Subject: Designing a tattoo
My buddy is doing IMAZ this year and wants me to design him a tattoo because he doesn't want the M-dot.  He wants something simple and "elegant" (whatever that means). It's going on the back of his shoulder. So far I have a very rough draft.  Give me some constructive criticism:
Tri-tatt

Looks cool. First thing that jumps out at me is the swimmers front arm. I don't know about you but my arm doesn't bend like that.

It's a neat design, but reminds me more of something you'd see on a tshirt or a race club logo.  If you don't want the M-dot, then you probably also don't want something that still has the appearance of a corporate logo.

Overall I love it but have a little problem with the swimmer.

I like it...I also like how you incorporated the tri-angle in there.

I think it will help a little if you bail the straight line on the bottom....less logoish.

I also think maybe a slightly more artsy font for the 140.6

Looks great.  Very professional.  I like the lack of the ironman icon.  I don't really see the coporate thing but the arm of the swimmer catches the eye. I'd love to see the finished product.

I really like it. Any idea how large it will be? I ask only because if it's small-ish the lines might be a little thin. Dunno though...I'm not a tattoo artist.  I love the design though.

Please don't take this personally, but I really don't care for it.  I agree with megtrow, it looks like a race logo or tri club logo, or something you'd see on a race t-shirt.  I know it's not something that I would personally want as a tattoo.

Unfortunately, I'm not at all artistic, so I don't really have any good suggestions.  I do like the 140.6 at the bottom, but I think that for one thing you could lose the line below it.

Nice start.  I would remove the line under 140.6 as it doesn't need to be there.  I know it is rough draft only, but make all of the triangle lines the same width.  I like the flow of the S B R people, so maybe find a more flowing font to match it somewhat.

I've seen race or Tri logos that are similar where sbr are horizontal vs a triangle.  I didn't like the size of the bike being bigger then the other two figure. Also, the triangle lines seem to need a common angle to interact with the figures, I was thinking of lining up the lines with heads of the figures.  Any thought of having a wave, bike hill, and paved road under each figure. Maybe have a blue wave (white crest), black/yellow stripped road for the bike and run?  Still pretty cool

O.K guys don't laugh at this, but my friend is a chemical engineer and therefore a bit of a science nerd.  He decided to go with the periodic table of elements symbol for iron.  I replaced the atomic number with my little triathlete guys and replaced the relative atomic mass with 140.6.  oh well, so much for "elegant" hahahaha.  I told him, maybe a tattoo of Darth Vader with an aero helmet and fuel belt might have been a little less nerdy than this. LOL

Thanks for the suggestions anyways!Laughing

Hm... Dunno. If he likes it, great. Me, not so much. Too much contrast in style. With the text like that (and I agree changing Ironman to Man), the stylized characters up top look out of place. My first impression was that it looked like eyes and eyebrows.

Of course, I've been accused of having no taste or sense of style, so take my opinion with a ton of salt.

I think the Fe one would make a good t-shirt.
Not a tatoo.

I agree that the tri-guys don't match well with the rest of the theme. I might replace them with the more universal type figures (the kind you see on the mens/ladies room.) or I could put the date, or I could put SBR. I also like the idea of replacing "iron" with "man". I'll play around some more. Thanks!

Thanks for the complement!

I do graphic design (with an emphasis on logos) as a hobby.  If anyone here ever needs some kind of graphic, I'd be happy to sketch something for you.

I designed this logo for my custom tri-suit and bike jersey. (In case you're wondering, I used to be -ahem- "Gravitationally Challenged".

I like the first one better. get rid of line across bottom. Fix swimmer by making arms one unified swish (not two lines bumped together) that will look simpler and more like the motion of swimming. Not 100% on the type, there seems to be a lot of space around the decimal point. hmmm. also wondering if the triangle could be done in a block of color with the black lines over it? That might make it easier to read. FE
