Extreme Veteran 563 Allen, TX | Subject: so who were you pre-triathlon life? i've talked to many people since giving this sport a shot (first tri in 1.5 months!) and i've found the perspectives we take on it to be quite different depending on what we did athletically before tri's. for instance i am a cyclist. i find the bike to be by far the easiest and whenever i hear people speak of the bike as a rest phase i smile to myself knowing that any ground i lose on the swim (my worst event) i can catch up and then some on the bike. but thats just MY outlook on it. i train with a girl that used to swim in HS (just graduated so its not like she lost it or anything) and her idea of how her race will be run is very different from mine. as such i became curious to find out what all you BTers were interested in before you got into tris! |

Master 1478 Southwest Chicago 'burbs | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? Interesting question.... Before all this triathlon madness started, I probably would have defined myself as a softball player. It's what I loved doing, it's what I did well. After breaking my arm couple of years ago, I kind of struggled for a new identity of sorts.... started with the running, that eventually morphed into triathlons (especially after -- FINALLY -- this year being able to get through an OW swim without panicking). While I'm back to doing all the sports I did pre arm break, I'm finding that I enjoy them, but the passion for them has kind of moved into triathlons. I like the challenge of being able to get better and being able to compete against myself. |

Pro 4292 Evanston, | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? I took Muay Thai kickboxing classes but did not compete. Honestly I think our vision of ourselves as either "athletes" or not from Jr High & high school can kind of stick; even after years of Martial Arts I was always surprised if people referred to me as "athletic." Not an athletic soul, I guess, nor body type - short, curvy, Italian - I like to eat, you know? Now suddenly I have gone from one or two workouts a week to SIX (!), and even as a BOP'er with with only one sprint under my belt and another on the way, suddenly I am an athlete. Careful if you're thinking of standing between me and the food now! I'm most comfortable with the swim portion of tri, but never swam competitively or anything like that. |

St. Louis, MO | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? I guess, but default, I'm an "other athlete." Over a year ago, I was active and had been regularly for years. I really loved walking most, but I did aerobics, kickboxing, rollerblading... My dog and I could challenge some slow joggers on our walks and it was great. I still love a invigorating walk. Then, my friend got me into cycling. I rode across Iowa last year in RAGBRAI (and will do it again starting next Sunday!). Come fall, I started a master's swim class that my coworkers did, simply because I used to swim back in the day and like it. A coworker mentioned a triathlon. So, all that was left was a little running and voila- here I am. Altho I completed a triathlon, I don't really consider myself a triathlete. I participate in triathlons. I'm not a cyclist, a swimmer or a runner. I am a person who likes to do these sports. I think I think this way because I have no natural ability, I don't push myself like an elite athlete and I won't likely be on a podium any time soon. That's ok tho, no matter what sport I'm doing, I'm having a great time. |

Extreme Veteran 464 San Clemente, California | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? I was a professional bodyboarder from 1987 to 1998 ranked as high as 5th in the world in 1997. After retiring in 1998, I still surfed every day, and still do pretty much. I also snowboard alot in winter, but never ran, swam laps, or cycled until my wife inspired me back in March of this year by completing the LA Marathon. Now, I've done 5 tris in the past 2 months, and have my first half iron in Sept. |

Expert 1240 Columbia, MO | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? Back in the high school days, it was standard fare of baseball, basketball, football, track, wrestling...after high school, played way too much summer softball, when we moved to Chicago in 1995 I became enamoured with ice hockey and taught myself how to play...During this time my source of income was working as an assistant golf professional...some more softball after the golf, and then the sport of kart racing....still the most physical upper body workout I've discovered.... So a little of everything |

Veteran 137 Littleton, NH | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? I was never athletic. I bowled for a year in elementary school and I played tennis for 1 year in jr high. I also walked everywhere because my parents wouldn't let me get a licence, but I used to say excersize was against my religion. That was before I had a child. Competing in a triathlon (and a 5K) and being able to consider myself an athlete is very new for me and something I'm very proud of. |

Then I was a huge Spinning advocate and worked as a demo model for a now defunct company for a couple of years. I decided to run a marathon last year and here I am...training for a Half IM and a few marathons! I love this lifestyle and all of the fantastic BTers who motivate and inspire me each day! What a great community!! |

Veteran 152 Central Connecticut | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? Swimmer from Age 10 till my Sophmore Year in college, best events were the 400 IM, and 1500 yd Freestyle. Got Axed from myCollege Swim Team because my Academics took priority over swimming (Go figure!). Got recruited by my colleges crew team, which was only a club sport at the time (we went varsity my senior year). Got hooked on that till now. Only till last fall did I conceive of doing a triathlon. Now with my first one under my belt Im offically hooked on Tri's! But I still plan on rowing this fall in the fall head race season... |

I was in the army for 9 years where I did a lot of running and played rugby. Since leaving the army I started bodybuilding and won a regional competition, but became too bulky and felt unfit, which is why I turned to triathlon !! |

Veteran 465 Michigan | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? I was primarily a competitive swimmer growing up although I occasionally played other sports. After college but before the kids, I did a bit of everything - running, roller blading, kick boxing, roller and ice hockey, biking and yoga. In the past few years my primary "sport" has been raising my kids but I finally decided it was time to take care of myself and I started swimming again. It feels amazing to do something for myself - I feel human again and my kids are getting a kick out of it too! |

Elite 2706 Hurst, Texas | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? I was a world-class, champion-caliber M&M and Reese's eater, and switched to buffalo wings and the triple play platter at Chili's during the offseason. Which is why I was 306 pounds with cholesterol of 233 in January before this madness began. Now, for the first time in my life, people are referring to me as an athete, or as "in shape," and it is quite a thrill. I've got a long way to go, but this journey is incredibly rewarding. |

Master 2249 Colorado | Subject: RE: so who were you pre-triathlon life? Seeing as how I have yet to compete in a tri (Aug 6th!!!), I'm still engaged in pre-tri life quite a bit. The triathlon is still a dream, really, a desire to compete and do well but not yet a reality. I tend to wait until I do something and find out how terrible I am at it before I train to get better. I am currently a mountain bike racer. Only because I have always loved to Mtn bike and found that I really love to compete as well! I have never considered myself and "athlete" as I was never in school sports (unless you count the dive team for one year - but that was mostly a party anyway) and never ran except for the required mile for PE. I'm up to almost 4 miles now, but my body has never felt good doing it. I'm sticking to the sprint distance only because I don't think I can run any farther! sad.... |
