JorgeM - 2010-10-25 9:23 AM BTW my guess would be a sub 2hr Oly would be equivalent with a ~1:15-1:20hr Half Marathon, IMO of course...

I don't think that's true... Though I guess a the same person wouldn't be doing both those things. I'd say it's closer to 1:10 HM.

I agree with Jorge; a 1:10 HM would indicate an open 10k of ~31:45 and a likely run split of ~33:30.  A 1:20 HM would indicate an open 10k of ~36:30 and a run split of ~38:00.  The first runner (assuming decent swim and bike fitness) is likely to be well under 2:00 while the second athlete is likely to just get there.

Consider a typical sub 2 performance:

Swim 20:00
T1 - 1:00
Bike - 1:00:00
T2 - :59
Run - 38:00
Finish - 1:59:59

cwpeters - 2010-10-25 12:37 AM Ok, follow-up question, what are the "standard/official" distances for an Oly? I did one today that was 1/2 mile swim, 20 mile ride & 5 mile run.  Finished in 1:59:42. I am running a HM next weekend and am hoping to finish in under 2 hours also. Do you think that's realistic?

I don't think anyone actually said this, but the race you did is considered a sprint distance.

A sub-2 hour Oly is considered by most people to be an elite performance, but a sub-2 HM is very achievable for the average AGer.

So instead of an Oly PR, I really had my slowest sprint. That sucks!

Unlike all other distances(IM, HIM, Oly all are very specific) , "Sprint" is a title that can mean a variety of distances.

You could go much faster on a longer Sprint course and have a "slower" time.  But that would still be your fastest race.  Comparing times for two sprints is impossible, so don't waste your time!

Well, I was going off personal experience and that of athletes I know that have gone under 2hrs for Oly. None of us has gone 1:10hrs HM (or run under 32:30 for 10K), but we all have run around 1:15-1:20hr open HM or 1:18-1:24hr on a 70.3 (33-34min for 10K). Still, I said it was a guess and just my opinion

I barely consider myself a runner, but was able to pull off a 1:54 half marathon just a couple weeks ago.

The best I have done at an Oly was 2:46 in awesome weather.  My other was 2:57 in terrible weather.

I would certainly say its easier to break 2 hours in a half marathon because I have done that, but havent been able to come anywheres close to doing it in an Oly

This is my thought process exactly.  I've gone sub-2, and I couldn't do a 1:10 half marathon in my wildest dreams.  There are maybe ~10 other guys I race against locally who can also go under 2 hours on any given day, and only one of them has run a half marathon under 1:10, and he's a well known pro who goes ~1:50 for an Oly.  There are a couple other guys that probably could go sub-1:10 (ex-D1 runners), but they would have to change up their training to the point where their tri performances would suffer.  The rest of us... no chance.

x2.
Plus, even at standard distances, such as Oly, HIM, IM, you still can't compare times at one race to another, because all courses are different.  Swim distances are notoriously inaccurate.  I even take comparisons of the same events from one year to the last with a grain of salt, because the weather conditions can vary from year-to-year, the transition area might be set up differently, and the aforementioned swim distance variations.
