one year ago i was getting ready for my very first triathlon, the brewhouse short course. i was still struggling to run, averaging 11 minute miles, often walking. i was riding a borrowed road bike. the idea of wearing a full spandex tri suit was more than humerous. i was overweight and still not in the shape i wanted to be in, but i finished that race and was ready for more!

this weekend i will be doing the long course at the same race, and hope to place in the top 10 of my age group (and more importantly, i know its possible). i have finished 6 triathlons and have 2 more before the end of this season. i am registered for a 1/2 IM next year (something i still can't believe). i have a new bike, new shoes, new eating habits. our pocket book is a little lighter, but my body is strong and healthy, my mind clear and focused....and i look damn good in my new trisuit! i was shy about using the word this time last year, but now i think i can call myself - A TRIATHLETE!

Hi Autumn,

Congrats on your accomplishments. I thought I would add my 1 year to yours.

1 year ago (plus a day) I started my BT training log. It has been invaluable in keeping me on course. I have a collection of 5 bibs on my wall and plan on adding three more before mid september. Coming to this board has made an incredible difference in the way I approach just about everything - more planning more sticking to it regardless of hurdles etcetera.

One year ago I did the Boulder Peak Tri. I did not prepair correctly but I did finish. I can remember with dismay that everyone I saw on the run was passing me. I finished in 3:20, 1100/1350 and 1250/1350 on the run.

This year I did it agian. I finished in 2:52. I was 556/1350. The run was much better and I finished at ~800/1350.

It sure does make a difference to train a lot and train in the right way. Crazy huh?

Okay, I'll play.

One year ago I was just finishing up a major personal project, and a favorite topic of discussion that I would bring up with friends and family was: "Well, know that I'm done with that, I'm going to have a bit more free time to devote to all of these other things I've thought about doing for years. I need a hobby, what do you suggest?"

Of course, I wasn't thinking of taking up triathlon. At the time, I was thinking of tying flies, or oil painting, or woodwork, or something.

Instead, I now own Bodyglide products. Didn't see that one coming.

Congratulations, Autumn! I like that what's important around here is not so much what other's call us, and more what we call ourselves.

What an inspirational story Autumn! People can make this a way of life and be healthier and leaner too!
This time last year I was ready to pop! I was 9 months pregnant and was a week past my due date. They induced me the next day and along came Josh.
Here I am a year later training for an Olympic distance in September. Still not quite back where I was pre-pregnancy, but working on it. I was about 3 minutes off my best time at my last race.

Oh and one year ago today I was in the hospital, flat on my back only allowed out of my bed once a day. I was there for 8 weeks trying not to have JJ. Glad I didn't have him at 24 weeks but darn miserable the whole time I was on forced rest : )

You guys are awesome! (OK, I mean "guys" in the generic sense of the term....sounded better than "you people" ) This web site has to be one of the most inspirational places I have been to. autumn, you are fantastic! I hope to be near where you are in a year or two.

One year ago I was 20 pounds heavier. I did summit Katahdin in Maine last August, but with less working out than I have done in years, it was somewhat of a struggle. For the past 8 months, I have been working out 6 (sometimes 5) days a week and lost those 20 lbs I gained over about 15 years. Now my goal is a triathlon. All of you fantastic people that post your stories give me much hope and inspiration that I can do this. (Doh, there I go using "you people" LOL!)

Congrats Autumn - those are some amazing accomplishments in just one year!  One year ago I was about 20 pounds heavier.... had already lost 20 pounds changing diet and starting some moderate exercise.  I thought I looked and felt great until I started training for my first triathlon in March.....  I dropped another 20 lbs training 5-6 days per week, and feel fantastic.  Now 175, I weigh less than when I was in college!  I still can't believe it... I am doing my second sprint tri in September, and am looking at an Olympic distance next summer.  Contagious, I tell you!

Excellent story Autumn!!

I have to say that I learned a great thing from Ann Landers, as embarrassing as that is to say. I was contemplating going back to grad school and I kept thinking "gee, do I really want to spend the next three years in classrooms??" Ann Landers said to someone "In three years, you will be three years older. Do you want to JUST be three years older or do you want to be three years older and a {triathlete/MBA/lawyer/race car driver}?".

At some point, we all realized we don't want to JUST be another year older. We want to be a year older and triathletes/marathoners/swimmers, etc!!! Yey us!! (but especially Autumn ).

Way to go Autumn! Incredible isn't it? I started w/ 1 just for fun. Did two last year and training for my 3rd this season. I hope to do a 1/2 IM myself next season. I'm convinced this website and stories like yours provide lots of motivation. Keep it up!

One year ago you balked at the prospect of wearing Lycra outfits and now look at you. You have a flirty new avatar where you are posing rather candidly with one strap off the shoulder ... I like!!! Congratulations Autumn, your "have come a long way", to use a hackneyed phrase. I am glad to hear that you are planning a Half IM next season. Next thing you know, you'll be doing a full Ironwoman!!!! :-)

Wow, Autumn...awesome as always. I think we need an "Inspirational Stories" category in the forumn, and you should be the moderator.

Confession: I think I'm Autumn's biggest fan (her kids and husband notwithstanding)...

Congrats Autumn! You'll be in the top 10 this weekend, looking forward to your race report.

One year ago I was new to this site, new to clipless pedals, new to the thought of doing a triathlon. I was working towards a one mile run at about 12:30 min/mi, and it was extraordinarily hard. I was about to start a swimming class, having never swum for exercise. I was riding my mountain bike and boggled at the idea of being on a bike for more than 12 miles.

Last weekend I finished my 2nd tri and was 4.5 minutes out of the top 10 for my AG (all women 39 & under). I took my foster dog for her first run, 1.25mi, and didn't consider it exercise for me. I hit 9:18 min/mi in training and I know that holding that pace for 5K is just around the corner. I own a road bike. I can swim well over a mile. And I'm still fat! Oh well. Can't have everything.

Autumn,

Just like Lance Armstrong will never really know how many people he inspires thru his being who he is, you will never really know the true number of people you affect positively both in your "real" life and this virtual one where we are comunicating right now. But rest assured you have at least one here and now.
Thanks for the great post.

that is awesome progress. my nbrs for my first race were very similar. fop for swim, mop for bike, bbbbop for the run. its slowly evening out as i get faster on the run and bike, and pace myself better on the swim (plus, i don't float like i used to!). fabulous work!

wow. thanks everyone for your inspiration posts...and for the very flattering posts. didn't really mean for this thread to be an ego stroking fest, but i'm basking in the flattery none the less!

i think the idea of a before/after and/or inspiration forum is a fabulous one.
