Is any one doing the desert half this year, I have done it in the past and is a very challenging race due to the heat and ride.

Are you guys kidding??? Osoyoos is a WAY better race than Oliver! I love that race! Honestly, it's probably one of the best, and one of my most favorite races that I've ever done! It's truly and honest person's course - if you don't do the training, you're going to suffer. And true, it's not "ideally" suited for everyone, but then again, neither is Kona yet everyone wants to do it!

I was there, cheering people on last summer in the 38 degree heat, and I told me husband to slap me if I ever talked about registering. I could do the bike in the heat but not the run.

I've registered. I am already looking into how to prepare for the heat in my training. At this point I am starting the 20 week HIM program from beginnertriathlete, before transitioning into the 16 week intermediate program, or at least a modified version of it.

It's going to be a long training season to Osoyoos, and it's going to be a tough race!!!

I guess I am also going to try to have a lot of hill climbing under my belt before then. I am even thinking about the 2XU tri suit that is supposed to lower your temperature by 5 F. Kind of hard to believe, but maybe it's worth it.

I must say it is disheartening to read some comments about how difficult it will be, but I've registered so it's time to get going!

I did the Desert as my first ever 1/2 ironman (I just picked a race and was to new to know anything about Richter etc) and I really enjoyed it. Tough bike, but not super tough. Richter is long, but not to steep, easy to get into a good zone, plus you get to fly down the other side. The run is nice and flat and the race well run.

Doing it again this year.

Ronin, that's all good news for me! It's actually also my first HIM. Looking forward to enjoying the warm weather once it's done with.

Which program are you using for it?

I believe Ronin uses the "Train like a Monster-Robot" program. The guy is like a Tri-Pez dispenser. If you snap his head back, all that will come out is a little candy that will taste like grit, determination, sweat, dedication, hardcore training ethic, pure ability and an after taste of not being able to keep pace with him. Good luck seppie on your race, my best advice to you for that day, if you here something like a freight train plummeting out of the sky, take cover, Ronin's coming!

Ahh if only it were true. More like a slow heavy ex rugby player pretending to be a Triathlete.

Joe Friel's new book - Your Best Triathlon - is excellent and has good training plans for all distances.  Joe's not paying me to say this although I keep asking him to...    PS it's only about $16 too.

It's 20.5 weeks from now. I am starting with a 20 week HIM program from BT, and may consider transitioning to the 16 week intermediate, but I'm not sure I can handle that one.

Hey just wondering what some Osoyoos HIM veterans would say about the sun and clothing selection. I don't have a tri suit yet, so I am wondering if colour/long sleeve/ etc would be something to consider for this sunny race.

Thanks!

Last year I wore the Sugoi Piston Tri Short and Fizz Tank.  It was nice having separate pieces for if you have to go to the washroom...makes it a lot easier.  They have people in transition that will put sunscreen on you as you go by.  I recommend taking the minute to get lathered up as you spent a lot of time in the sun on the run.  There are a lot of on the run course who stick there hoses through there fences so you can run through them and they have ice at the aid stations.  It was hot last year but I didn't actually ever feel overly hot on the course because of all the hoses.

Thanks Allison. Any bit of information is handy. I guess I know why people where the two piece suits. I hadn't thought too much about it, but I find bib shorts enough of a hassle, so I wasn't looking forward to the onesy!

I did Oliver HIM earlier this season.. ok.. 2 weeks ago

Thinking I should stop procrastinating and worrying and just sign up for this race.. Coach already has me doing the build for it..

Biggest point of concern for me is Richter Pass... (despite training rides on the North Shore) .. I blame my IMC tattooed friends for my consternation with regard to that part of the course...

Consternation.. hmm.. i like that word

Still a bit of consternation about Richter & the Rollers..

But no more procrastination... registered & accommodation booked..

No turning back now...

Sounds rgeat, Puddle Duck! See you there!

I hit the lake for the first time this year (and ever). It's been a cold swim so no one else in town had dared either. Got some skills to learn before July 10th!
