Subject: Strategy for Krispy Kreme Challenge
I'm doing a Kripsy Kreme Challenge on Saturday.  2 mile run, 12 doughnuts, 2 mile run.  I did this last year, and was able to finish within the 1 hour goal.  The toughest part was obviously getting the doughnuts down.  Didn't have any stomach troubles.

My question is, should I try to skip dinner and breakfast so that I have an empty stomach.  Or can my stomach contract enough within that time to make it a problem.

Any expert advice would be appreciated.

I have been on a huge binge lately and would do anything for a Krispy Kreme doughnut right now, but I would not even consider doing a race like that. 12 doughnuts, at 200 +calories each, all sugar and fat = disgusting and make me puke. I don't think there is a good strategy for going about it. Good luck to you.

I think it all depends on your pace.  If you can shove a donut in your mouth and swallow every quarter mile then you should be golden.  Now if you have to run 2mi, take a break and shove 12 donuts in one seating (like what you implied), and run 2 more miles, you should do some stomach stretching exercises as soon as possible then do a run.  Dunk the donuts in water ala Kobayashi style for easy swallowing.  Shout after each donut to get yourself pumped up.

You don't have a lot of time left so you would have to practice "nutrition" and running right after find out what works best for you.

Eat half a donut to warm up your gastrointestinal muscles before the race.

I tried one of these in my town and failed miserably.  After about 8, I hit the donut wall - it was one of the most disgusting feelings I've ever had.

I obviously can't help with what does work, but I tried eating a small breakfast and for me that did not work.  I'm not sure I'd ever do it again, but if I did I think I would try to skip breakfast and have my system as empty as possible prior to the race.

Congrats to you and anyone else that can successfully complete the Krispy Kreme challenge.

I think I would go with a 20 oz bone in ribeye with a bake potato the night before the race, really stretch that stomach out.  For morning breakfast maybe just some plain rice cakes to get the stomach juices flowing a bit.  I agree with post above on the water too.

I've only ever ate 12 donuts in seating once and it wasn't in the middle of the race, turned me off to Dunkin Donuts for a long time.

With that being said, this race sounds awesome.

But good luck to you.

Is this where "train like you race" comes into play, or would it be "nothing new on race day"

Good luck

they have a smiliar race in Iowa at ISU each spring, but the way the do it, you get like 30 sec of your time for every donut you eat up to something like 10 or so, then 1 min for every one after that.

I think winning times are around 7 min for a 5k.

I dont think 4 miles is enough to cancel out 12 doughnuts... Consider doubling the run...

I think this would be my strategy too.

I almost signed up for the NC one in 2009, but couldn't find anyone else who was willing to drive down there and do it with me.

It sounds awesome, I'm sure by doughnut 4, though, I'd be regretting my decision....

I did the 2009 KK challenge in Raleigh (36 minutes in costume) so I can give some "expert advice"  on getting the goods down!

My advice, eat a big (but not fatty) dinner the night before (and drink a ton of water all day) and some non-space taking breakfast (think banana and a breakfast bar).  The big dinner helps stretch the stomach.

My eating technique:  Smoosh two together as flat as can be.  Fold in half.  Dunk each bite in water.

I am normally an over-eater so I really had no problem getting the donuts down.  My only problem was the gigantic sugar crash on the two hour ride home!

My suggestion is for a normal dinner.  Something that won't still be hanging around at race time.  Then a light breakfast consisting of something light a bagel thin or english muffin with some peanut butter.  You don't want to go in with an empty stomach.  I hope to make it to Raleigh this year to do the original Krispy Kreme Challange.  I've done a local one but it wasn't the full dozen.

Krispy Kremes?  Ew.  If you're gonna cram 12 donuts down your gullet, why not at least make 'em good donuts?

200kcal a piece according to the website.  2400 kilo-calories in 12.  Assuming approximatly 100kcal burned per mile for most people, you would need to run nearly a full marathon to wipe out the damage :D

At least you know you wont have any blood sugar issues!  There will be plenty of juice in your blood for fuel...

I think staying away from water, other than for necessary rinsing, is key!  I know it's a strategy for the pros, but the average person fills up on water too fast.

You know, reading all of this really makes me want to try.  I am hungry...

I agree, stay away from the water. Donuts swell in water. Aim for a low first split and low donut split.

Awesome...just awesome. I think I could easily kill a dozen after running 2, but moving 5 inches afterward would be tough.

Good luck. I say go light on the water until you have to have it.

I can't think of anything worse - Krispy Kreme donuts?  A dozen of them?  UGH!!

Give me Dunkin Donuts and then I'll consider it.

But yeah, I agree - avoid water unless absolutely necessary.  Actually, wait - is there a penalty for puking?  If not, then stuff and chug and hope that you get to lighten your stomach on the way back!  I think that's probably the only way to not feel like total crap later that day.

I wouldn't think too much about having a big dinner to "stretch the stomach".  The food will have passed through the stomach within a couple of hours at most.  If you are trying to train your body to tolerate large loads, a single meal won't do it, anymore than training for a marathon by attempting a single long run the night before.  You would have to practice chugging water to build up a tolerance for the distended feeling (without jamming thousands of unwanted calories in your gullet).

I did donut derby a few years ago - it was a bike event, 36 miles, with a 3 minute deduction for every donut eaten.  Figure 8 course, with the donuts at the nexus point, so two "opportunities" to gorge.  I don't think I got more than 8-10 donuts down, before it took longer to eat the donut than the time gained with the deduction (not to mention the slower cycling post-donut).  I don't really care for Krispy Kremes, and the new formulation of Dunkin' Donuts is also pretty nasty, IMHO.  Now maybe if they used donuts from Yum Yum in Quakertown, I could do a dozen.  It's the first place I stop every year after Steelman (along with a lot of others apparently)

All I know is that the Dunkin Donuts I enjoyed 10-15 years ago were much better tasting than the ones I've had in the last 2-3 years. I think the change happened when they started pairing the shops with Baskin Robbins. Or maybe as the franchises have become owned more by immigrants that have never had an american donut and don't know when the texture is off.
