I've been practicing in jammers but kind of want to go for something lighter on the legs.  but afraid i'll look kind of funny at my gym since nobody wears them.  not in perfect shape (yet!) but not heavy either (6', 185lbs) so maybe i should just go for it?

Got for it!!!  I swim in a square leg training suit---not 100% speedo but very close and will last forever.....good compromise if want to be more modest too....

Speedo Endurance box briefs: long enough to cover the high thigh, but much less bulk than jammers.

This is as light on the legs as you can get:

I wear the "just a little bigger than a speedo" thing at the pool. Probably have a 4 inch inseam so more than a speedo but not much. I dont think I am the creepy guy at the pool but I have only asked myself and he says I look fine

Wear the speedo. You'll be ripped in no time anyway. I can't think of very many strong swimmers at my pools that wear jammers, although a few do.

Here in Australia, it's really unusual for guys at the pool to wear anything else.  When my son started swimming lessons at age 3, he demanded "proper swimming pants".  Doesn't matter if you're young and buff or over 50 with a beer gut, budgie smugglers are the only acceptable kit it appears.  Go for it.

It's what I wear to train in. It's what everyone I see regularly at the pool wears. Insecurity isn't for somebody that wears spandex daily

personnaly I wear swimming shorts as they cause drag and makes you work harder, so when you wear your tri suit swimming feels so easy )

I'm confused.  In what way are jammers bulky?  They are the same thing as a speedo, except they have legs to 4 or 5".

I mean really, how much "heavier" is a jammer suit?

We are not talking trunks here.  These are skintight suits in a polyester/lycra blend.  Weight is negligable.

If you are Tri traning, why would you train in a brief (Speedo is a brand name) and race in a trisuit with legs?

I'm not sure what advantage you are getting, unless you plan to go old schoiol and race in a brief.

This is what I mean.  This is a jammer or a square leg (depending on length of leg).  Trunks are the loose fitting sort.  Board shorts are different.  A pictorial.

Wear whatever you're comfortable with - what does it matter as long as you're doing the training.

For the record I wear budgie smugglers (speedos), and reckon about 25-50% of  swimmers at the pool do as well.

i wear a square leg suit or either jammers. Both are absolutely fine and I swim at a family YMCA.

I'll even wear the jammers in the afternoon when it's open swim, and so far nobody's said anything...

@daisymouse and @Rod....   budgie smugglers - love it!   I have a new term for my vocabulary!

I say suck it up and wear the speedo?s - it will be a lot cheaper than moving to Australia or Europe!?

Not sure how you would really notice a difference in the water but wear whatever you want.

LOL, never heard the term "budgie smugglers" although from an ego perspective I like the "banana hammock" better!

Briefs are the only thing I swim in and race in about half my races.  I've tried jammers but they end up stretching out and putting them on gets to be an exercise in futility.  It's what I'm used to and feel comfortable in.

Same here.  I love being around 10+ sec / 100 faster during my actual events.

Pool training is 100% drag suit.  I would highly recommend that anyone looking for extra drag while swimming go with drag suits instead of trunks.

I wore the Speedo briefs in the late 80's when I first started swimming for my first workout. I was learning to swim with the intention of one day doing tri's. That was the first and last time.:-). Nowadays I stick to jammers.

I always thought the square leg shorts look like hot pants. NTTAWWT.

Any one is free to wear what they like in the water. I am only a swim /play type of guy but I wouldn't wear anything but a brief, and a very little one at that. Ranging from a 5cm sideseam down to a string bikini 1cm, just enough for the drawstring. I like swim briefs as you are totally free in the water and they look hot, especially when you come out of the water. I love that cling on sensation and so do the spectators People will look, but I assure you that it will be good.

Wow! That's an old thread! I'm impressed you found it!

Nothing to add other than to say I've noticed a direct correlation between the length of someone's swim suit and how fast they are... basically if they are wearing a speedo they are going to smoke me in the pool, even if they are a 60 year old out of shape guy with a huge beer gut! They might not have the endurance, but muscle memory is a beautiful thing!
