15step - 2011-02-08 1:26 PM Ok I have an honest question. I need to up my run volume. I know I can physically handle it. But how do you guys handle 100+ miles a month consistently? I can barely break what I am doing now, yet it still seems like a lot. Yes, yes...I know the answer is to "run more", but I can not seem to grasp the concept of hitting that sacred 100 mile mark (which I really want to do, and stay there). So should I just HTFU and stop crying, or is there something I am not getting?

I am trying to climb the volume ladder.  So far, so good.  The key is slowing down the pace on more of the miles.  The volume will beat you up if you try to keep your pace up all the time.  I have found 3 runs works - 4 miles speed work, 6 miles tempo / LT, 10 miles mixed pace.  This will give you 80.  If you throw in a very easy 5 miler, you will get your 100.  Controling the pace is key.  The accumulation is an arse kicker - see PF, ITB, etc.

Think of yourself as a huge engined American muscle car with the transmission from a Honda Accord.

The average triathlete almost always struggles with run volume + speed = injury.  Most of us have very strong engines relative to our run mileage.  A runner would snicker at 80-100 miles per month because that is the only training they get, and it's not enough to build the engine.  The runner slowly builds up to running 150+ miles a month by running 5-6 times a week.  This allows them to run with more frequency and lower mileage per run, and therefore a better balance between running leg strength and cardio engine.

We are like a car with  a big engine from all that cycling and running, but a weak transmission because our run volume is low.

What does this mean?  You need to learn to run to the limit of your weakest link.

or not learn the lesson and look like me at the end of a race or training run or just about anything related to running...LOL  Very good bottom line on the challenges to finding pace.   Some day I will find it...maybe it is in my transition bag stuck to that used GU packet at the bottom.

With one week to go in th emonth, I decided to go back in this thread and see how things were progressing. Mind you, I think its dumb to look at volume only as my goals, when I could have lower volume but higher intensity, and similar total training loads.

I was trying to compete with myself for last year
B 570
R 123.5
S 40K

With a recovery week last week hurting my numbers, so far I am at:
B 510
R 105
S 19.5K

I think this is where I ought to be and, if all goes well, I will likely come in at around

B 650 (ok given the quality in there)
R 140 (really pleased)
S 25-30K (satisfactory)

All in all a solid February is brewing. Hope you all are hitting your goals or are ok with your training so far this month.

Right now, I am looking at...

Bike: 201.06 Mi
Run: 59.06 Mi
Swim: 27100 M

Pretty far off my goal, but its ok. My volume is slowly building back up, and my motivation is returning.

I plan to start bike commuting to work a few times a week, so I think that in the very near future, I should have no issues at all hitting my bike goals.

Anyone here have experience in bike commuting? How have you seen your race day fitness improve as a result?

As an update...and so as not to slink away from this thread, this month is going to be an epic fail for me goal-wise.  I've now had a head cold twice and a fun chest cold too so I actually had an entire week of nothing which is not conducive to meeting any kind of goals.

Run 125 miles -  108 miles so far, on track
Bike 2x per week - 7hr 41 min or 5 bikes so far, little behind
Swim 1x per week - 3hr 48 min or 3 swims so far, on track

This week and next week will be very difficult with numerous conflicting commitments, so I think I'll make the run and swim goals but the bike may be a fail.  I simply have to get myself out there.  Two beautiful Sundays I have wasted without a ride.

I view the bike commute as an interval workout because you sprint from every stoplight and then sit at the next one until your HR completely recovers.  It is not as good a workout as it would be if I didn't stop at the lights or behind the traffic, but it is way better than nothing and my starting speed/stamina has increased, not to mention the added benefit of pedaling a 40 lb bike instead of my regular bike.

80 miles run - big maybe.

350 miles bike - not going to happen, trying to get over 300

25000 yards swimming - not a problem, on track

2 x core/lifting - not a great result on consistancy.  Maybe next month.

Here's how I am doing so far.

