Ok, what is wrong with you people? Stevie Ray was incredible, but he would not be who he was had not Jimi paved the way.

I think it’s a stretch to say that Jimi “paved the way” for SRV. Jimi was great in his own right, as was SRV.

I missed a chance to see Stevie Ray the summer before he died. I remember not being too disappointed because I figured I’d have plenty of other chances.

Couldn’t Stand the Weather is my favorite album of his. Texas Flood’s a close second.

I missed the part where the guitarist had to be dead.

I'm going with Chet Atkins then.

x2 on Hendix.  I'm pretty sure that Robin Trower and BB King are still alive.

I do like Stevie Ray as a guitarist but his voice just turned me off to his music.  He needed to hire a singer for people to really appreciate his guitar playing.

If you're not a fan of his gravely, blues vocals, honestly, one of his finest songs is "Let's Dance" by Bowie. SRV is spectacular on that.

Jimi was incredible in his own right. Took blues fundamentals and expanded them beyond what anyone else ever had. This in a time where no chours, wawa pedals, reverb boxes or other effects were available. Stratocaster; that's all you get. Man he could make that work.

Obviously I don't think it's a stretch at all since I posted it.  Vaughan himself freely acknowledge the huge influence Hendrix had on his music. He learned to play by listening to Hendrix records. He used to pretend to be Jimi Hendrix. He even strung guitars like Hendrix did even though Stevie was right handed. No stretch IMO.

how BB King, Muddy Waters, nor Chuck Berry made this list is simply appalling. Of those on the list Id have to pick Vaughn

Not appalling at all, considering Mr. King and Mr. Berry are still alive.

I gotta admit, I'm a little appalled at how few people read the qualifications in the OP.

Are you saying then, that SRV deserves no credit of his own for being a great guitarist? Everyone has people from whom they draw inspiration artistically. It doesn't mean that they aren't great in their own right. I wouldn't call SRV a derivative of Jimi, would you?

Puppetmaster - 2010-10-28 2:25 AM Then again there is Steve Vai

Steve Vai does not get enough credit.

Neither does Robert Johnson, without whom many of the newer players including Vaughn and Clapton would have never found their roots.

In all, though, SRV is and will always be the owner of my "guitar ear".

Just had another thought, though I would put him 5th or 6th on the "dead list".  What about Randy Rhoades.  Our discusion thus far as been towards "bluesy" guitar players, but Randy Rhoades could really grind.  Listen to some early Black Sabbath and just revel in the guitar.  While you listen, try to imagine Rhoades playing blues and I think he would have been fabulous.

im gonna weigh in here ..

as much as I've seen many of these guitarists live ..save for Jimi Hendrix ..

SRV was fantastic I saw him 2x and i have 2 bootleg recordings that destroy. (along with the the studio releases)

Jerry Garcia was a magician - the soul of an agless player.. the music and sound that he could deliver night after night after night was unrivaled by anyone.

Frank Zappa. Listen to anything by this guy. Live at the Roxy, Live at the Fillmore, Bongo Fury, Zoot Allures, Sheik Yerbouti, Hot Rats, Shut Up and Play Your Guitar... the list is long and equalling as amazing..

Carlos Santana - Just for the song "Incident at Neshbar"

And to anyone who lists Keith Richards, I give you Angus Young.

Perhaps you are thinking of Tommy Iommi - he was the original "machine gun" sound of early Sabbath..

Did anyone see the program "It Might Get Loud" ..

featuring Jimmy Page, Jack White and the Edge.

They were jamming, talking about the guitars, their influences and jamming at Jimmy's "house".

It was flippin' awsome !!

Made me realize that Page is truly great. Jack White is perhaps the most innovative player we have right now, a treasure really. And the Edge ? well.. he knows how to play.

To OP, is this thread about dead guitarists or what? Sorry, very confusing. If you mean dead then Hendrix is in a class by himself. If you mean all time living or dead then Clapton is my favorite.
