Expert 1074 Tyrone, Georgia | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( If you have trained you will finish. You indicate that you have been so try and keep focused on the positive aspects of your training. At the moment you finish your first tri, in my opinion, your finishing position is of little value. I was very focused on what I had accomplished and what I had come from to get there. You will do great I am sure and you should be very proud of your accomplishment when you cross the line! Good luck and I look forward to hearing about how your day goes. |

Master 1286 Mt Pleasant, SC | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( Hello You are racing yourself and you always finish first. The other racers are there to add to the excitement as there is nothing like race day. Plus you are finishing in front of all those people that don't have the courage to get off the couch and try. You will do fine. Kevin |

Master 2010 Falls Church, VA | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( You are trained and you are ready. Being nervous is perfectly normal, but do not let it overwhelm you. What is the worst thing that can happen? so you are last! I have been there, many of us have, but you will finish. And even if you don't finish, you will have taken the first step. Do your best, I think you may surprise yourself. |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( You will be fine! If you've trained for five months, you're hardly a "beginner" in the sense that a lot of folks don't take training seriously and are very new to the three sports on race day. You're already a triathlete, you just need to get it on the books. As far as finishing last goes - check out the results from last year. How do the times compare to your training times? For a new person you can almost guarantee your run will be a bit slower than in training because it's hard to pace the first time. So, build in a little time cushion there. Do you still think you'll be last? Even if it's close - finishing toward the back of the pack is OK. You will definitely get the loudest cheers! I watched the last finishers at my last sprint race and the smile on their faces said everything. They had a great time! Try to relax, keep following the plan, don't try to cram in extra workouts in the last week (i.e. follow the plan which should include a taper). You will show up on race day ready and rarin to go. You may even surprise yourself! Let us know how it goes, good luck, and have a blast! |

Veteran 263 Chicago suburbs | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( Nervous is normal. All the folks there are nervous whether they admit it or not. Just treat it just like you trained. This is about you and what you do. Try to meet a few new people there, you'll find they are usually a friendly and supportive bunch. They won't be down on you for finishing last so do yourself the same favor. You are DOING, TRYING, ACHIEVING what most people only dream or talk about. Have fun! |

Good luck and remember to HAVE FUN. Check out the DFL thread (about finishing last) ... many of BT's best and even fastest have posted there. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=217486&posts=71&start=1 |

Elite 2640 Ontario, Canada | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( Don't worry! I'm doing my first sprint tri on Sunday and I will definatly be somewhere in the back of the pack - maybe even last depending on who else comes out for the event. Like everyone else said, you're racing yourself. This is your first event so when you pass the finish line you're a winner! Most people aren't even willing to give training a try much less do a triathlon. |

Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( ajt - 2010-09-04 12:39 PM So to summarize, it does not matter what place you come in, just that fact that your attempting it is great! It is okay to be nervous, everyone is and the one thing I have discovered about this sport is that people are incredibly supportive no matter who you are! I have been competing in events at all levels for the past 35 years and I am still very nervous before everyone. At Ironman Canada this year, before the event Lisa Bentley: http://lisabentley.com/said, "Enjoy the day" and boy did that work, the rest will take care of itself. I am not in awe at all of the pros finishing in 8 to 9 hours, what impresses me the most is people who have never attempted anything in their entire life to get off the couch at whatever age and attempt these races. I get so much motivation from seeing 70 year old men and women or people of the larger variety slugging their way through the course. You will do fine and remember, Enjoy the day because it is a blast when you cross that finish line. Isn't Lisa awesome? I met her this spring and she is such a huge inspiration. To accomplish all that she has in the sport of triathlon while battling Cystic Fibrosis? Amazing. |

Champion 7547 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( Here's a key to life: "There cannot be success if failure is not possible." When you toe the start line, you're risking not finishing and finishing last for the chance to finish. That'll make crossing the finish line (last or not) sweet given three years of not taking the risk. One of my 2010 proteges just finished IMKY. He was the last person to cross the finish line before they turned it off. You think he's not an Ironman? (BTW, his finish was 2+ hours later than he hoped, but it was a tough day. ) He told me he hit mile 25 of the run and had to get the last 1.2 miles in about 9 minutes and he decided to turn it up. If he missed, it wasn't going to be for lack of trying. |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( Lots of good things in this thread! DFL? So what? Like someone posted above, the DFL thread is a great read. You're racing yourself - trust your training, the work you've put in, and the desire you have to be there. Have fun. You CAN, You WILL do this! You are going to do something 99.9999% of the population won't even think about trying, ever mind actually doing it! and don't forget - your time will be a personal record! Go out there, and kill it! Go read some of the "my first tri" stories - lots of inspiriation there! Enjoy the day and then tell us all about it on the 20th!! Member 29 | Subject: RE: So nervous about finishing my first Tri Last ! :( Hi Gidget! I have my first triathlon next weekend too, and I'm a little worried about finishing last as well. But you know what? Even if we do finish last, we will have great stories to tell about how we competed in a triathlon! That's how I'm trying to look at it, anyway. I finished last when I ran a 10K a couple weeks ago, so I have some experience with it already. Most of the people I talked to about that race afterward were very encouraging and proud of me for having challenged myself and finished the race . . . they didn't care where I placed. Good luck and have fun! |

I was so worried about hurting myself when I started training that I nearly quite. Well I didn't now I am doing my second Tri this weekend and am soooooo pumped that I can't wait to leave. Don't think, just do. You will enjoy yourself more than you think. |
