degree water. Even after 10 years, I still get uptight enough about races that "fun" does not outweigh "organized." I'm glad I live in Ohio now, where we have three very fine race companies. |

He told us that he was going to go home and nap first and then he might get them up later in the day. Nice attitude. You're being paid to do this you know... |

His reputation is EXTREMELY well earned...unfortunately, I speak from experience. That said, I hope you have a great and safe race at LG. In the future, check out High Cliff, Racine and Door County HIM's, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised. ;-) |

Yep, they were bought out by the same company who did the Tri that Yanti was referring to...you should read the race reports up right now (south shore tri)...it was bad, and for no reason. One of the biggest snafu's was the exact same issue (bike in/out) we had at Bigfoot...so apparently we are not learning any lessons here. I get why Frank gets so much flak, but I feel like these guys are going down the same path (i.e. ruining perfectly good triathlons and losing certification). So off the top of my head, I can only think of two RD's with multiple triathlons in Chicagoland and both have significant quality control issues. Maybe I'll start driving to Ohio! What do you recommend??? Oops, sorry for the Hijack. This is a great thread. |