Swim: 20,000 meters yards - 16,400 yards - I'll meet this goal if I squeeze 2 more in.

Bike: 350 miles - 290 miles - I'll take care of this goal Saturday.

Run: 85 miles - 61 miles - Not going to meet this one. I forget how many miles t-runs add to      your total.

Overall, it has been my best February ever. I'm happy about that. I'll need it to meet my Gulf Coast goal.

Rocket Man - 2011-02-01 5:08 PM

I was going to say don't overdo it in the pool this month Doug!

Goals for me:

Masters 4x a week (1 "make up" swim at LTF if I can't make it all 4 times)

Bike-Improve FTP ~5-10 watts by next test

Run-100+ miles

I didn't make it to Masters (or in the pool in general) 4x a week, but I did make it an average of 3x a week so close enough.

FTP test next week to see if I hit goal #2 (410 miles with some FTP intervals each week so this should have happened)

I hit 105 miles running today so #3 is good to go.

Well done to all you who hit your goals or didn't die tri-ng!March is going to be even better for me and you.

Barring a possible light swim later, ended up with

B 629mi (still happy with considering the quality in there)
R 160mi (massively happy-but still expect to get smashed by Ga Brown Dog)
S 28k (solid)

Nice run volume Slayer!   I'm not used to losing volume challenges.

brown_dog_us - 2011-02-01 3:48 PM

Swim 6000 meters

Bike 10 hours

Run 150+ miles

Swim: pretty big fail.  I ditched the swimming this month and only did 1500 meters

Bike: I did 8.5 hours and I'm fine with that.  I tackled some things around the house and that pushed cycling to the back burner.

Run: 152 miles.  I met my goal, but barely.  This number needed to be up around 175, but I'm nursing an injury.  Hopefully this will be enough volume for the Ga Marathon.

I'm considering going for a run after lunch because my legs feel awesome after Sunday's long run, but I think I'll rest.  I need to be smart.

Should have stuck with your original swim goal of 600 meters...

Doug,
Good run work too! I think you are going to be fine for the mary; however, that is a tough course as you well know. In contrast to you, some folks think you can do well in a mary in a 100 or so miles per month (with intensity?). I am not one of them anymore.

If you are going to run today, just make sure you post it promptly. That way I can run again later and make sure I get you for once!

I forgot today was the last day of the month.  I did OK on the challenge.

Run 125 miles -  Ran 137.59 miles.  I think that is a record month for me.
Bike 2x per week - Biked 11h 6m or 164.36 miles.  A little light but OK overall.  I added in some bike commuting last week to make up for failing to capitalize on good weather Sundays all month.  After the marathon, it will be all about the bike.
Swim 1x per week - 5h 10m or 14,818 yds. Goal met.  I'm happy with my swims.  Would have liked some company for the workouts, but I think the speed workouts are helpful and will be even better when I add a recovery swim after the GA Marathon is over.

I had to do some creative calculating on this one.

Run goal was 80 miles - completed 81.2 miles or 101.5%
Bike goal was 300 miles - completed 140.15 miles or 46.7%
Swim goal was 4 miles - completed 5.55 miles or 137.5%

Including extra credit points, I met 95.2% of my February goal.   I hope to improve my cycling numbers in March.

Finished the 100+ mile running goal with 111 miles - I hope that's enough for a 4:30 Georgia Marathon.
Also biked 45 miles because the weather demanded it.

The Bradford Pear trees around Georgia Tech are starting to bloom, pee-yew!

You gotta have the base to lean on in the last 6.2 miles.

You should be fine.  Remember to pace smart.

Average around 9:45's for the first 15 because they are less hilly.  After that give back time on the uphills and keep turning them over on the downhills.

You will be tested as you start to climb out of Piedmont Park.  It's a tough climb.  Be patient and save some for the last few miles.  Marietta St is 2 miles of slightly uphill and you will need a little bit left in the legs to get it done.
