Swim 600 meters

Try again...I making the group call that 600 meters is out right rejected...sorry, I know that must sting :-)

I did swim 500 meters in December.

If you go by the 10% rule, then I guess it passes the smell test....

I must that after having put some monthly mileage goals in writing I am more apt to think about my weekly mileage and how it will affect my monthly goals.  This was a good idea.

sorry for the late start. last month i said i just wanted to follow the plan but all month i was comparing myself to last year so thats what I am going to use as a base for comparison.

Last year:
February's 2010 totals:
Bike:28h 55m 39s  - 570.06 Mi
Run:14h 53m 50s  - 123.51 Mi
Swim:15h 04m 50s  - 40000 Yd
Strength:3h 53m

Modifications:
Provided I stay healthy, I'd like to take bike up to 700+ mi., run up above 124mi. , and swim down to 25k. Strength can stay the same. I am sure my power and pace numbers will improve if i keep following Shanks' plan and I had pretty strong testing last week to start the year so I am not bothered about that as much as volume improvement but I am sure Shanks is.

Swim 6000 meters

Bike 10 hours

Run 150+ miles

It was short week since the month started Tuesday, but here goes:

Swim:  Zero, but I swim on Mondays.  No worries.

Bike: 2 hours.  Not bad, but this needs to be the minimum.

Run: 34 miles.  This is kind of low, but I didn't do a long run this week.

Now that I look back it is obvious I had a crappy week!  lol.

If anyone is wondering how you dominate your AG in smaller races and compete in the big national/regional races, there is your answer.

When it's cold and nasty Phat throws down some wicked miles.

I am trying to up my run volume but its hard to do it without doing it at the expense of other things I am learning.

Here we go....

Swim: 16 hours (same as Jan.)
Bike: 28 hours (same as Jan.)
Run: 10 hours (+6, injury free and build up to 2-3 hours per week of on-road volume)

Pretty simple, lots of high quality hour-long workouts and a handful of longer bike rides.  The Run will be tough if anything flares up but I've found Aqua Jogging is a decent substitute to maintain form.

Thanks again Cap.

This was my recovery week so volume was a down in swimming and had to take advantage of the beautiful day yesterday, so that kind of wrecked the recovery week .

Swim: 2 hrs (avg 4hrs 40 minutes over the next 3 weeks. I'm on track)
Bike: 8hrs (avg 6hrs 40 minutes. Still solid)
Run: 45 minutes  (Going to scale back the goal to 7 hours, very hesitant to up the mileage to 3 hrs a week... lets go for an average of 2-2.5 hours per week).

week 2-2 here we go....

Update:

Run 80 - on track, but right foot is cranky, may have to back off

Bike 350 - way behind.  I need a good long ride to gt back on track, trainer continues to hate me right back

Swim 24000 yards - on track, may be a big month is right foot is unhappy.

Mental game is slipping some, so I need to not get off track.

Bike: 3h 36m 11s - 67 Mi
Run: 1h 57m 35s - 13.7 Mi
Swim: 2h 45m - 7900 M

Jesus, looks like I have some catching up to do. Long run (9-10 miles) this afternoon, and if weather permits, around 60 miles on the bike this weekend. All of this crappy weather lately has turned me into a lethargic boob

Haha. Well I got a PS3 recently, so there is a visible impression of my on the couch. I tried playing while on the trainer, but the controller just got all sweaty. I guess I need to go from lethargic boob to perky boob.

Exactly.  Perky is your friend.

First week stats goal v. actual:

Run 125 miles -  33 miles so far, on track
Bike 2x per week - 3 hrs 36 min or 3 bikes so far, on track
Swim 1x per week - 1 swim done, on track

It is much easier to hit the goals if I'm not ridiculous when setting them.  PF is angry, so I'm back in the boot at night.  Not attractive, but it beats not running.

Ok I have an honest question. I need to up my run volume. I know I can physically handle it. But how do you guys handle 100+ miles a month consistently? I can barely break what I am doing now, yet it still seems like a lot. Yes, yes...I know the answer is to "run more", but I can not seem to grasp the concept of hitting that sacred 100 mile mark (which I really want to do, and stay there). So should I just HTFU and stop crying, or is there something I am not getting?

I had to add a 4th day of running to break 100 miles for the month without hurting myself.  So, I do two 6 mile runs, a 4 mile run (usually as part of a brick) and a long run (10+ miles) on the weekend.  If you are upping the mileage of the long run or if you go longer on any of the other days, that gets you over 25 miles per week or 100 miles per month.

Actually, I would prefer to do three 6+ mile runs but that is too much if I'm increasing the distance of my long run and it is hard to go longer than an hour during the week.

Do you find that method to be too time consuming? A big issue for me is that 1) I have no treadmill, so nothing but outside running and 2) by the time I get home from work, the daylight I have left is not too much.

100 miles a month is time consuming. you could break it up into 3 8+ mile runs, but as Steph pointed out, adding another day is the safer way to do it, especially so that you're not adding too much volume too quickly.

I know this may be hard to do (or unrealistic) for some, but early mornings are an alternative. I don't know if you do that, or not, at this time. Don't let the weather dictate weather you run or not, just do it.

I run in the early morning because that is when it fits in my schedule and because I just won't do it if I wait until later in the day, so no, it is not too time-consuming.  By running in the morning before I shower, I eliminate the need to shower before bed.  You have to be careful of cars in the mornings because folks aren't awake yet but with a little less i-pod and a little more paying attention it works out OK.

I do find it hard to get more than 1 swim per week in with 4 runs and 2 bikes per week, though.

I have hit the 100+ run mark every month for the past two years with 3x. Personally, as Mrs. Brown Dog & D00d stated, it is much better for you and on your body to add an additional day of running to the week (e.g. 4x).

During the winter months, it is very difficult to hit that 100 per month with the light restraints, etc. The key there is either to make time, and if you can leave the office to factor in a run, and then finish working from home (remote). Or, if you can hit up the gym during lunch, you could get your runs in during that time.

I just bought a treadmill because I am tired of fighting getting home before the sun sets, and/or doing trainer work and wanting to brick it but I couldn't b/c of having to quick shower/change to run outside, and the weather just sucks recently so I am over fighting the rain, snow, etc. It is a wonderful investment to be hitting the trainer, and then jump off and tranistion over to the treadmill for a quick run.

Back to your point of hitting 100m/month, 5x3 plus a long run of 10 is much easier than 7, 8, 10 or something like that. Also, if you do your long bike on Sat and long runs on Sun, you can always turn your long ride on Sat into a brick. That will also help buffer up your run miles.

I am trying to climb the volume ladder.  So far, so good.  The key is slowing down the pace on more of the miles.  The volume will beat you up if you try to keep your pace up all the time.  I have found 3 runs works - 4 miles speed work, 6 miles tempo / LT, 10 miles mixed pace.  This will give you 80.  If you throw in a very easy 5 miler, you will get your 100.  Controling the pace is key.  The accumulation is an arse kicker - see PF, ITB, etc.

Amen on the slowing down, brother...

I hardly do any speedwork. I know speed is relative, but I run almost all my runs at a slooooow pace. It just lets me run more and I don't feel so beat up afterwards. The only time (lately) that I do speedwork is during races. I'll maybe run hard for short distances in training, but mostly I run easy. Makes running more pleasant.
